What is in a middle name?

I know that Barack Obama's middle name is Hussein. You probably know that Barack Obama's middle name is Hussein, but do you know what John McCain's middle name is? I bet you probably don't( it is Sidney -- I looked it up). What about Bob Dole? What about Hillary Clinton -- Rodham was her Maiden name(her middle name is Dianne). I remember that my parents voted for Paul Tsongas in the Democratic primary in 1992, but damned if I can remember his middle name. Ronald Reagan? I'm drawing a blank. I know that Richard Nixon's middle name was Milhouse, but did the Simpson's creators name the character in the Simpson's after Richard Nixon? Ronald Reagan? No frickin clue on my end, and he is the bonafide saint of the Republican party. What about Thomas Jefferson or George Washington? I can't really. Jimmy Carter -- I don't know, and as far as living ex-presidents go the only one that I really admire is Jimmy Carter. The middle names that I do remember are Nixon, JFK( Fitzgerald) and FDR (Delano).



My Point in this is not to sound like I am doing an Andy Rooney impersonation, but rather to point out that The Right Wing Radio and from it the main stream media and some surrogates of the Republican Party's purpose in this is to highlight that having Hussein as a middle name is well.... not exactly politically expedient. And well, this whole wink wink, nudge nudge "I always use people's names when I am talking about people" talking point is supremely ridiculous. If you wish to appeal to bigotry, why not do it more openly? If your name happens to be Rush Limbaugh or any other right wing talk show host it is pretty much part of your job description anyway.

Can you imagine if upon entering public life in the 90s that Barack Obama had changed his name to something more "American", let's say Charlie -- and All of a sudden it is uncovered by Matt Drudge that Barack C. Obama changed his name from Hussein! Oh my god, what kind of shady Islamofacist past is this guy trying to cover up? lmfao --I'm glad that that is never going to happen, and so should you.

Barack Obama's middle name is going to be the big campaign issue? I don't want to be profane here, but that Sh*t is weak.

I think it should be up to each individual community member to chose whether they would like to adopt/retain the name or not.
I don't appreciate someone telling me what I should and shouldn't do. I didn't join this community to win popularity contests and I'm not here to 'look cute' or agree with everyone abt everything.

If I want to make a statement by adopting the middle name Hussein then I will.

Grades 1-3. Hussein, who looks about eight years old, lives happily in a Bulgarian village. He enjoys visiting his grandparents, celebrating Muslim holidays, and living in the midst of his loving, extended family. Midway through the story, though, the army arrives and forbids the villagers to speak their language, Romani, in the streets; go outside at night; or pray at the mosque. A policeman destroys the family's identity cards, which are reissued only after they have chosen Christian names. In the appended author's note, Kyuchukov explains that when he lived in Bulgaria in the mid-1980s, the Bulgarian government persecuted minorities and insisted that the one million Muslims living there choose Christian names. Until then, the author's name was Hussein. Written from a child's perspective in simple language and short sentences, this unusual picture book does an excellent job of showing the personal cost of political oppression in terms that are accessible. This book may be disturbing to preschoolers. Still, parents and teachers of older children may welcome the chance to introduce the story of Hussein, a Muslim boy whose joys, comforts, concerns, and fears are universal though firmly set in a particular place and time.
