Regardless of nominee, let's say the Dems win the general election....
Given the current set up of Congress Ds vs Rs, how much do you think can actually be accomplished? Will it always be a fight to get Dem-introduced bills passed, or will they fly on through? Ditto for nominations to positions like the SCOTUS.

Clinton and Obama are offering change. Can they truly deliver? (Just trying to gauge how much to get my hopes up. I've gotten so cynical over the last few years I'm kinda scared to hope for good things. )

1. Quite a lot can be accomplished.
Quite a lot would be getting done right now were it not for dubya's threats to veto every goddamn piece of legislation not written by Cheney's office.

3. Which is yet another reason why the Dem has to win, otherwise McCain can
keep **'s policies in place and still play the veto game.

2. The polls are very close now
These are good issues to raise in November after the general. It's too soon to lose focus on the prize. We need to register as many new Dems as possible now, and badger them to the polls in November. The polls are too close now to assume that a Democrat will win in November.

4. I think your question really depends on how many seats the Dems can pick up...
in both the House and Senate..... They will of course have a Dem President, so that will help immensly....

9. Cross your Fingers
that Trent Lott's seat going to a dem in November. I'm rather cautiously optimistic. A former governor is running for the seat and it should be a pretty good race.

14. We'll just have to change the rules
We can drink when they bring up phrases like health care, eliminating tax cuts for rich, ending war.

20. Remember that there's 30 Senate races and all the House races in November, too.
There's something like 12 vulnerable Republican held Senate seats and only one vulnerable Dem. Even assuming that those break half and half, that leaves us with 57-43 majority in the Senate. Then we'd need only three Republicans to insure no filibusters. And confirmation of appointees only requires 51 votes.

21. If the one vulnerable Dem
you are referring to is Mary Landrieu, she won't be an easy candidate to beat. She's not the greatest Senator but she is a kickass candidate. Whoever runs against her better eat his Wheaties.

22. We should have more of a majority
Edited on Wed Feb-27-08 05:10 PM by VancSouthpaw
in both houses, and with Hillary or Obama in the White House not vetoing every progressive bill that lands on his/her deak, I'd think it would be a lot easier, Reid & co. notwithstanding.

On edit: If you're wondering what a deak is, it's kind of like a desk - only spelled wrong.
