The past year of campaigning has birthed grandiose political events. But this afternoon’s press conference at the National Press Club was quite a different scene.

As the perennial presidential candidate Ralph Nader announced that former San Francisco Supervisor Matt Gonzalez would be his running mate, there was not a Nader supporter with a sign in sight. With no were cheers or applause, the room was so quiet you could hear the photographers’ shutters click.

More than a dozen TV cameras rolled as Gonzalez said that he is not disillusioned and he “understands what stands before us,” but he added that he has “never entered a political campaign without the idea that it could be won.”

Nader said he hopes that his bid for the White House will change the current political discourse. “We’re both honored to be running together and looking forward to addressing issues, conditions, and solutions ignored by the other major party candidates,” Nader said to approximately 60 reporters in attendance.

5. Aaaaaagh! I campaigned for Matt Gonzalez in 2003.

I would have campaigned for him last year if he had stood up and run against Gavin Newsom - who despite being for gay marriage (a good thing) has also been in rehab for drinking, turned out to be having a long-running affair with the wife of his campaign manager (or chief of staff, possibly both), and who hasn't even been able to get municipal wi-fi off the ground even though it wouldn't have cost the city a dime. Inexplicably, nobody ran against him besides the usual fringe hippies and token Republicans.

Now Matt Gonzalez is campaigning with Nader? I am SO disappointed in him. I know for a fact that he does not believe in Nader's right-on but hopelessly impractical BS. Gonzalez is not anti-business for example, he ran for mayor on a platform of fiscal responsibility and sensible, sustainable regulation that would balance environmental and economic needs. I was thrilled because I was hoping it might herald the start of a more mature green party, of the kind that can win elections like they do in Europe.

What a let-down - that's the last time I wear my campaign T-shirt in public.
