I love you Americans, but am saddended that his race for the white house is causing so much conflict. For the first time in history, two people ... a black and a woman are running and frankly, I support both as we cannot go back and wished if Biden or Edwards were in the race! Both Candidates would be better than a McCain/Hucabee, etc. I favour Senator Clinton for her exeperience but I dislike that only two families are running. Do not want another Clinton in the White House. Time for change and you all are making the world proud for not electing another Clinton. They did good, but it is time for change. Peace

34. For the first time (and I have watched all these debates)...
I would have to say Obama won ... on the substance and on debating points. And that surprised me, because I have always thought Hillary is strongest in these debate formats.

But I will also say I think she won on that last question: really beautiful.

I thought he showed a command on the substantive issues that actually exceeded hers for the first time--and for the first time he actually knocked her out on the health issue. Her attempt to compare her mandated plan to Medicare was quickly rebutted with a crucial point: hers is not a mandate on government but on individuals. This is the very crux of why progressives should be against mandates--they take us further away rather than closer to a true social insurance plan. I also thought he was stronger on the commander-in-chief and the foreign policy discussions (but foreign policy is probably the main reason I chose to vote for him.)

What great candidates, though, both of them: and I get the sense that this party will come together. Kudos to both candidates tonight.

45. The debate itself was a draw.
Obama did better than ever and decisively beat her on foreign policy, the plagarism issue, and even on health care he sounded much stronger.
She knocked it out of the park with her closing comments, about evening the score overall.
HOWEVER, what she needed tonight was not a draw. She needed a decisive victory.
She did not score one, and we will see that reflected in media commentary. She needed to make him stumble, and she did not manage that. So, by that token, by not losing, Obama is the victor of the debate.

48. Hillary also ripped off a page of Joe Klein's Primary Colors
Who you calling a plagiarist?
21 Feb 2008 10:47 pm

During the debate, Dan Drezner suggested to me over IM that Hillary Clinton was plagiarizing Primary Colors. He backs it up on his own blog:

Hillary Clinton, February 21, 2008 debate with Barack Obama: "You know, lifting whole passages from someone else's speeches is not change you can believe in, it's change you can Xerox." Hillary Clinton, later on in the same debate: "You know, the hits I've taken in life are nothing compared to what goes on every single day in the lives of people across our country." Jack Stanton speech, in Primary Colors (New York: Random House, 1996), p. 162: "Y'know, I've taken some hits in this campaign. It hasn't been easy for me, or my family. It hasn't been fair, but it hasn't been anything compared to the hits a lot of you take every day."

Meanwhile, Chris Beam at Slate picks up on another instance:

Hillary, however, pivots in a way that evokes, of all things, her Diner Sob. Only this time, she sets herself up: “People often ask me, ‘How do you do it? How do you keep going?’ ” That’s the exact same question asked by Marianne Pernold Young at the Café Espresso in Portsmouth, New Hampshire on the eve of the primary. Clinton then goes into a colorful anecdote about a medical center filled with people injured in Iraq. She doesn’t exactly tear up, but it’s a deliberately emotional moment. (We see Chelsea looking teary afterwards.) At the very end, she borrows a line that John Edwards used toward the end of his campaign. "We're going to be fine," she said, referring to herself and Obama. (Edwards always said it about himself and Elizabeth.) "I just hope we can say the same thing about the American people."

66. Obama has rehearsed speeches. She gave an extemporaneous answer.
Big difference. Words from the heart do tend to sound a lot alike. There's only so many ways you can say you've been hit and you're still standing, but it's not as bad as the hit others have taken. Anything further than that, and she would have been accused of being maudlin.

Face it, no matter what Hillary does, to some people it's damned if you do, damned if you don't. And let me add, F*ck Mark Penn for the stupid plagiarism bullcaca to begin with.
