Here's why Hillary flipped out today...
Edited on Sat Feb-23-08 05:15 PM by Bleachers7
I saw the video of Hillary getting emotional about the two mailers. The mailers are nothing new. They've been around for a while, and in fact, have been in Ohio for at least a couple weeks. If she had a problem she could have brought it up in the last debate. Here's the real story about why Hillary flipped.

1. The last debate. Hillary intentionally or unintentionally appeared to be conceding to Obama. The "I'm honored to be here with Obama" bit didn't come out as intended. It has been been termed as "valedictory." It looked like she knew it was over, and word went out that way.

2. Obama's got money and he's using it. Obama is able to go deep with voters. He can hit them with multiple pieces and multiple ads. He's able to expand the electorate.

3. Hillary is broke. Hillary cannot reach voters the way Obama can. Her options are to use free media such as press conferences and debates. She's trying to tell voters to not believe the mailers because she can't match them with her own mailers. BTW, direct mail is very effective. Also, Obama is advertising in Vermont and RI. Hillary isn't in any meaningful way.

4. Hillary's campaign is negative and everyone knows it. Hillary's xerox remark was profoundly negative and didn't play well. 54% of Wisconsin voters said that Hillary's attacks were unfair. She's trying to turn that around by saying that Obama is the one that is truly negative.

5. Hillary is desperate. With the union endorsements and superdelegate action, it's getting bad for Hillary in a hurry. Some are suggesting she might be out by March 4. This is all bad news for Hillary. She's desperate to change the narrative and desperate to look like she's not quitting.

That's what's going on today...

Obama has resources to counter Hillary's hysterics. The #1 thing he can do is drag out the unions to back him up on health care and NAFTA. This would play well for him.

**Note: If you have a problem with "hysterical", substitute one of these words:

agitated, berserk, beside oneself, blazing, carried away*, convulsive, crazed, crazy, delirious, distracted, distraught, emotional, excited, fiery, frantic, frenzied, fuming, furious, impassioned, impetuous, incensed, irrepressible, mad, maddened, nervous, neurotic, overwrought, panic-stricken, passionate, possessed, rabid, raging, rampant, raving, seething, spasmodic, tempestuous, turbulent, uncontrollable, uncontrolled, unnerved, unrestrained, uproarious, vehement, violent, wild, worked up*

Hysteria is a women's ailment that can be cured by a home remedy such as a
(!) poultice (!)

On Edit: Mood swings are a symptom of "female hysteria" according to the Almanac.

Home Remedy: Chew up bark, herbs, squirrel, and mix in a kettle...

6. Excellent analysis--especially the part where she's not able to counter
Obama's ads and mailers with enough of her own, so she makes an outrageous and emotional attack in the hopes it will get a lot of free air time for her--she's pulling a version of a "Huckabee"--remember when he held a press conference to NOT air a negative ad, which he then aired in the hopes that the press would run it?

She's one person at the beginning of the debate, another person in the middle of the debate, and yet another at the end. And today, she's someone else. It makes her look psycho.

21. You just made a cogent case for why Clinton's charges made good political sense
given her current circumstances, and God knows Hillary Clinton is not the first leading political figure whose campaign ran very low on cash. Thinking back to others who have faced these circumstances two names spring quickly to mind: John Kerry and John McCain.

Then you go and describe it all as "Hillary's hysterics."

40. There's were at different times
Kerry faced low cash twice. The first time before Iowa when the media was counting him out - he loaned himself money and the campaign took off. The other time was due to McAuliffe's incompetence in scheduling the convention 5 weeks before the Republican one. This was the first year of McCain/Feingold and led to Kerry having to stretch his money over 13 weeks while Bush could still use unlimited primary money for the first 5 of them.

McCain may still suffer for his money problems as there are questions of whether he could opt out of campaign financing - unlike HRC that lack of money did not deter him from beating the well funded Romney.

(I would prefer not hearing hysterical - because she wasn't and because it is a word that does seem more used for women - though women are in reality no more likely to act in that manner.)

22. Bleachers -- u post lots of good stuff, but remember WE'LL NEED HILLARY'S SUPPORTERS TO STOP McCAIN
For some reason that I don't completely fathom, McCain is running VERY competitively with both HRC and Barack Obama in the polls. Why he would poll so well in a country that OVERWHELMINGLY has become disgusted with the war in Iraq that McCain is gung-ho about pursuing baffles me. Now let's see -- it isn't his charisma; he isn't a particularly squeaky clean avatar of reform, even though the media has promoted that idea. He isn't exactly inspiring or anything else I can think of. Apparently the media have been treating him very very nicely, preening his image (the image is the bait, trillions for the Iraq War is the hook).

If Obama gets the Democratic nomination, which now seems likely, though not inevitable, we will need to win over the whole of the support that Hillary got in the primaries. Thinly disguised gloating "analysis" in my arrogant opinion is exactly the thing that can turn Democrats if not into Repuke voters than at least into non-voters or completely passive and unenthusiastic rather than donating voters. It seems to me that BOTH HRC and Obama represent a modicum of hope for better things in this country, in my view Obama a greater likelihood of greater good. I would be appalled to see McCain get in in Nov and then spend the trillions we need to eco-industrialize, provide affordable quality healthcare for all, improve the school system ... on a war that the US should never have started in the first place and that I have ABSOLUTELY opposed since before it was launched. PLEEEEZ folks, including fellow Obama supporters, DON'T DO OR SAY STUFF THAT CAN ONLY BE LIKELY TO HELP McCAIN IF OBAMA GETS THE NOMINATION. We MUST win this one, after going completely in the wrong direction for the past 7 years.
