There have been several interpretations of Rachel Maddow's comment last night that "McCain won" the debate. Here's my take and, at the end of the two-hour trudge, I must say I felt the same. To think there would be yet another week of dizzying punditry, of Ballot Bowls and Hardball Magic Numbers, of spinning and jockeying and waiting for the next attack that would need to be parried.. well, it was enough to make one enthusiastic lifelong democrat cringe.
Maddow's comments simply signified the absolute truth that this "race" is becoming petty and wearying.. that the only thing occuring now is that we are beating a dead horse. Democratic voters have seen TWENTY debates. Nothing is being served by continued smears and attacks, by Hillary trying on a new face every day, trying a new attack to sully the eventual nominee, and further attacking the millions of voters who are turning out. There is nothing to gain by trying to stifle their enthusiasm. Yes, in that continued scenario of slogging through the quicksand, McCain wins.
That we, as a party, are encouraging her to continue and agreeing that she has any hope of winning, is political suicide. But Hillary won't give up.. she'll fight on no matter who or what she has to destroy. Her ego will not allow her to admit there is a new generation, a new era of American politics emerging that does not include her brand of negativity and destructive campaigning. This is not just about the numbers or mathematical probabilities. It is about ushering in a new Democratic Majority that can and will last for decades, that can and will repair the damage that the "moral majority" has inflicted upon it.
Maddow is right: Last night was an exercise in futility and McCain won - because democrats will not stand up to the Clinton Machine and Just Say No.
I, for one, am finished. Hopefully the party will come to its senses and Hillary will come to hers. I will continue to campaign and work for the eventual nominee, the Senator from Illinois, Barack Hussein Obama. And I think I am only one of probably millions of voters who are ready for this primary race to be over. I'm ready to stand beside Senator Obama, face McCain and the right wing, and take back my country. I pray Hillary will get out of the way and allow us to do that. One week more. It seems like an eternity.
