Barack HUSSEIN Obama, Prez
Supporters seem to play down the middle name. Opponents seem to drop it like a grenade. Supporters accuse opponents of using it. It gets TV play.

Hussein. It's his middle name. Hussein. If Dems (of both flavors) will just use it, a lot, it will no longer invoke "fear". Use Barack Hussein Obama all the time, and it will become ordinary, accepted.

A lot of presidents have middle names, some of them unusual. I've been around for Delano, S.(?), David, Fitzgerald, Baines, Milhous, Rudolph, Earl, Wilson, Herbert Walker, Jefferson, Walker, Hussein.

If we hide from it, it can be used as a weapon against the Democratic ticket. McCain will use it like a scimitar to scare the uncommitted.

If we use it, it's just a name. Hussein. Phht.

1. What kind of fucked up middle name is "David"?
Hussein means "blessing." It fits.

28. Actually Dwight Eisenhower's middle name was...Dwight.
He was born David Dwight Eisenhower, and switched his first and middle names.

3. L.A. radio host Johnny Wendell did a great mashup ...
Dave Cunningham's "Barack Hussein Obama" and some Cuban-sounding salsa music -- "Barack Hussein Obama, Barack Hussein Obama, Barck Hussein Obama," like 40 times in a row. It got to the point where I was "singing" along and laughing ... TOTALLY took the sting out of it ...

4. The more the opposition throws it at him...
The worse they look. It's childish to mock someone's name, and most Americans know that.

11. We refer to Hillary Rodham Clinton
and nobody thinks anything of it. No big deal.

And if someone called her Hillary Diane Clinton or Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton, it would be different, but also no big deal.

Just so we don't call the next president John Sidney McCain. That would be a nightmare.

that less people were inclined to vote for her if she ran as Hillary Rodham Clinton as opposed to simply Hillary Clinton.

7. what annoys me is Bush has installed hate against Muslims
it is disgraceful that innocent Muslims are being branded as evil terrorists and that even Indians who are Hindu and look a bit like Arabs are branded the same. The whole thing is disgusting. I suppose the same thing occurred in Nazi Germany?

15. Not just in Nazi Germany
We've tried to de-humanize the face of enemies (real or perceived), even without Hitler's help.

Krauts, Japs, Gooks/Slopes/Dinks, Skinnies.

It makes them easier to shoot at, perhaps.

18. I take your point ...
... it's just that the other side of this is the fact that when someone uses your full name, complete with middle name, it sounds like you're in trouble.

How many of us grew up knowing we were in shit if our parents called us by our full name?

I remember when the GOP started referring to Big Dog as "William Jefferson Clinton" - and every time I heard it, I pictured him with his head hung down as he was marched off to the principal's office.

23. You're right. When my mother used my three names
I knew I was in for it.

So who uses middle names?
Kids in trouble
Presidents
Mass murderers

And it's really only the high-profile presidents. I had to look up the middle names of Carter and Ford, they were just too "ordinary folk" to use the middle name.

19. I am so sick of the faux naivete about this. Let's not be coy....
The right (and a few of Hillary's folks) use the middle name to conjure this:

And it's disgusting. It's not about being proud of or ashamed of the name, it's not about embracing the ethnic origin of the name. It's about conjuring up a bad, old boogeyman.

24. Right. But it's a common name. A lot of people have it.
Not quite as common as Ali or Mohammed, but still common. I'm in S.E. Michigan, where there are many folks from the middle east, and many more second- and third-generation Americans with middle-east ancestors.

Seriously, the dude's coloured/of ethnic decent/Black/whatever PC term you want to use. DEAL WITH IT!! He is who he is who he is. And if the **********'s weren't destroying the democratic process by rigging the election (by the way, Democrats ain't winning, no matter how many y'alls turn out - Diebold ain't counting your votes!), I think a Black candidate with a middle name that resembles that of a dictator the USA instated in the middle east during the 80's would be something that the world might be proud of.

The Repubs can rig things "a little" and get away with it. We need to win by a lot, so there's no point in them trying.

25. My Golden Rule of names
It's really freaking simple.

I call a person by the name that they refer to themselves as.

If someone introduces themselves to me as "Michael", I do not call them "Mike".

My dad has a truly messed up given name - it was a family name passed down for generations, but was so 'old fashioned' that it was basically a joke. His entire life he has either gone by his initials or by his middle name. I have never heard him referred to by his first name.

I extend Barack Obama the exact same courtesy.
