Saying Hillary became unhinged is disingenuous
I just watched the video. She is obviously taking a harsher tone, no doubt because of her precarious position. You might say it's desperation, in that it's a tone she has chosen to avoid up until now. It looks like she might not want to talk like this but now feels she has to.

But all the stuff about her having gone mad is just silly and disingenuous. Just as silly as the media whore stuff about Gore being crazy.

The media whores knew perfectly well that Gore was not crazy, THEY JUST DIDN'T LIKE HIM. And the people here know that Hillary is not crazy, YOU JUST DON'T LIKE HER. Silly for the whores, silly for you.

11. Oh I think not!
The Dean Scream was a demonstrably audio enhanced 2 second clip. The Hillary outburst was a lengthy, clearly elucidated temper fit over truths about her views being published in a flier.

BIG difference.

5. Have to disagree
"...taking a harsher tone,", is that all? What about the line about stopping all the big rallies and speeches? That was a total non sequitur, the kind of stuff that comes out of one's mouth when they've let their anger run away with them. She was over the top. Period. I'd be very nervous having her in the WH again. :dem:

24. Stopping big rallies and speeches?
What was she saying? I can't believe I missed it.

She just doesn't get it. It's her 'softer' side that helps her, not her whiny shrill side. Doesn't she remember her 'tears' won her NH and all the compliments she got on Thursday night at the debate was for her very nice ending comments.

She's calling for "real debates" because SHE does them better. The real tragedy is that she doesn't think that anyone sees her ulterior motive.

Edited on Sat Feb-23-08 06:04 PM by madaboutharry
her anger was evident and a candidate for president needs to keep that under control. One of the things that everyone who opposes McCain points out is that the man has a fuse an inch long. Sen. Clinton did not do herself any good today. Candidates for president need to respond in calm and measured tones, not seething between their teeth. I watched it and it made me uncomfortable. That is not what she was aiming for.

She's angry, it's OK for her to express that. However, she might be mistaking Obama's soft-spokenness for a lack of resolve. If she gets on his case in the same tone at the next debate he may surprise her.

But she'll accuse him of being untruthful, he'll demur a couple of times, and then he'll do what he did the other night about his list of accomplishments - wait for her to finish, then slam her with a list of lies her campaign has put out about him.

Just my hunch.

26. Bingo
This is free airtime for her, which she desperately needs. She can only be happy that CNN is playing this over and over again. ANY candidate wants a speech played over and over again. Therefore this was deliberate and calculated. Her campaign thinks this is what its going to take to recapture some shred of momentum.

39. I agree- her 'sanity' isn't in quesion- (it shouldn't be) but her temper
over these mailings which have been out for a few weeks, is not something that illustrates the kind of self-control and maturity I'd really like to see in the WH.

She can't claim innocence- her mailers here in NH were not something she can be proud of- or defend.

But I am sure that she is not in any way "insane" or "unhinged".

peace~

23. The thing is...
Edited on Sat Feb-23-08 06:12 PM by TwoSparkles
...that her actions seem contrived and in response to pressure--because her campaign is on life support.

So, when she appears outraged about a campaign flier---people factor in that she's trying out another ploy
to see if it works against Obama. Everyone assumes that she's just test-driving new material, like a comic
trying out a new joke.

So, really--there is a certain level of skepticism, that companions this newfound outrage.

When you operate a political campaign, from a position of weakness--most everything you do is suspect
and viewed as a device.

Hillary knows this. So all of this is a bit...bizarre.

31. But truly a question of her judgement, in my opinion,
that she doesn't recognize she is accusing Obama of doing the same
stuff her own campaign has been doing.

I think it's reflective of a different mindset about elections & politics.
I just heard her speaking in New Orleans, and she was talking about
how there would be party unity once the nominee is decided. It
sounded heartfelt; but she was referring to what's going on now as
if it's some kind of inevitable game that has to be played.

At least that was my interpretation of what she was saying, from a brief
listening on Cspan.

And if that's so, I truly feel badly for her, as she's not recognizing
what is really going on -- as well-meaning as she may be. She is shooting
herself in the foot by playing the same old games of which everyone
is sick and tired.

33. She's not "unhinged," etc. It's calculated "spontaneous outrage" for media op. Mailers have been out
for weeks and the subject matter is nothing new.

The "Harry and Louise" style mailer was used by the Obama campaign weeks ago and the Clinton campaign took it on at the time. http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/harry_louise_again.html

Obama's made the NAFTA claims before as well ( http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/peas_in_a_pod.html ) and the NAFTA mailer was out and publicly known well before the recent debate http://www.boston.com/news/politics/politicalintelligence/ .

This stuff simply isn't new material that the Clinton campaign hasn't known about or responded to before today.

So Clinton didn't just suddenly learn about these campaign maillers and was "shocked, shocked" that they and the assertions were in circulation. If she wanted to discuss them in a face to face debate with Obama, as is her challenge to him now, she had that opportunity Thursday in the debate.

Politics is public theater, folks, whether on the floor of Congress or on the campaign trail.
