Should Obama win it all, my only regret would be... |
|
...that my paternal grandfather isn't still alive to see it.
Why? Because he was an ultraconservative and despicable bigot who mentally and verbally abused his entire family for his whole life. He once told me (when Ron Brown still ran the Democratic Party), "I don't know why you'd ever want to be a Democrat. They got a n____r running things, they won't ever be nothin'."
Of course, he also subscribed to papers proclaiming the Holocaust a hoax and said, "The best form of government is a benevolent dictatorship."
I guess if Obama is sworn in, I can watch the ceremony and pretend he's somewhere watching and wrestling. It'll bring a smile to my face.

1. My only regret will be that I can't personally see the horror on 60% of the white south |

Oh man, they might even try and break away from the Republic again. Please do it guys, I've got a Glock and a Springfield sniper rifle somewhere and they will help me quinch the thirst of the tree of liberty.

5. Well, what I do know is that there are many Republicans who aren't |
|
as racist as these folks and your deceased grandfater that you describe.
Perhaps since your Grandfather passed away, and things are not exactly as they were when he was living his life. Maybe we have progressed quite a bit since his formative years.
Maybe these younger as well as more educated people voting for Obama in droves now, grew up with various Black role models and don't see the hate. Maybe their favorite singers, and sports figures, and judges on TV, and the Black President on 24 and the Hispanic President on West Wing, and the News Anchor, and beautiful actors and actress winning Oscars.....got them all to thinking that maybe there is no real difference between the races except for skin color. Maybe they were raised to celebrate MLK's birthday and listen to his words about the content of character being more important than skin color. Maybe they have seen White men in the office of President forever...and saw them make a mess of things.
I know that there were quite a few White Republicans who were urging Colin Powell to run at one point, as well Condi Rice...until they found out both were pro-choice. I think that it was that position more than the color of these American's face that turned them off.
Sometimes I wonder if the true racists of the nation don't simply reside on DU.....those who should know that these same racists are ignorant enough to never vote for a woman. But then, as a Black Person, maybe it's just me that smells them all around here.

14. He died only two years ago... |
|
...and I think you're right about some Repubs being less prone to racism but I still see it EVERYWHERE just more subtle and coded than it used to be. Now. it seems to be tied into classism as much as anything else.
But it's still here in no short supply.

6. I feel similarly about my late paternal grandmother |
|
Edited on Fri Feb-22-08 06:55 AM by rox63
She'd be horrified, and would probably be making arrangements to leave the country. At least we don't have to listen to the racist ravings of our late bigoted relatives.

in a very deep way, you do have to listen to what your ancestors felt and thought, because you carry their knowledge and experiences with you.
BUT, you also have your own mind and your own heart, so you can think differently than they did, and you can enjoy life more than they did, by throwing away the blinders.
Celebrate diversity!

8. You never met my grandmother |
|
She seemed to devote her life to making people miserable. I know she was probably mentally ill, but it was very difficult to live with her.

9. My grandmother is 88 years old. Years ago she had |
|
to pick cotton (for money)and work cleaning other people's houses. She has Alzheimer's now but during the brief moments when her mind is not fuzzy she says that there has never been a black president since she has been in this world and that there will never be one. She said if there is one they will probably kill him. I hope she is able to see Barack become president. I hope her mind is not so clouded that she won't be able to understand the significance of it.

My wife has an uncle that is a hateful racist of the worst kind. I swear that creep must have a white hood in the closet somewhere.
When she told him she was supporting Obama for president he exploded in rage at her. I cant really repeat the vile things he said about Obama..."giving the country to the "n word" and the towelheads" well, you get the drift I'm sure.
Now he has totally cut her off the jackass. Hes just your typical hate-filled Reich wing rethug taking orders from Rush and his ilk.
Some people are a waste of breath, ya know? I will be smiling with you when Obama is sworn in.:)
