Cleaver stands by Clinton, says there's something 'almost unearthly' about Obama phenomenon
Ever tasted a political pickle?

Congressman Emanuel Cleaver is munching one right now. Just heard him say it’s a little sour.

Cleaver endorsed Hillary Clinton for president last summer. Then he sat back and watched as Barack Obama made his steady rise in the polls and carried Cleaver’s 5th District, albeit narrowly, on Super Tuesday.

Now Obama’s 10-state winning streak has him on the brink of the Democratic presidential nomination. Suddenly, groups like ColorOfChange.org are springing up, demanding that superdelegate Cleaver switch his stand and get on board with the rock star.

<skip>

Still, the amount of feedback about his personal choice in the presidential race is reaching hurricane strength. So many phone calls and e-mail that Cleaver now compares the response to what he’s heard, in total, about the Iraqi war.

4. What's silly about it?
A black congressman from a district that chose Obama on Super Tuesday is endorsing Hillary due to his long history with the Clintons. I thought it was actually a rather interesting dilemna.

5. So glad Clever is cautioning that
Obama won't work miracles when he's prez. As for the "unearthly" comment..damn straight..it's a cosmic change..a sea change. A change the earthling clintons did not expect.

6. Cleaver told us back in September that he was supporting Hillary
at one of his Saturday breakfasts. At that time it looked like she was going to win the nomination. I wish I had thought that day to ask him about Obama.

11. Thank you Mr. Cleaver!!!!!!!!!
To expect him to jump ship because he "should" be toeing the line and support the black candidate is just as offensive as if Hillary demanded that all women superdelegates supported her.

I find it disturbing when 80% to 90% of one group of people support a particular candidate. How many are really voting for him because they think that his policies are better than Hillary's? It would be just as disturbing if the same percentage of women voted for Hillary or the same amount of white people voted for McCain.

The election should be about the issues and who has better policies to lift the country out of the morass that it is at the moment, not about race or gender.

12. This isn't about race or gender
It's about how they should cast their votes. Should they vote for who they choose or should their vote reflect the votes cast by their constituents. It's the same for Obama. Kerry and Kennedy supported Obama but their constituents voted for HRC.

17. Obama will make sure Cleaver is out of office when he's prez
I'm sure Cleaver knows his days are limited. There'll definitely be a challenger to him, and he even knows it. He actually invites a challenger to come at him. So I can imagine President Obama will make sure Cleaver goes down in a blaze of glory. Cleaver will need Hillary to find him a job in 2010.
