Clinton's wonderful final answer? Plagiarised?
February 21, 2008

An echo from Hillary

Several readers, and Obama's staff, heard an echo in Clinton's closing line, that the candidates on stage would be "fine."

Clinton Tonight: ?

You know, whatever happens, we're going to be fine. You know, we have strong support from our families and our friends. I just hope that we'll be able to say the same thing about the American people. And that's what this election should be about.?

Edwards the December 13 debate:

?What's not at stake are any of us. All of us are going to be just fine no matter what happens in this election. But what's at stake is whether America is going to be fine.?

Some borrowing is fairly normal. What's been striking about the two Obama moments is that they were almost verbatim. This one isn't that; but it's still pretty striking.

18. she is guilty of hypocrisy - even worse in an election
her mistake is accusing Obama of borrowing when she does it too.

she is guilty of hypocrisy, Obama is not

7. I find the ideas of the statements to be almost identical.
Sure she added in the "friends and family" bit, but the overall sentiment is the same.

A silly thing for her to do, she should've avoided any similarities like the plague.

4. Whatever it is, the clips will be played against one another...
...and the implication will be there, just like it was for Barack.

Given the reaction she got for the Xerox comment, she should have made a mental note to scrap this closing, which is certainly reminiscent of Edwards's statement (made during her presence, I might add). Now this is going to become a "Hillary accused Obama of Xeroxing his campaign, then look what she did..." thing.

30. The irony is just surreal.
It's not like the copying happened a week after the debate -- it happened just a matter of minutes after she made the attack, in the same debate!

Normally, I really wouldn't think it was a big deal. It's a good closing line. But when you make a national attack on someone's reputation by calling them a plagiarist, you'd better damn well have all your ducks in a perfect little row.

Just a sad, stupid line of attack that ended up boomeranging on her. Totally unecessary.

25. That's the problem
Clinton ridiculously called it plagiarism when it wasn't. It's also very close to what Bill Clinton said in 1992.

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/

That Line

I mentioned at the end of my debate blog that the pivot of Hillary's powerful concluding remarks came from Bill Clinton's 92 campaign. Clinton had various permutations to it back then. But TPM Reader CG found one example in this November 1992 article by Anna Quindlen ...

Clinton, 92: "The hits that I took in this election are nothing compared to the hits the people of this state and this country have been taking for a long time."

Hillary Clinton, tonight: "You know, the hits I’ve taken in life are nothing compared to what goes on every single day in the lives of people across our country."

Just to be 100% clear, there's nothing in the least wrong with this. And it's a great line. But I think it shows the silliness of the 'plagiarism' charges based on a few borrowed lines. Politicians borrow good lines and catch-phrases. Happens all the time. There's nothing wrong with it.
