From a delegate count perspective the race is still close. For the first time in a long time we do not have a front runner for the nomination who it appears will have the delegates needed to secure that nomination based on primary and caucus wins. By any definition that means both Clinton and Obama are still contenders - unless one of them withdraws or there is a stampeed of Super Delegates to one of their sides. Either of those things could happen but for now they both are contenders. One is the favorite and the other is the underdog, but both are still contenders. It's the truth.

On a practical level, since Obama is new on the national scene, had he lost 11 in a row there most likely would have been a real Super Delegate stampeed to Clinton by now that would have doomed him. Though there have been some switches to Obama by Super Delegates it isn't yet in large numbers. If that happens the media will stop treating Clinton like a contender, simple as that, but now nothing like that is likely to happen on a large scale basis before the results of the next primary contests are known.

The odds certainly favor Obama now, and they may or may not favor him more after the next round of primaries - but everyone knew all month that Clinton seemed to have strength in Texas and Ohio compared to the support she had in most states voting after Super Tuesaday. Few will call the race over when Obama doesn't have a final majoritiy of delegates, with those big states still looming that could reverse the momentum of the race.

It's not as if the media treats Clinton like a front runner or co-favorite anymore. Their treatment is in line with reality. She has a steep uphill climb to have a chance of winning it but she still has an outside chance. Word.

No one was pushing John Edwards out of the race back in 2004 when he only won one primary against John Kerry for the longest time. Hillary has won a lot more than Edwards did then. No doubt they will be writing her political obituary if Clinton loses Texas and Ohio - but right now she remains a contender.
