Sadly, I now have to turn to MSM to escape the lies and hate spewed here at DU..
I can remember the day when I looked forward to logging on here each day when I got home from work...where I could always depend on getting the REAL news that MSM was not covering. What an intelligent and witty bunch I always found. Sad that now I find myself trusting MSM more than DU!I now mostly avoid coming here because of the hate and lies being spewed by so-called Democrats themselves....the Hillary people/Obama haters. It is sad what has become of this place...and especially the ones who have just 'joined us' recently ONLY to spew their hate and lies. I wish they would just GO AWAY!

7. Hillary is not trustworthy ... crooked ... a liar ... inauthentic ... " ad neauseam
There is plenty.

Take the plank out of your eye. The GOP has no such blindness. They intend to destroy Obama the same way they destroyed Hillary.

Even if it requires a time-bomb effect. The same way they destroyed Hillary.

2. Why is it that you single out people who joined recently...
...but give a pass to people who have been here longer?

Why is it okay for long-termers to act like jerks, but not okay for new members?

Perhaps if the long-termers would set a better example, then the new people wouldn't assume that it's okay to post crap.

11. That doesn't really address my point.
What I am trying to ask is this:

Are new members the only people who should be expected to behave themselves? Or do long termers also have a responsibility to do so?

16. I believe that I behave myself when I come here...
I was merely trying to express my longing for the old days when I could come here and get actual news that I could count on. I have tried to use my ignore list as much as possible to keep from getting in to the fray so that I could have an enjoyable and productive time here. Maybe I don't see as much of the Obama people going negative because I have so many of the new Hillary supporters on ignore...many of whom have now been tombstoned I might add.

19. If you meant to express your longing for the "old days" then perhaps you should have said that.
Because that is not what you said.

And don't get me started on the whole Obama supporters vs. Hillary supporters angle. No one is blameless here.

23. I guess we all have our own perceptions as to when/why/how the venom started...
For me it seemed it was a year ago when Hillary was the presumptive/inevitable nominee and any time somone posted something about Obama they were immediately attacked as a BAD Democrat for not supporting Hillary. It was an uphill battle for voters to make their voices heard.

10. Skinner, I don't think the new people in question are
necessarily using the behavior of long-timers as guidelines to post their crap.

You're absolutely right that long time members should not be excused, but the provocative behavior seems more prevalent among the new members.

18. With all due respect, I think that's completely wrong.
Edited on Sat Feb-23-08 10:43 AM by Skinner
The difference is that you know who the long-termers are, and you have a more complete understanding of their entire personality. You have context. When a long-termer acts like a jerk, the behavior is automatically discounted as being either a temporary slip-up, or even a direct and completely rational response to all the provocative behavior from new members.

But there is no context for new members. They are not given the benefit of the doubt. Their behavior is not seen as a temporary slip-up. And you can be sure their behavior is NEVER seen as a direct and completely rational response to the provocative behavior by long-termers.

And one more thing: I think it makes us all feel better about ourselves to blame new members. We would prefer not to consider the possibility that we might actually have some responsibility for the problem. It's just too much. But look around. The evidence is everywhere. The only reason people don't see it is that they refuse to.

20. Skinner, I'm not saying it's an epidemic at DU as a whole.
Edited on Sat Feb-23-08 10:48 AM by cboy4
However, there's a notorious group of supporters in GDP who joined within the past 60 days and have accumulated an enormous number of posts.

On pace to catch me by the end of the year, and I've been here since 2002.

That's not bad, in and of itself.

But there's a suspicious pattern that's hard to overlook, which is to provoke.

That "evidence is everywhere"...ask around.

On the bright side, I think this is a temporary problem.

Surely skinner, you have to recognize some of this.

on edit, remove the smilie i accidentally posted.

22. I'm not saying that new members don't act like jerks. Obviously some do.
My point is that new members sure as heck aren't the only ones who act like jerks. They aren't even a majority of the jerks.

Despite all this talk of out-of-control newbies, more often than not the disruptive posts are by beloved long-termers. I think we can all agree that long-termers are the ones who should really know better. And maybe they do. But many of them sure don't act like it. And they have no reason to improve their behavior because they don't think of themselves as part of the problem. And neither do many other long-termers.

12. everyone hates newbies
No matter what internet forum it is, everyone turns against the new members. We are the easiest to pick on :(

I post something based on a conversation that I had with a friend in Texas last night and Im called a troll. I have seen other new postes attacked repeatedly for doing little more than offering thier opinions. After lurking this forum for 4 months before joining I am starting to regret my decision to join.

I had always thought we democrats were more accepting of varying opinions and more supportive of free speech. Was I wrong my whole life?

25. I've noticed that too.
The apparently low number of my posts gets cited as if it were an insult. The weird thing is, I've been posting articles here since 2001. Heck, I've been posting articles online for over twenty years.

13. Eliz.. I just posted in another thread that when I opened the board today
I saw nothing but a page full of smears on Obama. There really is nothing here and will be nothing here until after March 4th but endless attacks on the likely democratic nominee. My advice is do what you are doing.. stay away, for it does no one any good to come here and read lies and slander which are more reminiscent of Free Republic. Its an exercise in futility.. I say let them have the boards for now. Hopefully they'll give up and go home after Mar 4th. Keep your chin up.. its not like this everywhere, and certainly not in the "real world".. :hi:

15. Sorry have to say I think both sides have SUCKED
and I would give the sucky edge to the Obama supporters - BUT this is the first time I've been here in over a week because I just couldn't take it any more - maybe the past week the Hillary camp has been misbehaving more...

But for me the complete sadness of this whole sorry mess started with the SEXIST SHIT I found on this progressive board starting the night of the NH debate....

What I've learned from this primary season is we're really no better than the repunks in many many cases....apparently we can throw hate and shit with the best of them....

26. If the MSM isnt covering it - it isnt news...
Lets say there is another sex scandal of some kind.. If the MSM doesn't pick it up.... it never happened.. PERIOD.

Who cares if 10,000 people read about it on some blog... word of mouth? give me a break..

This board gets seriously pissed off if the MSM doesn't carry some hearing or story...

So yes.. even this board and the people on it need he MSM..

I don't care if you love them or hate them.. they are needed to carry the message of either side.

28. I totally agree with your post, but also agree that it is long-timers too.
Which is infinitely more disappointing. I hope this primary will be determined soon. The dem party needs to unify quickly. Right now, everyone is at each others' throats blindly posting smears in order to win.
