Poll question: New poll with reduced Obama candidate list! Who do YOU pick for VP? |
|
Edited on Fri Feb-29-08 12:58 AM by PretzelWarrior
A couple days ago I had a poll of choices that included Al Gore, Hillary Clinton, etc. The top 3 vote getters out of that round are in today's poll. I won't tell you which ones got the most votes.....I'm curious how it stacks up with only 3 choices.

1. Gives credibility on defense and foreign policy without risking a Senate seat 2. Adds a little gray hair to balance the ticket. 3. Builds bridges back to the Clinton camp 4. Campaigned effectively for democrats all over the country in '06 5. Helps put some southern and central red states in play.

38. I voted "Edwards" too. I have to wonder if Edwards isn't Obama's choice. |
|
Edwards hasn't endorsed yet...has he? If he and Obama have an 'understanding' maybe he hasn't endorsed to foreclose the idea of quid pro quo. He and Obama seemed to have a chemistry during some of the debates.

13. Clark for Sec. of Defense (if he's eligible). Edwards for A.G. Webb? |
|
I don't know if Webb would bring enough to the ticket, but he would be interesting. Plus, he's just likeable, and a strong Democrat with a square jaw, and some cajones. He has said he's not interested in V.P., though. ????

that Clinton/Clark do have some sort of deal already in the works. But if Obama wins, don't you think Clark would consider the VP slot if asked? Would he would turn down that spot out of loyalty to Clinton even if she loses?

24. I STRONGLY think, for reasons both principled and political, that a WOMAN running mate would be best |
|
I have suggested Barbara Boxer, for a whole slew of reasons (she has LOTS of experience in politics, VERY much a positive candidate with very few negatives, good on environmental issues -- keeping them front and center where they should be -- etc.
Some have noted that if Obama/Boxer were to win, (and we still can't be sure the nominee WILL be Obama, only probably at this point), the Governator would be able to appoint her temporary successor to the Senate. I don't think that should preclude her unless there is another candidate at least as good. (Some have suggested Gov Sibelius of KS, or others, and that is an interesting debate. My knowledge of all these figures, including Boxer, is very limited -- and I'd welcome people weighing in with articles on the various most plausible women OTHER THAN HRC for the nat'l ticket, and their various qualities plus and minus)
I know it might be seen as a slap in the face to Hillary, but I think if Obama wins he can VERY well reward Hillary plenty, with her in a leading role in US politics, perhaps more important in the short/medium term than the VP; I think her negatives, however unfairly acquired, point to someone else for the ticket (plus I think there are others who would probably be better presidents but who just don't want to go through the MEDIA CIRCUS of the primary elections).

29. The thinking is this: there are MANY women who will be disappointed at Hillary's defeat, and w/o... |
|
a woman on the ticket might at least be VERY disenthused (is that a word -- well I guess it is now). Remember that the majority of voters in election after election, ESPECIALLY where it looks like a woman stands a serious chance of winning, as in the Democratic primaries, are indeed women. We have had now some 43 presidents, all of them male. The notion of electing a woman (not just having Ferraro on a doomed ticket, as in 84) is indeed appealing. I think however that Hillary's negatives (which have VERY LITTLE to do with her gender per se) could be all but entirely avoided, while some of her special appeal could be brought together, solidifying the base of support for the Democratic national ticket with a woman on the ticket, especially one with the appeal and the lack of negatives like Barbara Boxer.
In California, she has shown her immense appeal time and time again -- she is both experienced and politically proven. I do NOT know enough about her to know what drawbacks -- or alleged drawbacks -- there are to her on the ticket specifically. But as for a woman finally ELECTED to the presidency (or at least the VP) and in a good position to run for president NOT AS THE SPOUSE OF A FORMER PRESIDENT OR OTHER MALE POLITICAL LEADER -- I think a LOT of women out there feel it is LONG overdue, and that feeling has been stirred but, if, as seems likely, Obama wins the nomination, not really gratified in this election.
I think it is politically wise for these reasons, and would insist that there are plenty of qualified women in politics to choose from -- and Sen Boxer illustrates one very good example.

37. thanks for the answer. I tend to disagree, but there's room for that here |
|
If I had assurance that Dems would win the White House, I'd be in full support of a woman on the ticket. As it is, I just think that is one more weight to drag us down. I could be wrong on that...but it is my opinion.
What would be REALLY cool is getting a new veep for 2nd term and having a woman at that time. WOW. Sets them up for a 2016 run after 8 years of Obama.

39. "one more weight to drag us down ..." -- so people would NOT vote Dem b/c of a woman on the ticket? |
|
Is there any evidence supporting that -- if there is I'd be interested, as regardless of how politically incorrect a line of thinking is, I try to consider it on its merits. Usually I find that the supposedly hard-headed evaluations (like Harvard President Summers doubting the abilities of women in the sciences) are not really hard-headed (in the positive sense) at all.
But if there's reason to believe that a woman on the ticket poses problems, I am all ears.

Edwards has done that already and didn't help Kerry much. Neither Webb or Clark have much political experience and Clark is a BIG Clinton supporter and has written op-eds against Obama amoung other things. He won't be the VP pick. It'll be a Govenor and someone who can appeal to crossovers.

31. Why in the world would he pick Wesley Clark??? |
|
I mean I don't have anything personally against the man. I liked him when he was a candidate for president. However, he has openly supported Hillary. He has ALWAYS been closely connected with the Clintons. Why in the world would Barack want to connect himself with someone who clearly has close ties with his main opponent?

Gov. Brian Schweitzer of Montana, Gov. Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas, Gov. Janet Napolitano of Arizona, are all three good prospects to consider as well. I especially like Schweitzer. An awesome western populist with great campaigning skills. Really knows how to talk to common folks and attract I's and moderate R's in the process.
