My Own Private Hillary (Mary Lyon)
by Mary Lyon, From The Left -- World News Trust

This campaign has me feeling as though I'm totally schitzo. I'm a two-headed monster. No -- double that. It's not merely Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama sitting on my shoulders, battling each other for my head, my heart, and my vote. There's also a second war raging within my own head and heart. It's me versus me, and I'm guessing Hillary is struggling with much the same conflict. It's tearing her campaign and her public persona from stem to stern, and it's leaving me feeling as overloaded as the Coen brothers at the end of Oscar night.

Hillary Clinton doesn't seem able to decide which Hillary she wants to be. Neither do I -- about her or about myself. The media in the last few weeks has covered her mainly from the "can this campaign be saved" standpoint. What should she do to reverse what appears to be an increasingly inevitable pro-Obama trend? Should she go negative or positive? Swords or olive branches? In one venue she's reaching out to shake his hand, noting how honored she is to share the stage with him. In another she's shaking a fistful of papers at him like some strident school-marm and hollering "shame on you, Barack Obama!" As of the Democratic Debate in Cleveland, Ms. Congeniality returns, with measured arguments and renewed gentility. He's consistent. She's up and down and sideways. It's making me a bit seasick.

I don't know which way to go, either, Madame Senator. I think I can sense that fire roaring in your gut, the indignation over what you've witnessed over the past seven-and-some miserable years. The progress you and your husband achieved amid great adversity during his presidency has been turned on its head by the arrogant, deceitful wrecking crew that stampeded in after the two of you left the White House. And now, you're seeing the Invincibility Cloak you wore a year ago rendered thread-bare. I can guess how earnestly you believe that you have the ultimate skills to bring to the ultimate job, and how you yearn to contribute them. You genuinely want to do good. It must be awfully hard to take the high road, especially when so many of those surrounding you must be telling you to go scorched-earth. Most of the time any more, I want to go that way, too. To borrow from your spouse -- I feel your pain.

What the battering of the Bush regime has left me with is a deep, roiling anger. It actually goes farther back than that. I've watched since the Reagan era as the Republican juggernaut has gained momentum and gradually shifted the tectonic plates of American politics for the worse. We've been shoved, as a nation, farther toward the strident, the negative, the combative, the hostile, the regressive, the in-yer-face. Perhaps that's why Hillary's fiery campaign persona seems to be so off-putting. Maybe in a small way it's symptomatic of what ails our nation on a larger scale. As a liberal, the viewpoint I hold so dear has been painted with poison, demonized and marginalized -- for far too long by now. Newt Gingrich's little book of words and phrases that he handed out to all his GOPAC pals during the '80's in order to win the language wars and manipulate public perception has done its job alright. It's gone way beyond vilifying my political party to the point of repackaging ME, too, as a bad guy. Gingrich and his friends didn't have me in mind, certainly, but the effect has been the same. I've watched the devolution, and I've taken it very personally.

10. Yes, she is. DAMN. If ONLY she'd known enough to resist the war...
I still like Hillary. I think she brings ginormous skills and talents to the table. But dammit...

I like Barack also. I punched the card for him on Super Tuesday when we had our primary out here in CA. I think he'll be SUPERB, and a stellar way to bring a definitive end to this nauseating bush era.

9. Newt Gringrich's little book of words and phrases ...
The word for 2008 will be "patriotism." Not "hope." Not "change." The word will be "patriotism."

It's the only thing McCain is up to his eyeballs with.

I think most of us are feeling so much anger and pain after the last seven years. But we do need to come together and find the strength to move foward.

24. Oh, Mary, I read this and thought of some advice you recently
gave me. It's time to clean out the closets.

Starting this week, I am limiting the time I listen to the election news because I have feelings of anxiety over it as well. For too many weeks now, I have overdosed on following the campaign. In an effort to restore a sense of balance to my life, I limit myself to ONLY TWO HOURS daily of election news.

It's only Wednesday, but I am feeling better. Thanks for the wonderful thread. I could only read half tonight because I am over my two-hour limit today. I will be back tomorrow night to read the rest. Now ... to the closet cleaning.

Sam

I'm still addicted. But your point is a good one - sometimes it really does help to take a breather. Time-outs are beneficial for grown-ups too. It's like a mini-vacation. You get back to the routine feeling refreshed. And you may even find something really cool that you'd forgotten about in the back of that closet!

33. Just went over to the Huffington Post and found the responses
to your thread very interesting. Congratulations on landing there with your words. I am sure as time progresses, you will find comfort in the way things settle, and you too will be wearing a really cool forgotten thread rediscovered in the back of the closet. Me: I found a pair of hot pink Capri's with tiny white and lime polka dots. One cannot wear these pants and feel political anxiety; you just simply are too focused on trying to keep them up -- yep, low riders, my first pair, discreetly disguised by a hot pink v-necked sweater. I believe wearing this outfit to any political rally would gain me entrance to either a Hillary or a Barack event, no questions asked.

Congratulations again on your fine work. Hope to see more soon. So take a well-deserved break and report back soon on your wardrobe de jour!

Sam

36. Thanks, sweetie!
LOTS of stuff in the back of my closet because I'm such a pack-rat - I seldom throw anything away. And I have indeed lived to see that comment bear out - that if you keep something long enough, it comes back in style. Or your kid will want it. My daughter regularly informs me that I must not get rid of (fill in the blank here) because she has her eye on it. I have some crazy stuff. Along with the sack cloth and ashes!

It's a day later and I'm still walking on air!

 Samantha!

41. This reminds me of my mood ring from the 70s my daughter
discovered in my jewelry box. I spotted it on her hand and asked from whence it came. I promptly took re-possession of it, and went out and found the later version for her. I am thinking I need to retrieve it for this election. I should wear it when I hear reports on both the Hillary campaign and the Obama campaign. If I observe the ring closely while listening to the polls and predictions, perhaps I can report the color signals emitted from the mood ring here to DU. Since none of has the proverbial political crystal ball to predict the outcome of this primary, perhaps the changing of the colors of the mood ring will give us our most accurate hints as to the outcome!!! At least the challenge of reading it will relieve the high stress and present a ridiculous distraction.

Let me know if your head does not clear and you need me to Federal Express the pink Capri's. I can see you Mary Lyon in them now if we only find the appropriate head scarf and shades to compliment the pants. :hippie:

In the interim, I am pleased to kick your thread!

Sam

as being a bad thing!

We should all have fire in our belly when we need it, have a soft side, a tough shell, have a good defense and a good offense, and be prepared to act as the situation demands.

I think it's innately ridiculous to insist that a person be the same all the time. In fact, one thing that turns me off Obama is his persona - he seems disengaged, not inclined to emotion.

38. Excellent point!
I'm guessing we might see more feeling from Obama as the heat turns up and he faces more virulent attacks from the bad guys. And who could blame him????

However, I also see a certain appeal from him in his "steady-as-he-goes" persona. He doesn't seem to get ruffled or rattled, and I would hope that translates to a chief executive who would be cool under fire and flood and hurricane and terrorism and yes, republi-CONS. Granted, everything is and has been going his way so it's not surprising that we wouldn't see him get unspooled.

We were watching some "West Wing" episodes the other night and there was a scene in one of the later seasons wherein Leo advises President Bartlet that - "we won't let you do something stupid" - in effect, there are people around him who will keep him from falling on his ass and making a mistake and doing something ill-advised even if he has a seizure or something unforseen. Knowing the people bush has around him, I'd worry that they care about no such contingencies (most of them, I think, would welcome him doing something drastic since they feel the same way if not stronger). But seems to me Obama would have people at his back who would, indeed, help him keep a cool head. I seriously doubt he'd be recruiting from the PNAC.
