And?
I don't think she expected to get her ass handed to her like she did tonight.
She tried to be vicious at times in her Farrakhan response and SNL snide remark while Obama kept the discourse at a very high level and didn't try to engage in the kind of gutter politics that Hillary was attempting to bring the debate too.
In addition, Hillary has always been a policy wonk, a great debater, but Obama beat her in this category tonight. He was articulate, detailed, calm and turned in her best debate performance yet.
Hillary has to be dissapointed that her threat turned out to be hollow and unsubstantiated.

1. She kind of painted herself into a corner with that "meet me in Ohio" challenge. |
|
She couldn't afford to come out punching, especially after Dodd's gentle suggestions, but she couldn't be seen to wimp out, either. Tough place to be in.

2. She embarassed herself tonight, again. She recovered a bit at the end once more, but |
|
there is really no reason to continue this. She needs to quietly and graciously drop out on March 5th. The only reason to continue is to continue through weeks and endless weeks of Hillary Fits, subjected to endless personal attacks and smears on Obama, more Hillary Fits.. ultimately weakening our nominee, who will be Obama.
Nothing she can do will change the dynamic. It needs to stop. Enough already.

8. I agree and I think the Party agrees. I heard today that efforts are already |
|
picking up for super delegates to endorse Obama and for people to quietly encourage Hillary that this needs to stop.
At this point, like this debate, its beating a dead horse. We need to start running Obama against McCain and the party needs to unite behind him. Hillary is like Huckabee on steroids at this point.

13. It won't. She'll never quit. Mark my words (and I hope I'm |
|
wrong).......even if she ties him somewhere she'll stay in and she'll probably go to court and SUE to get the Michigan and Florida delegates and then she'll try to bring about a scorched earth convention that will destroy our party, and in the meantime, damn it, McCain will stand by and hoot and have all these months to campaign and make us look like kids slapping each other in the sandbox.
Hillary, please stop it before your ego destroys everything!!!

4. I don't think she's much of a debater at all, frankly. |
|
She tries to cram so many points into one response that the audience just loses the point. There's no flow, no drawing out the point and nailing it. She just shows off that she knows a bunch of stuff. The audience just remembers that she said a lot of ... stuff.

That's exactly what Obama means by that term. Laundry lists with no over-reaching vision. She almost spoke of one at the end of the debate, changing all the rules of who could do what. That has the feel of a campaign theme. Fixing stuff just isn't very inspiring.

7. She tried to be tough... |
|
Edited on Tue Feb-26-08 11:20 PM by TwoSparkles
...and I think this was her last chance at trying to thwart Obama's momentum.
First, her "toughness" came off as caustic, and she was booed on a couple of occasions. It was obvious that she couldn't play the bitter candidate through the debate.
Secondly, Obama is the MASTER at taking an attack and diffusing it. Love him or not--the man calmly and coolly listens to your argument, and deflates it by presenting his own side, calmly point out his disagreements and then he highlights the commonalities he has with you.
Obama owns her every time--because if she continues to look bitter--after he so eloquently builds bridges--she would look like a loon!
I think she entered this debate, hoping to own him with some really tough language. She just couldn't hold onto that posture--because his cool, calm, and gracious demeanor makes it impossible to hold up that tone.
You could see her slowly acquiesce to his level, and drop her vitriol, and in the end he set the tone for the both of them.

The problem is that she cannot engage in the type of vitrol that she would like with Obama. Obama deflects it. He's very good at it. When she tries to get testy, it makes her look petty instead of strong like she is hoping to portray herself.

That is exactly why he is able to appeal across party lines. He doesn't insult people for disagreeing. He appeals to them with why his position is valid, rather than belittling their own position.

To use a sports analogy that so many love, he made all this basketball field goal attempts, and she rimmed out a number of shots. He made all his free throws, and she missed several of hers. He got no technical fouls. She did.
Those are the things that decide games, and that's why he won. He doesn't make dumb mistakes, doesn't get petty. She does.

...its bad politics on every level.
Hey, yeah...brilliant lets go ahead and RAISE EXPECTATIONS by setting the bar so high in the middle of heated must-win contests for you where you a losing in one and slipping in the other that there's no possible way you can meet them!
Let's just throw your high negatives out the window and instead choose tactics that only reinforce the worst stereotypes that detractors have about you.... this is a great way to win the nomination.....
...for president of the state of denial.

Like that last thing about "denounced" v.s. "reject". How silly--but someone with a big ego might have sat there and bickered about it. Obama just said, "ok then, I reject and denounce". Which made her look petty and silly.
This is what will make him a great President: he is willing to compromise, cooperate, bend--not stay rigid, stubborn and unyielding.
She may be a fighter, as she has told us over and over and over, but he is a born diplomat.
