If we get our Democratic President, will DU change? |
|
DU's never had a Dem in the White House, will we be able to discuss the (new) Presidency openly and honestly, without fear of being banned?
I'd hate to see this site morph into a Freeper-like community, with hopes we'll get back to discuss issues again! And yes, I'd like to prod the new President along :D

1. We will still have congress, the supreme court, lobbyists, and the media to keep honest... |
|
I think it would switch from revolution to solution mode, hopefully! I think it can be a productive and interesting place, with all of these smart people now looking ahead, instead of gnashing teeth about the current idiot in chief!

Wonder if we'll still like Stewart, Colbert and Letterman :) They certainly will poke at our guy/gal.

4. No, because then we will be able to discuss and argue about |
|
issues and you know we fight like cats and dogs about those things. I guess the administration will have to come up with some new rules though to keep the trolls away and not ban legitimate DUers on different sides of an issue or incumbant for that matter.

5. I think DU will remain similar to what it is. There will be some |
|
who HATE what the new Prez is doing. I can visualize it now. Things like THAT'S NOT WHAT HE PROMISED TO DO! or DAMN IT! HE CAVED AGAIN! There's a lot of truth to the statement "You CAN'T please all the people all the time!"

I know we (the political junkies) have all the stump speeches memorized, would be easy for some of us to point out, uhm, inconsistencies between the promises and the final product :D

we will be allowed to keep our Dem reps' feet to the fire! We need to be able to remind them -- often and strongly -- why they were elected. Without us keeping them in line, they will reveret to bad, DC politician habits -- and yeah, I mean you, Nancy and Harry.

8. Oh yes, it will change--and also stay the same |
|
It will change in that we will be concentrating on making sure Congress goes along with Democratic President's proposals. We'll be gleefully reporting on successes from Washington.
It will stay the same in that we'll still be bashing rwingers and the MSM, especially when they distort the truth (don't see that changing any time soon). We'll still fight amongst ourselves over specific topics, be it gun control or Israel or religion.

9. I don't think we can ever count out the Democrats' capacity to blow elections |
|
A Democratic Congress and White House will be welcome developments, but obviously would change the dynamics for DU. I don't think we (meaning Skinner & EarlG) should change the name to "DO" on Jan 20th, however.
After the 13th Amendment, the original underground didn't just go away. It just changed how it operated.

10. I'm guessing the following: |
|
Edited on Fri Feb-22-08 02:17 PM by Occam Bandage
About 1/3 of DUers will support everything the administration does. Another third will be generally support-ish, but at the same time react to every compromise with outrage. The final third of DUers will generally act as if Bush were still in office.

17. A lot of pissing and moaning, no doubt |
|
Some will complain that the new Prez isn't doing enough, or doing it fast enough, to suit them. Charges of "DINO" will fly.
So pretty much the same old same old.

19. That's a really good question- |
|
I'm still kind of "new" at DU, compared to a lot of posters, as I just got here in Nov 07. When I first came I was thrilled to find like minded people to interact with. Then, as I dug a bit deeper, it surprised me to see the level of venom being tossed about, and it took me a while to get used to it.
I do believe it's important to elect a Democrat. But it's not the most thing. I believe we'll have a Dem, but we need a Congress to go along with that Democratic President. And more important, we need to be able to hold their feet to the fire on the issues that truly matter to the American people. Health Care, Iraq, the economy, just to name a few.
I'm hoping to see fewer attacks on the politicians, and more attacks on the issues.

24. If Democrats are in power, SOMEONE has to hold their feet to the fire -- to make sure they don't ... |
|
betray the great majority of Democrats the way Clinton did upon coming to office. Yes, he balanced the budget and helped maintain prosperity but progressives were TOTALLY betrayed in a myriad of ways by President Clinton.
