Conservatives attack Obama on patriotism

By NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 35 minutes ago

"WASHINGTON - Sen. Barack Obama's refusal to wear an American flag lapel pin along with a photo of him not putting his hand over his heart during the National Anthem led conservatives on Internet and in the media to question his patriotism."

And so it begins. Obama didn't do it. I've gotten that stupid email the right wing has been circulating and had to point out to the person who sent it that it was incorrect (Thanks to snopes for having the facts and pics so that I could) and I know I've pointed out to local conservatives that this is false and it really irritates me. Problem is, if they didn't have/manufacture this they would have made up something else and no doubt will if he turns out to our nominee. And before the bias crap starts up, No, I didn't vote for either Obama or Hillary.

I'm about ready to throw the primary and probably the next 9 months of election (seems like an eternity) into the deepest darkest sea that I can find...

1. "Patriotism"...
is what has got the this country in the mess it is in today. I'm pretty sure alot of folks have had their fill of faux, strictly for show loyalty that is now known as "patriotism".

Wish these fuckers cared as much about the Constitution as they do the god damn flag and that horrid song that is, unfortunately, our national anthem.

2. Welcome to the real world
Let me give you a reality check - the Clintons were accused of murdering their political opponents, and Vince Foster, by the right wing.

The Republicans are going to go after Obama like a rabid dog. I hope they can keep a lid on things. Obama should start wearing a flag lapel pin now. I mean, so what! He's going to have to play a little to stupid people to win the election. That's unavoidable.

4. Care Not What Conservatives Say. ... Demand Truth From ...
.
your candidates. Listen carefully to the people you support. Require your candidate to speak the truth. Support you candidate because you are for your candidate's positions.

The lying liars of the right will say what they will say _no_ matter what the truth is. Do what is right and the people will forget the lying liars of the right.

5. Yes, that's a common mantra for the conservatives against liberals.
Even more so for Obama.

It IS true that Obama - the pic that shows him not covering his heart with his hand - was not covering his heart while they were singing the national anthem (I think that's what Snopes says). It is NOT true that they were reciting the plege of allegiance. But regardless, the conservatives would feign disgust at either situation, so I don't know that it matters that much that it was the anthem and not the pledge.

This sort of thing is intended to get their base "fired up and ready to go." If it weren't these things, it'd be something else. They ALWAYS find some little scrap of something to "prove" the opposition is unpatriotic.

7. That isn't the point. In this upcoming election we all need to care
about what the conservatives think because they will do anything and say anything to destroy the Democratic nominee. Whether you support Obama or Hillary at this point we need to take any attacks from the right seriously and fight back. In this sharply divided political landscape it won't be enough to only have the support of Democrats to win this upcoming election. We have got to show that a Democratic President will be the best choice for the country. The right wing hate machine is gearing up for some really ugly attacks and we have to be ready for it.

8. Agree with Arkansas Granny
Whether true or not, the story is out there that Obama is somehow un-patriotic. Add that to the unfortunate choice of words from his wife last week, and you now have an even bigger issue. The repugs will run like wild with this, building upon it. Obama needs to difuse this now before it gets more steam. I clearly believe his wife's words were taken out of context, but I have to admit the first time I heard that Obama wouldn't put his hand over his heart for the pledge I was a bit miffed at him until I found the real story. Repugs are not going to take the time to find out the real story...they will go with the first thing they heard.

9. Welcome, and I agree...you can't give your opposition anything to
go on, even if they have to distort it, whcih they will. The MSM loves controversy, and they won't report the distortion, just the attack.

13. Actually i am quite sure corporate owned media will be part of the attack
They will still be part of the outnumbered with their inevitable switch from HRC to Mc. and logically they will be outflanked there too. The question: how much more support can be peeled off of them by November?

The best part of any good defense is having a good offense :-)

12. "Patriotism" vs. "Ultra-Nationalism"
Edited on Sun Feb-24-08 11:18 AM by Xap
Many Americans probably wouldn't distinguish between them. Right-wing ultra-nationalists would include radical politicians like Zhirinovsky of Russia, Le Pen of France, and Hitler (Deutschland Uber Alles!) This lapel pin and hand over heart propaganda is right out of the ultra-nationalist tradition. I can easily visualize the Nazis doing the exact same thing to somebody they had decided was their adversary (in the early days of Nazism, of course).
