Video of Clinton Mocking Obama: "The sky will open, the light will come down"
Edited on Sun Feb-24-08 04:24 PM by knowledgeispwr
Via Huffington Post (video can be seen here)

Hillary Clinton's campaign is on its last legs after suffering a string of defeats to her rival Barack Obama. Clinton made the decision to go negative in an effort to halt Obama's rising momentum. Today, Clinton was at a campaign rally in Providence, Rhode Island, and she mocked Obama and his message of hope and change in a very theatrical, over-the-top manner.

Watch the video from CNN below, and tell HuffPost whether you think Clinton's line of attack against Obama will help or hurt her campaign:

I thought this deserved it's own OP.

ETA: Personal comment: Obama has said countless times in his speeches that the change he wants to help bring about will be very difficult to bring about and requires the dedication of a wide group of Americans, so this little mockery is disingenuous.

Edited on Sun Feb-24-08 04:46 PM by Drunken Irishman
And then she goes in front of the media with this faux-outrage about how Obama is attacking another Democrat.

Clinton's campaign reminds me of the washed up actor who tries for one last comeback but utterly fails. It's the Titanic and the final part of the ship is about to sink into the ocean.

It can't happen soon enough, because it has become quite painful watching her implode like this.

I was hoping for a Gore run. I had no "preformed perceptions" about any
of the candidates. Obama is simply the best candidate and he will make a
great president, while Hillary is flawed in too many ways. Plus, she can't
possibly win the general election, especially after her recent behavior.

Obama's first coming

Washington correspondent Geoff Elliott | February 09, 2008

IT was early 1994 when Nelson Mandela gave a speech in a slum outside Cape Town and spoke in grand terms of a new beginning and how when he was elected president every household would have a washing machine.

People took him literally. A few months later he became South Africa's first black president. That's when clerks in department stores in Cape Town had to turn people away demanding their free washer and dryer.
.......
How does a cult figure, in the eyes of some something akin to a messiah, make the transition to a political frontrunner - president even - where disappointment will soon crush what seemed to be a journey to a promised land?
Looking into the faces of a more than 16,000-strong crowd in a basketball stadium in Hartford, Connecticut this week, the Mandela magic I'd seen before was there too. Black and white, and the youth; they appeared in a state close to rapture watching Obama speak. Here and there one could see women crying and the some men wiping away tears too.
.......
In the US today there are echoes of that Rainbow Revolution. Through the media and on the streets people are getting a bit giddy over Obama. In this man they are projecting a new course - one that he says he will lead - where the US buries the culture wars, charts a new course in bipartisan politics and heralds a new dawn for America. ......
........
And therein lays the danger for Obama. The Obama shuttle has made it into orbit but at some point he's going to have to land this thing back on Earth.
.........
But the danger remains for Obama in managing the cult-like fervour. Obviously, he's no messiah and lofty expectations of his supporters is something that Obama is also acutely aware of. In stockmarket parlance, Obama's share price is soaring on expected future earnings. Clinton, 20 years in the public eye, is like the industrial conglomerate: steady share price and reliable dividends. Think of Obama as Google and Clinton as General Electric.
.............
"We can do this," he told ecstatic supporters on Tuesday night. "It will not be easy. It will require struggle and sacrifice. There will setbacks and we will make mistakes."
But then Obama, in the next sentence, in attempt to appeal to more voters out there, didn't even mention the Democratic Party but instead his "movement" saying: "I want to speak directly to all those Americans who have yet to join this movement but still hunger for change: we need you. We need you to stand with us, and work with us, and help us prove that together, ordinary people can still do extraordinary things".
.........
In his Super Tuesday speech Obama said "we are the ones we've been waiting for", attempting to make the case the time was now to get some "change" in Washington: a post-partisan world where politicians reach across the aisle for the common good. "This time can be different because this campaign for the presidency of the United States of America is different," he said. "It's different not because of me. It's different because of you."
.......
"Rather than focusing on any specific issue or cause - other than an amorphous desire for change - the message is becoming dangerously self-referential. The Obama campaign all too often is about how wonderful the Obama campaign is."
I hear that too in the voices of Obama's staff constantly, themselves referring to this "cult of Obama".
"Even if he doesn't go all the way, and I'm not being defeatist, I'm so thrilled to be a part of this and see the size of the crowds turning out," one staffer tells me.
.........
. He may well build an unstoppable momentum. And then the giddiness might evaporate and be replaced with something else. In marketing they call it post-purchase disappointment. If he gets the Democratic Party's nomination another test begins anew: how to turn the narrative which is all about striving for what is possible, to one where people are suddenly asking how are you actually going to do it?

220. it doesn't appear to be a verbatim quote
"... a light will shine through that window, a beam of light will come down upon you, you will experience an epiphany ... and you will suddenly realize that you must go to the polls and vote for Obama" - - Barack Obama Lebanon, New Hampshire. January 7, 2008

The precise quotation was retracted by CNN:
The original quote was removed entirely from the article in later publication, but we offer as evidence this reposting of the CNN article in full on January 28th by blogger 'Fair Proxy Web' <meta-editor's note: LOL!>

... "a light will shine through that window, a beam of light will come down upon you, you will experience an epiphany … and you will suddenly realize that you must go to the polls and vote for Obama," the Democrat said in Hanover.

http://obamamessiah.blogspot.com/2008/01/obama-to-disciples-you-will-experience.html

This may well be the stuff of chain letters, since the primary source appears to be "Mike in Kentucky":

This version of the quote is likewise attributed to CNN campaign coverage by "Mike in Kentucky" on 1/08/08.

http://obamamessiah.blogspot.com/2008/01/obama-to-disciples-you-will-experience.html ("campaign coverage" by an anonymous poster on CNN?)

There's a couple versions floating around, with alternating clues as to context:

"I am going to try to be so persuasive, so that those of you who are still wavering...will suddenly come to the conclusion -- a light beam will shine through -- will light you up -- and you will experience an epiphany -- I have to vote for Barack!"

And then the pragmatist spoke: "When you do, we would love you to fill out one of these supporter cards to memorialize this moment."

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/01/06/swept_up_in_the_obama_moment_1.html

At an early-morning rally the day of the New Hampshire vote, he told some 300 students at the Dartmouth College gym: "My job this morning is to be so persuasive . . . that a light will shine through that window, a beam of light will come down upon you, you will experience an epiphany, and you will suddenly realize that you must go to the polls and vote for Barack." One of the reasons to vote for him, he continued, was his pledge to end the Bush-Cheney era of "wiretaps without warrants."

221. Here you go:
http://www.barackobama.com/2007/02/10/remarks_of_senator_barack_obam_11.php

"But Washington has a long way to go. And it won't be easy. That's why we'll have to set priorities. We'll have to make hard choices. And although government will play a crucial role in bringing about the changes we need, more money and programs alone will not get us where we need to go. Each of us, in our own lives, will have to accept responsibility - for instilling an ethic of achievement in our children, for adapting to a more competitive economy, for strengthening our communities, and sharing some measure of sacrifice. So let us begin. Let us begin this hard work together. Let us transform this nation."

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2008/02/barack_obamas_potomac_primary.html

"Because hope is not blind optimism. I know how hard it will be to make these changes. I know this because I fought on the streets of Chicago as a community organizer to bring jobs to the jobless in the shadow of a shuttered steel plant. I've fought in the courts as a civil rights lawyer to make sure people weren't denied their rights because of what they looked like or where they came from. I've fought in the legislature to take power away from lobbyists. I've won some of those fights, but I've lost some of them too. I've seen good legislation die because good intentions weren't backed by a mandate for change.

The politics of hope does not mean hoping things come easy. Because nothing worthwhile in this country has ever happened unless somebody, somewhere stood up when it was hard; stood up when they were told - no you can't, and said yes we can."

http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0108/Obamas_South_Carolina_victory_speech.html

"That is the country I see. That is the country you see. But now it is up to us to help the entire nation embrace this vision. Because in the end, we are not just up against the ingrained and destructive habits of Washington, we are also struggling against our own doubts, our own fears and our own cynicism. The change we seek has always required great struggle and sacrifice. And so this is a battle in our own hearts and minds about what kind of country we want and how hard we're willing to work for it.

So let me remind you tonight that change will not be easy. That change will take time. There will be setbacks, and false starts, and sometimes we will make mistakes. But as hard as it may seem, we cannot lose hope. Because there are people all across this country who are counting us; who can't afford another four years without health care or good schools or decent wages because our leaders couldn't come together and get it done."

Like on Thursday night?

No questions on the Clinton tax returns.
No questions on which Saudi sheiks are paying for the Clinton library.
No questions about the withholding of the Clinton White House papers.

But alot of time spent on Obama's non-plagiarism.

Is that the pony ride we're talking about?

I disagree that this tactic is good for her campaign.

She will likely be seen as attacking a message of hope, by many, while savvy pundits may catch the straw man that implies Obama believes it will be a cake walk.

Where is Mandy Grunwald? She should take over Hillary's campaign because her style promoted a positive, nurturing maternal persona.

The whole "I will end partisanship!" bs
Partisanship has existed since Adams and Jefferson. The reason for that is people simply have different views on the role of government in general and what should be done on specific issues. There isn't a nefarious cabal that conspires to divide the country. It is natural.

241. That's disingenuous. He has never said he would end partisanship.
What he HAS said, is that he would work towards it. He has also addressed the hope message in his campaign, and stated that it would take hard work and cooperation. If you admit this would be the case for any candidate, that bipartisanship and cooperation would be required to bring about real change, then I think you've just admitted that he is clearly the better choice for change. Hillary tearing down the message, or over-simplifying it only serves to show that she isn't fully on board when she campaigns about change. By doing this, she is more or less admitting to campaigning for something she doesn't really believe is possible.

17. My Favorite Line: "You are not going to be able to wave a magic wand..
and have the special interests disappear".

Well Hillary - YOU sure as hell aren't, because they've basically funded your entire fucking campaign.

Obama however will have a bit more luck with that wand.. he can tell special interests to fuck off, because his campaign has been funded by me, and about 1,000,000 others just like me.. $20 at a time.

What a stupid line... and it just goes back to Obama saying that he's a "Hope Monger".. and people just want to suck the hope right out of him. I guess if he was a bitter pessimist like Hillary & Co - then that would be better?

Man, every day she amazes me with her ability to look stupider and more calculated then the day before.

Hillary 3.0: No, You Can't!

I mean, if she's going to argue that change is impossible and we shouldn't even reach for it, then isn't she unknowingly making the case that she's not going to change one damned thing?

That should go over well with the "Right Track/Wrong Track" crowd. :eyes:

I know Obama has recently been saying he knows it's going to be hard to get the changes he thinks need to be made. But I think Hillary's message is pertinent to some of his supporters who may think working together with the opposition is something that's never been tried before and that's all we need to get good legislation passed.

99. And it was given to 300 ivy leagers, who are certainly able to percieve irony
HANOVER, N.H.--Barack Obama may be leading the Democratic presidential pack in every major poll here, but that didn't dissuade the Illinois senator from a final early-morning rally with the Facebook generation.

Clearly not content to leave their votes to the whims of online politicking, the Illinois senator stepped onto a stage fashioned in a Dartmouth College gymnasium, pulled an index card from his inside jacket pocket, and launched into a familiar set of talking points centered on what has become a familiar theme for his campaign: change and hope.

"My job this morning is to be so persuasive...that a light will shine through that window, a beam of light will come down upon you, you will experience an epiphany, and you will suddenly realize that you must go to the polls and vote for Barack," he told a crowd of about 300 Ivy Leaguers--and, by the looks of it, a handful of locals who managed to gain access to what was supposed to be a students-only event.

I noticed she is not wearing a different outfit for each event. Now she is wearing the same jacket she was on Super Tuesday. Yesterday, she wore the same dress for the Black Caucus event as she did when she tried to bash Obama for the flyers.

I would think she cannot afford a new $1000 outfit each day anymore, and now has to start washing and wearing the same ones from a few weeks ago. Looks like the same necklace from the Ohio debate too.

161. Hillary's campaign mismanagement really kills her "experienced" message
That she has so poorly managed things really kills the experience message I think. She can trash Obama's hope message, but considering she had no idea her campaign was out of cash, didn't plan for after Super Tuesday and has not been able to adapt to changing circumstances, you really have to question how well a Clinton presidency would do under fire.

I'll try and be as gentle as possible. I know that Mark and Harold have been telling you that you can keep on, but they're just lying to you. No, no, it's true. Think about it -- the hotel bills, the donuts, they're just using you and having a good time along the way. I know, it's something you've always wanted, you might have a chance to even try again in a few years, but right now you're just -- how do I put this gently, you're just embarrassing yourself. I've called Mandy, she's going to come by in a few minutes. I want you to get in the car with her, and she'll take you back to New York. I'm sorry.

Here we go again, wrap poor little Obama up in cotton wool. I think he can take the heat on his own. If he can't, he better get out of the race now because he will be crucified by a GOP that will attack on a level that Clinton never will. Obama needs to TOUGHEN UP as do his supporters. Clinton has been slandered and maligned for a decade and she's survived. I think Obama-boy can survive a bit of flak as well. Stop being so precious.

Obama has said countless times in his speeches that the change he wants to help bring about will be very difficult to bring about and requires the dedication of a wide group of Americans...

Simply put, he understands what a democracy is: for the people, by the people. And he's going to hold us accountable as well as give us the opportunity to do our part. It's high time someone did!
