This will be ranked in years to come with Lloyd Bentsen's famous putdown of Dan Quayle.

The Dan Quayle smackdown was classic. this was corney. Wouldn't be remarkable, even now, except for the booing

9. Please, it was corny. Snide and corny. |
|
It fell flat. No knock-out punch at all in the debate for Hillary.

What did you expect? It was hardly a large majority booing. She kicked him in the ass with that one.

12. The difference is that Lloyd Bentson's quip seemed completely spontaneous and got huge applause... |
|
...whereas Hillary's moment seemed COMPLETELY planned and rehearsed--like she was going to say it no matter WHAT his reaction was.
The crowd was NOT Hillary-unfriendly, and yet, with the exception of a few boos, it was quiet enough for us to hear Obama saying "Hillary, that's just plain wrong...."
THAT is the difference.

The great gotchas are always planned. The Republicans had been making the JFK comparison for months before that debate. Only Quayle was dumb enough to throw Bentsen a big fat slow ball with it.
Clinton's xerox line was certain pre-fabbed. It's not a bad line, if the target was less agile and the delivery more deft.

35. The line was clearly scripted for her, she was just waiting for the set up.... |
|
and when it finally came it wasn't delivered that well.
It's like a joke. Two people tell the exact same joke. When the first person tells it, no one laughs. When the second person tells it, everyone laughs. First person asks why it worked for the second person - answer: they're funny.
Hillary was the first person.

It was so obviously a pre-written line that she was just waiting to use.
That is why even after Obama backed her off with the 'bickering' politics argument, she still threw out the line.
And that is why she got booed.

signalled that it hit the great brainwashed right where it hurt. I thought it was hilarious - watching it in the small hours of the morning in Ireland. For the record Bentsen had it figured that Quayle would probably bring up JFK. A class move by Hillary. This was the one that will dominate the headlines and focus attention on Obama's , ahem, lapses into derivativeness.

When people hear Obama talk about change, maybe their mind will automatically click in with "change you can Xerox."
Something catchy about that phrase, like an earworm. :)

|
where I think he made his case, I thought it made Hillary sound a little petty, a little like she was trying too hard to get that 'zinger' in.
I'd rate Bentsen's remark as a 9-1/2 on a scale of 1-10. I'd rate Hillary's as a 2.

I watched that debate and it doesn't even compare. Bentson said his comment with truth, her's was with spite. It was a let-down and very below the belt.
