I am a Hillary Clinton supporter, although I would also be extremely content with Obama winning the candidacy/presidency. I was a rabid Gore supporter, too, but sometimes I would cringe at his attempts to be humorous or to wax warm and fuzzy in debates or speeches. That just wasn't his personality. From what I heard and saw (I met him once) he was and is a friendly, warm, pleasant person in personal situations, just as I've heard that Hillary is. But there's something about the shared "policy wonk" in them that contributes to a wooden, forced and inauthentic appearance at some crucial times.
I think it's possible they both got bad advice from "handlers" about trying to make themselves more "appealing". The MSM loved to beat up on Gore for his brilliance, his command of issues, and his seriousness of nature. In subtle ways, the same thing is happening to Hillary. Her every emotion, nuanced or forced, is dissected down to the flutter of her eyelashes (or not). And of course it is the handlers who live and die by these assessments.
Hillary needs to just be herself. It may be too late for her, I don't know, and we won't know for a couple of weeks yet, I guess. But I have waited all my life to vote for a woman for president (thank you, Bill Clinton, for the words that express what I have been feeling for the last six months), and if it doesn't happen, I'll still be forever grateful to Hillary for getting us a little closer to that goal. But I'll still be disappointed. What Obama has, and what both Hillary and Al Gore lack(ed), is faith in their own authenticity. Maybe that's a lesson we can all learn for the future. Thanks for listening, just had to get that off my chest.
