For the past (nearly) 24 hours I have been listening to talk radio, and it seems to be necessary for both the host and (in most but not all cases) the callers to adore one candidate and despise and demonize the other.
Why have things come to this? It is so destructive, depressing, despairing.
IF THE ONLY WAY to elect Obama is to destroy Hillary Clinton, or vice versa, maybe we need to rethink the principles of what it means to be Democrats. Because this is throwing the baby out with the bathwater, either way, so long as any of us support one and hate the other.
Why is it so unfashionable to be respectful towards two individuals, in pursuit of the most powerful political office on the face of the earth, who appear to be highly intelligent, articulate, compassionate, strategically-gifted, and inspiring?
It's so sad to me for some reason that it's become so imperative to destroy the opponent rather than embrace both of them and prefer one of them.
Just for the record, I prefer Obama (as I've stated here before, since Edwards, and before him Biden, dropped out), but I am definitely not very proud of Obama's supporters. Many of them are arrogant, narcissistic in a way Obama would disparage, and shamelessly practice the rhetoric of destruction that is diametrically opposed to the very embodiment of Obama's spirit and message. He has not been disrespectful to HRC. He would not approve of the willfully deceptive obliteration of Hillary Clinton.
Things would be better for all of us if we allow nature to take its course: Obama will most likely win, Clinton will find some other purpose, and nobody goes away mortally injured or in disrepute. Because both of these people can do fantastic things, if we don't destroy one in the process of anointing the other.
Please, be not only passionate but intelligent.
Peace
