THE 1992 CAMPAIGN: Media; Clinton Moves to Retouch His Image

In another ad Mr. Clinton faces the camera and says, "Some people say I've taken some hits lately, but nothing like the hits the American people have taken."

"You deserve better," Mr. Clinton continues. "I want to create jobs, invest in education and health care, make the rich pay their fair share, put our people first. That's what really matters."

Mr. Carville said the advertising was an effort to "fill in some important information," and added, "I don't think people have very much of a sense of where he comes from, what kind of struggles he's had to overcome."

1. Who uses the term 'xerox' anymore?
I'm old enough to have sniffed mimeographs.

William S. Burroughs thinks this is ancient.

12. I'm fine.
I lived through one empty suit for seven years.

I can live through another for 4 years if need be.

10. Mimeographs! Man, that takes me back!
I used to mimeograph the next day's lessons when I was a teacher's assistant back in 1972! I remember I'd get a little buzzed from the aroma.

:hippie: Wow, groooovy, man!

5. She Xeroxed Edwards too:

An echo from Hillary

Several readers, and Obama's staff, heard an echo in Clinton's closing line, that the candidates on stage would be "fine."

Clinton Tonight: ?

You know, whatever happens, we're going to be fine. You know, we have strong support from our families and our friends. I just hope that we'll be able to say the same thing about the American people. And that's what this election should be about.?

Edwards the December 13 debate:

?What's not at stake are any of us. All of us are going to be just fine no matter what happens in this election. But what's at stake is whether America is going to be fine.?

Some borrowing is fairly normal. What's been striking about the two Obama moments is that they were almost verbatim. This one isn't that; but it's still pretty striking.

13. Even funnier - she Xeroxes the book Primary Colors:
Jack Stanton speech, in Primary Colors (New York: Random House, 1996), p. 162: "Y'know, I've taken some hits in this campaign. It hasn't been easy for me, or my family. It hasn't been fair, but it hasn't been anything compared to the hits a lot of you take every day."

18. Ignorant people use the term Xerox instead of copy.
I am sure that Xerox loves it that people use its company name (noun) as a verb. Americans use so many idiotic terms and sayings that they never really think about.
