Please. Fellow DUers.

People are in tears today over this board, and it's just not worth it.

Yes, there are assholes on this board. Are there ever. Most of them haven't been here that long, and the few long-time assholes have been known for a long time as long-time assholes to the rest of us long-timers. It's just not that big a deal. Use the ignore and alert buttons. Let the mods handle it.

I was disturbed when a long-timer I thought was not an asshole posted a severely ass-aholic thread, and I protested vehemently in the thread in question and in a couple of other threads about it, but the mods and admins have made their decision about that thread. I think it would be best to let it sink into oblivion where it belongs, rather than kicking it back up to the top. Forget about it. Edited to add - the thread has been locked. Thank you, mods!

It's just not worth getting so upset about a message board. Probably most of the assholes posting here don't give a damn about what they're saying, anyway.

This is our board. It's up to us to keep it civil. Let the stupid stuff sink to the bottom. Kick the thoughtful, reasonable threads. Stick up for reasonable civil discourse no matter who is doing it or what candidate its supporting. Most of us do this now anyway.

I'm sad to see good people getting so upset over a handful of anonymous losers who don't even care what they say.

2. Crocidile tears.
Some of the people "crying" because of "assholes" are amongst some of the biggest assholes themselves.

11. Thanks for providing the example. LOL
I lost an argument
With you today
I'm putting you on Ignore

"I wish you'd answer
My questions," you say
I'm putting you on Ignore

I moved back my goal posts
My strawman went long
I'm putting you on Ignore

Your facts are stupid
Your opinion is wrong
I'm putting you on Ignore

You won't let me win
Your logic's absurd
I'm putting you on Ignore

You misplaced that comma
You misspelt that word
I'm putting you on Ignore

You should be on Fox News
You'd fit right in
I'm putting you on Ignore

Shut up! Shut up!
Shut up! Shut up!
I'm putting you on Ignore

You always resort to
Ad hominem attacks
I'm putting you on Ignore

You stinky ugly
Dumb poopyhead hack
I'm putting you on Ignore

You debunked my rave
You derailed my rant
Say sorry, I mustn't
Continue, I can't
I just wish you weren't
So ignorant
I'm putting you on Ignore.

7. I'm not talking about complaints about opposing views.
There are a number of long-time posters today who are understandably upset about some very offensive posts being made in the past couple of days. Some posts have nothing to do with defending a candidate or positions. They are designed to offend others.

Why anyone thinks that insulting and demeaning others will help their chosen candidate is beyond me. That's why I've concluded that most of them aren't serious about talking about candidates or issues. They're here to cause trouble, period.

I'm saying that the rest of us would do well to ignore obvious troublemakers and obviously insulting posts/threads and work to accentuate positive discourse here. We can be "tough" and strongly defend our candidates and positions without making personal attacks on others.

14. The problem is there is no balance
Edited on Fri Feb-29-08 03:13 PM by mohc
I believe most of the posters here are reasonable rational people. Everyone makes mistakes, myself included, and will say something they should not from time to time. By and large I think most posters here remain civil. But the issue is that some of the most prolific posters drown out any civility with vitriol. All it takes is one person to crash a thread, and then the responses to the crasher end up being almost as bad. I've stopped using the ignore user feature, but my hide thread list pretty much stays full recently.

16. I agree that that is the problem.
A single anonymous poster can start a fire war here that lasts for days, and the person who did it probably won't even vote!

20. It's The Internet.............
I learned a long time ago when you are on the internet anyone can be whatever or whoever they want to be. Unless there are 3-D friends that are on here most of us are anonymous. I have learned that criticism from someone that I don't even know really doesn't mean much to me. I have also learned that people are much more brave and outspoken because they can hide behind the keyboard. I have heard people (not necessarily on here) say things that they would never say face to face. It is just one of many internet boards and I come here for something to do for a short amount of time. Getting upset over something an anon says is a big waste of time.

26. Very good points! I used to get upset to the point of tears over things people posted.
This was years ago on other boards. I'm still here, but those other posters are nowhere in my life now - they were just anonymous words that rolled across my screen. Two minutes after they posted they didn't remember who I was or what we were talking about.

It's just not worth it.

24. I've never put anyone on ignore, but my mental Ignore function is...
really getting a workout lately.

I've found that it's much better for my mental health and for the state of the discussion to never respond more than twice in an argument. After twice, everyone is just saying the same things over and over, usually more hotly and less coherently; I'm not likely to change my mind or change an adversary's mind; and everyone else can make up their own mind, regardless of who has the last word. Anyone who tries to argue with me usually gets the last word because it's not worth it to me to continue it. In practice, even a second response is usually a waste of electrons.
