Hillary supporters: How do you think Obama performed in the debate? |
|
Edited on Thu Feb-21-08 09:55 PM by I Vote In Pittsburgh
I think your gal answered the questions rationally and backed up her statements. She carried herself well.

5. Yes, and I will take her lead, we have to come together. |
|
Obama may not all the facts, but that won't matter in Nov.

2. it's not his best format |
|
when they're side-by-side he appears less informed. Not uninformed, but compared to Hillary less informed.

7. I agree with that. He seems a bit more hesitant... |
|
Probably because his strength is giving speeches and Hillary's strength is being a policy wonk.

10. Also a difference in temperament |
|
I don't remember where I read it, but I remember seeing an analysis recently that she is more of a quick thinker, while he is more of a deep thinker. So that might be why she's a smoother debater.

He seems very deliberative in these debates ... not that there's anything wrong with that. :)

6. Started slow and got better, but it was unfair not to reverse the questioning order... |
|
after halftime. It wasn't fair to either. She got cold-cocked the questions and his answers had to be framed in reference to hers. They should have flipped the field at halftime.
They're BOTH really good, and really tired.

9. He still seemed sick, so that didn't help. He didn't have his use fire or spark. |
|
And I think that really helped Senator Clinton.
Senator Clinton's closing pitch was wonderful, and last impressions are everything.
I really think she won the debate tonight.

He wove enough specifics into his more inspirational flourishes to anchor his performance with substance. He did something well that I don't like but I understand that it is effective - he hijacked a few questions to steer into something resembling his stump speech, and I think that worked for him. He didn't make any significant flubs. Sometimes he lost his energy, and unfortunately his final answer was one of those times, but usually he spoke with conviction and passion.

He's sometimes a bit halting, sometimes long-winded, but he also carried the strength he has in his speeches in a few of his responses. He said a few things that connected with real people's concerns more than Hillary did.
I think they both did well, but Hillary should not have made the Xerox remark. That came across as petty.

18. He just doesn't strike me as genuine |
|
On a strictly personal reaction, he never strikes me as warm, genuine, empathetic...he sometimes comes across as downright condescending. There is always a note of preaching to his tone.
Hillary & Barack are both corporatists. I am for Hillary, but only by default. And, I can't say in fairness that my personal reaction to Obama does not color my opinion.
Frankly, I wish we would get a brokered convention and Gore would step in.

He stammered and stuttered his way through responses and then he just gave his usual platitudes. So, he sucked. But then W sucked in debates too, and he won, so I don't think debates really matter as much as they should. W has made it easier for Obama to succeed.

22. He had some good moments/lines - and some not so good. The "silliness" was good |
|
and so was some of the stuff on immigration. Going at the end after Hillary's insurance plan "behind closed doors" and his ending thing - about his life - not so good.

24. I only saw him answer the |
|
thing about his copying his speeches. Him calling it silly was, well silly. It's an issue when you are running as the one with the great speeches and they were so incredibly copy cat. He tried to turn it around on her and it didn't work IMO.
I was spending time with my husband talking and just didn't see much of it so I can't really critique the rest.

26. Obama Needs to Work On Some Things |
|
Edited on Thu Feb-21-08 10:24 PM by Crisco
1. Relax. It's only a popularity contest to win the highest and most powerful office drapes in the world.
2. There are only 15k or however many people in the room who are going to vote. There are 1 million people who are going to vote who watch on TV and they're all in the front row. Those are the ones he needs to play to. This is not a performance and he's not the one in control. So relax.
It was very telling, how green he was, in the first part of the debate. Obama was weaving his head all over the place, giving viewers whiplash, while Hillary worked the room much more methodically.
3. Accept that the things that made him popular with the net roots are not what's going to make him popular to the non-netters. Learn to better justify hid positions for the latter, rather than back-tracking, or say something along the lines of, "since coming to Washington, I've grown in my outlook."
4. Raising his voice in volume does not compensate for a lack of confidence. Relax.

|
Edited on Thu Feb-21-08 10:34 PM by I Vote In Pittsburgh
However, he did get better as the debate went on. He's shown improvement since the earlier debates though.
Hillary, on the other hand, was relaxed the whole way through.
