115. The only "hit" according to the MSM was the Xerox comment.
"If your candidacy is going to be about words then they should be your own words," she said. "...Lifting whole passages from someone else's speeches is not change you can believe in, it's change you can Xerox."

The debate audience booed.

How's that workin' for ya Hillary?

... really made it look bad for her. She just jumped right into the "political silly season" frame that Obama had just created.

Hillary would have alleged that he had xeroxed one of John Edwards's speeches.

I have been trying to stay out of this since I can and will vote for either one. However, Hillary is really making the decision easy for me.

69. She hasn't congratulated Obama in public the last three defeat days she had
She is arrogant and a sore loser.

Sure, she said she called Obama to congratulate him. But could she say it in public? Hell no. She is too much of a non-leader to do so. For me, the sign of a good winner is when they can be gracious when they lose. Hillary can't face that.

Actually, Hillary congratulated Obama on his first victories as well. That was a short and momentary lapse in dignity it seems.

125. Leaders admit their losses and congratulate their winning opponents
That's the mettle that makes a role model.

A sore loser that can't accept defeat and say a few words for the winner in a contest is nothing but a loser in life.

198. It's not about being a "sore loser" ... it's about the long, hard slog ...
... that is a US Presidential campaign. Any other election campaign is over after one primary or GE and so congratulating the victor has little effect since the congratulator has already lost, but Presidential candidates have to go through numerous primary elections and so a candidate wants to avoid creating the perception of any opponent as "winner" and themselves as "loser" to dampen any compounding effect early results might have on later primaries.

196. She doesn't want to congratulate him in public ...
... because that will place the image of "Obama as winner, Hillary as loser" in the mind of the viewers, including, most importantly, those who haven't yet voted. She's just trying to diminish the damage from so many consecutive losses, heading into the Mar 4 primaries.

I doubt that Hillary's the only politician to forgo publicly congratulating her opponent(s) in a Presidential primary campaign.

195. Perhaps. Another take is that she's was trying to end the debate on a soft note ...
... to cover for the harsher attacks in the middle, hoping to leave some of the "info" from the attacks in people's minds but counter the possible blowback by ending with a softer, collegial attitude.

For me, the contrast between the closing statement and her earlier, petty attacks made the closing seem equally scripted.

51. All of the applause
The applause wasn't all for Hillary; at some point Obama looked to his right and I think he noticed that the CNN people were calling for applause for both candidates since it was the end of the debate.

All of the debates have ended with an applause for ALL of the candidates. The stupid way that CNN did it was not to ask for applause publicly, but with hand signals apparently.

81. She voted for the IWR because Bush was going to attack Iraq anyway .
He had already announced that he had an opinion from his Attorney General that gave him legal cover for attacking Iraq -- or anywhere that "harbored" terrorists -- even without Senate approval (without any IWR). Many Democrats thought this was a terrible precedent to set, and so Biden, Lugar, and Hagel met with the White House to draft a COMPROMISE IWR that would limit Bush to Iraq, and that set some other conditions that he was SUPPOSED to meet before he attacked Iraq.

There was nothing the Democrats could have done to stop him. All the Democrats could do was to vote against an IWR, and then to impeach him -- but this would have been a toothless impeachment because there wouldn't have been enough votes for conviction. Or some of the Democrats could join with the Rethugs to pass a compromise IWR, with at least some restrictions.

I don't blame those Democrats who thought it was important not to set a precedent where a President could take the country to war, without Senate approval, without serious sanctions. I didn't blame Biden then, and I don't blame Hillary Clinton now.

203. That has to be the worst rationalization I've heard for the IWR vote.
Please don't take this as a personal attack; it's not intended as such.

Preemptively giving Bush faux legal cover for a later impeachment? I have relatively more respect for Hillary, now, because I've never heard her cite this as a reason for her vote.

p.s. "Biden, Lugar and Hagel" does not "many Democrats" make. That's one Democrat. And a craven one, at that, if the above was his justification for voting for the IWR.

206. You've completely misunderstood my post.
Bush already had legal cover -- the letter from the Attorney general -- and he was determined to use it to attack Iraq, with or without the support of the Senate. The Democrats could not have stopped him from doing this. All they could have done was impeached him after the fact -- if they could get the votes in the House. But they already knew that they couldn't get the 2/3 votes for conviction in the Senate. So the precedent would have been set that the President could take the country to war without getting authorization from Congress -- and without serious consequences.

Bush also had another alternative, if he did want an IWR. If the Democrats had voted en masse against the compromise IWR in October, when Bush's popularity was still extremely high from 9/11, all Bush would have had to do was wait until January, when the Rethugs had their new majority in Congress. They would have given him the blank check he wanted, allowing him -- according to Chuck Hagel -- to attack terrorists virtually anywhere in the world.

So nothing the Dems could have done would have stopped Bush. The most they could do was try to put some limits on him, by agreeing with him on a compromise IWR -- that at least attempted to put some limits and conditions on him. I wish they hadn't -- I was one of the people protesting on the streets at the time -- but maybe they were right. We're not in Iran -- yet -- and that may be because of the agreement Bush made when we accepted the IWR.

Hillary used the term "girl," as in "I'm your girl!" early in the campaign to try to woo impressionable voters to her side solely upon the basis of her gender. Now, you tell me why that is proper. Would it be proper for Obama to tell African-Americans, "I'm your brother."

Just because you put quotations on the word does not hide your intent to slam her. You also suggested anyone who does not support Obama is a closet racist. He was not my choice in the primary based on his platform and nothing else. Is name calling your only resource when someone disagrees with you? IMHO that is not how you gain supporters for your candidate. It's a good thing that I have already decided to vote the nominee, cause comments like yours make me want to write in Edwards.

... at the end of the debate, by the same people who decry Obama for his "speechifying." Of course, Obama detractors will claim that this is OK because Hillary balances inspiration with substance, but only by ignoring Obama's years of experience and accomplishments.

It was a good thought from Hillary. My only issue with it is that it rang as hollow after her earlier, petty attacks on Obama -- with both seeming scripted.

a knockout punch of some kind here. I think that ending line definitely gets her a few undecideds, but I don't see it changing the course of the election. If she doesn't get a game changer in the next debate, this thing is over.

EDIT: But it was the line of the night, and definitely deserved the ovation it got.

167. It was rehearsed and contrived, and it was borrowed from Edwards and Primary Colors
Who you calling a plagiarist?
21 Feb 2008 10:47 pm

During the debate, Dan Drezner suggested to me over IM that Hillary Clinton was plagiarizing Primary Colors. He backs it up on his own blog:

Hillary Clinton, February 21, 2008 debate with Barack Obama: "You know, lifting whole passages from someone else's speeches is not change you can believe in, it's change you can Xerox." Hillary Clinton, later on in the same debate: "You know, the hits I've taken in life are nothing compared to what goes on every single day in the lives of people across our country." Jack Stanton speech, in Primary Colors (New York: Random House, 1996), p. 162: "Y'know, I've taken some hits in this campaign. It hasn't been easy for me, or my family. It hasn't been fair, but it hasn't been anything compared to the hits a lot of you take every day."

Meanwhile, Chris Beam at Slate picks up on another instance:

Hillary, however, pivots in a way that evokes, of all things, her Diner Sob. Only this time, she sets herself up: “People often ask me, ‘How do you do it? How do you keep going?’ ” That’s the exact same question asked by Marianne Pernold Young at the Café Espresso in Portsmouth, New Hampshire on the eve of the primary. Clinton then goes into a colorful anecdote about a medical center filled with people injured in Iraq. She doesn’t exactly tear up, but it’s a deliberately emotional moment. (We see Chelsea looking teary afterwards.) At the very end, she borrows a line that John Edwards used toward the end of his campaign. "We're going to be fine," she said, referring to herself and Obama. (Edwards always said it about himself and Elizabeth.) "I just hope we can say the same thing about the American people."

181. Yes, it was absolutely beautiful... and highlighted the differences between
them in a lovely way.

He talked about himself, his difficult childhood, his own great challenges and need to accept responsibility for his actions. Then about his work for the community. About how he decided to do civil rights law instead of corporate law at first. About how if he is the nominee, he will bring change. All about him, his difficulties.

Hillary spoke about having been with people who are genuinely suffering. She said her difficulties are nothing compared with so many other people's.

Neither are Barack's. I don't think Barack believes that, truly. He is overfocused on himself, and on having been wounded as a child.

Analysis: Clinton chooses graciousness

By BETH FOUHY, Associated Press Writer 34 minutes ago

AUSTIN, Texas - Hillary Clinton,…

"No matter what happens in this contest — and I am honored, I am honored to be here with Barack Obama," she said at the conclusion of the 90-minute forum. "Whatever happens, we're going to be fine."

………

Clinton's generous praise of Obama stood out — an unprompted gesture that followed another poignant moment, when she acknowledged the pain of her husband's dalliance with White House intern Monica Lewinsky and his subsequent impeachment.

"I think everybody here knows I've lived through some crises and some challenging moments in my life," she said, winning applause and cheers.

222. I disagree...
...She opened that section with an allusion to the Lewinsky affair and the public humiliation she suffered. If you'll recall, her status in public opinion polls during the '90s were weak until that occurred at which time sympathy sent her poll numbers to their highest mark ever. I thought her allusion to that last night was an attempt to connect with that effect again, maybe squeeze another few points out of it.

Her next remark about Iraq War vets opened with an obvious set-up by offering in almost verbatim language the question that solicited her "Diner Sob" in New Hampshire. I wondered if she was trying to internally call up the emotions that led to that famous moment in hopes she could replicate it.

She followed that by co-opting natural sympathy for disabled war vets to elicit some personal gain for herself, never once touching on any responsibility she might feel for laying the ground work that put those people in harm's way. She didn't succinctly say, "I see people coming home from war with life altering wounds and injuries." She languidly rolled in vivid descriptions that seemed to be about more than getting to her point. Once again, I wondered, as she seemingly tried to let her voice choke up, if she was attempting to reproduce the emotional moment that led to her last big comeback.

To me, it seemed transparent but I'm admittedly biased.

Did anyone else notice that Obama stood and reached over to help pull her chair out as she stood?
