Hillary Clinton Staff: Don't Fight On In Vain
By Tim Shipman in San Antonio, Texas
Last Updated: 12:31am GMT 02/03/2008

<snip>

A growing number of Hillary Clinton's aides want her to abandon her White House bid if she loses both the Texas and Ohio primary elections on Tuesday. Younger members of her campaign team fear she will damage the Democratic Party, as well as her own reputation, if she fights on in vain to deny Barack Obama the presidential nomination.

Most observers believe Tuesday's elections, which include the smaller states of Vermont and Rhode Island, could deliver a death blow to Mrs Clinton's candidacy unless she wins Texas and Ohio convincingly. Mrs Clinton has a total of 1,279 delegates, trailing Mr Obama who has 1,389. Each needs at least 2,025 to win the nomination at the Democratic Party's convention in August.

Polls show Mr Obama is narrowly ahead in Texas, while Mrs Clinton's lead in Ohio has dwindled to a handful of points. Mr Obama is expected to win easily in Vermont, with Mrs Clinton taking Rhode Island. Mr Obama is expected to beat her in most of the 12 primaries that will remain.

The sense a decisive moment is approaching was heightened on Friday night as both candidates held rallies in San Antonio, home of the last stand at the Alamo. Mrs Clinton played to a crowd of 4,000 but Mr Obama packed a 20,000-seater stadium.

A Democrat strategist who has discussed the campaign with Clinton staff told The Sunday Telegraph: "The younger campaign aides are looking at how to bring this to a dignified end. People are prepared to go to her and say this thing is over. They fear a divisive contest that opens the door for the Republicans and makes it impossible for Hillary ever to run again. But the only one who can tell her to quit is Bill."

Mr Clinton has publicly voiced his fear her White House aspirations will suffer a fatal blow unless she wins both Texas and Ohio. The younger aides believe only Mr Clinton has the influence to convince her the game is up, since many of her most senior staff are in a state of "denial" about her prospects. They fear if the decision does not come from within her camp, she could be publicly shamed into standing down by senior party figures coming out for Mr Obama.

In campaign stops through Ohio and Texas last week, Mrs Clinton seemed tired yet determined. However, in a series of conference calls with reporters, her senior aides, Terry McAuliffe, Harold Ickes, Howard Wolfson and Maggie Williams were almost manic in their intensity as they sought to deny reports of low morale and to insist that Mrs Clinton is not beaten yet.

On Friday, her most senior advisers began to use a different strategy, attempting to paint Mr Obama as a choker who cannot "close the deal" unless he wins all four states that vote on Tuesday. Mrs Clinton's adviser Doug Hattaway told The Sunday Telegraph she would fight on, describing the election as "a long and winding road that will continue past March 4".

The Democrat strategist said: "The guys at the top table are grasping at any straw they can. They want to fight all the way to the convention, and they will die in a ditch with her."

4. I think it is unlikely she loses both states.
And she will have no problem doing the Huckabee even if it hurts us in the general election.

5. One of the best results of Hillary's failed candidacy would be....

No more influence in the party for guys like Terry McAuliffe, Harold Ickes, and James Carville.

Those three bozos need to be put out to pasture. Terry McAuliffe was the worst DNC head in our party's history. The difference between him and Howard Dean has been night and day.

Harold Ickes is a slimy politico who is completely over-rated.

James Carville jumped the shark more than a decade ago. Paul Begala is damn near there as well.

7. She really needs to bow out.
If she keeps going after Mar. 4th, keeps throwing out negative ads, mudslinging, keeps distracting Obama from defending himself from the Republicans, she WILL damage the Democratic Party.

This is unacceptable. We've been fighting this primary battle for weeks too long already. McCain already has his nomination sealed up. While we're continuing to fling poo at each other, McCain's positioning himself for November.

I frankly don't care how many egos I bruise or how many tears are shed. We have to look to November.

Hillary needs to bow out. Quickly.

how pathetic must it be to know that the only way Hillary can win is by something unexpected and terrible happening to Obama. That is truly sad and you're sitting around praying for it.

Sad as it is, Hillary will continue on until the nomination is pryed out of her hands with a crowbar. The Democratic Party won't matter to her.

19. All these unknown aides of HRC coming forward right here on
the weekend before the texas and ohio, Rhode Island and Vermont vote.....Sounds to me like someone is running damn scared come Tuesday.....Maybe obama sees the handwriting already for Tuesday and knows the further this campaign goes teh more people will take that second look at him and agree what we HRC supporters already know.....a coin in an empty suit makes a lot of noise and folks are having buyers remorse and obama will be sucking the hind teat....

You aren't paying attention. In the last eight weeks Hillary has LOST half the delegates and over half the popular vote to a guy who no one knew a year ago.

That's who I want for a president!!! She has a Mandate!!

24. wow....
It's starting to come in waves.

I do feel sorry for her though, I think she has got some extremely bad advice. It didn't help to have the media portray her as the inevitable one for almost a year only to have it slip away from her when the voters went to the polls.

I do hope she gets out soon, if she doesn't win Both Tx and Oh, because she will enevitably tarnish her career further, and the democratic party if the nomination is not won fairly.

SCREW her campaign management! They suck!

26. Interesting quote:
"Senator Clinton calls. President Clinton calls, former colleagues in the Cabinet of mine, their friends, contributor, donors. Obama: it's just him. He picks up the phone. He calls himself."

From Bill Richardson, in the article.
