Obama campaign won't deny Canada NAFTA contact
Oh, boy. This is getting good. Watch it all the way through. They claim Hillary's campaign also contacted the Canadian government, but she FLATLY denies it and gives them clearance to release the name of anyone (because she knows it isn't true). Obama's spokesperson gives a really, really lazy non-denial.

That's a no-brainer. In fact if they DIDN'T contact Canada, I would question Hillary's diplomatic skills.

26. Common sense
As I said earlier, it's called diplomacy. I would imagine BOTH campaigns (and McCain's too) have contacted many leaders of foreign countries to discuss the relationship they can expect with their administration. And any conversation with the leadership of any North American country would obviously include NAFTA. It's a no brainer.

Roy Norton, the minister of public affairs for the Canadian embassy, is flatly denying that any Obama campaign official spoke to the Canadian ambassador in recent days or told him that Obama's anti-NAFTA stump speech is merely "campaign rhetoric."

10. From TPM:
Canadian Embassy: Report On Obama And NAFTA Is False
By Greg Sargent - February 28, 2008, 12:47PM

Roy Norton, the minister of public affairs for the Canadian embassy, is flatly denying that any Obama campaign official spoke to the Canadian ambassador in recent days or told him that Obama's anti-NAFTA stump speech is merely "campaign rhetoric."

"No, none," Norton told me when I asked him if Michael Wilson, Canada's ambassador to the U.S., had spoken to any Obama advisers recently. He added: "Neither before the Ohio debate nor since has any presidential campaign called Ambassador Wilson about NAFTA."

on going for months.

so the reporter was wrong about who called who....but I believe the content of the call.

<snip>

The Canadian embassy is proactively reaching out to the campaigns "all the time," Norton said, to try to meet with aides who might form the foreign and economic policy teams of any future administration.

"We talk about the whole range of Canada-U.S. issues which we think it's critically important that the presidential candidates be aware of including the number of jobs that depend in the United States on Canada-U.S. trade."

The Canadian Embassy says there are more than seven million jobs in the U.S. that depend on trade with Canada.

"We discuss our view that NAFTA has been very good for all three participating countries and has made the continent more competitive in the face of China, India, Brazil," Norton said.

"The Canadian Embassy confirms that at no time has any member of a presidential campaign called the Canadian Ambassador or any official at the Embassy to discuss NAFTA. Last night, the Canadian television network CTV falsely reported that such calls had been made. That story is untrue. Neither before nor since the Ohio debate has any presidential campaign called Ambassador Wilson or the embassy to raise NAFTA."

There are a few things we'd like to change - like guaranteed American access to our energy supplies.

Of course, I wouldn't shed a tear if NAFTA just went away entirely.

It hasn't done us much good in trade disputes.

69. More then likely there is some winking going on here......
To discuss NAFTA is where the word-play can come in. They may have called for something else, but discussed it. ;)

The embassy said this "At no time has any member of a presidential campaign called theCanadian ambassador or any official at the embassy to discuss NAFTA,".

But the chief source for the story came back, and "But just yesterday, one of the primary sources of the story, ahigh-ranking member of the Canadian embassy, gave CTV more details ofthe call. He even provided a timeline. He has since suggested it wasperhaps a miscommunication."
