3. TO be a "hero: one must do something courageous..
I see absolutely no courage in Clinton's recent past (I can't speak for 20 years ago), but since she has been in the public spot light, I see no acts of political courage.

To be fair, I don't see any such acts from Obama either, but I don't see acts of political cowardace from Obama, so that gives him a leg up, but I wouldn't call him a hero either.

Edited on Sun Mar-02-08 01:31 PM by the dogfish
She has to deal with the crap from the right plus the crap from those in her own party, all because she's doing the same things every other presidential candidate has done to varying degrees.

She's a hero just for having the fortitude to put up with the shrill, ridiculous and embarrassing hostility of so many here and on the right. And lately I don't see a lot of distinction between those 2 groups.

Democrats. We do not need heroes, we need people able to lead in the right direction.

It has often been a big weakness of the democrats to want their hero and to forget candidates are only human, then, when they show their weaknesses, to discard them. It is not a strength of the party. It is a weakness. Better somebody who fails and learns than somebody who does not learn. Obama has made mistakes in his life and learned from them. Did Hillary Clinton do the same is the real issue and her difficulty recognizing her mistakes is a real issue for me (reminds me too much of Bush).

16. Neither Hillary nor BO are heroes in the proper use of the word. McCain is a hero for his deeds
while a POW but IMO his performance as a politician are not worthy of respect much less veneration.
A person noted for feats of courage or nobility of purpose, especially one who has risked or sacrificed his or her life.

A person noted for special achievement in a particular field.

This is exactly how I see her POV on holding political office:

"...You see, I really believe that Senator Clinton understands one thing...that SHE IS MY PUBLIC SERVANT and her 1st and foremost duty is to her constituents...ME...that we are the reasons she has a job..."

Thanks for pointing to it!

Edited on Sun Mar-02-08 01:42 PM by MaineDem
She is taking a major step for women by being the first of her gender to become so close to nomination by a major party for the Presidency. In this regard, she is a leader, a trail-blazer, a role model, and to some extent, a hero.

Like her or not, support her or not, she's doing something historical. Which, by the way, can also be said of her opponent.

30. Here's why I say Hillary is no hero . . .
A hero is someone who does heroic acts and doesn't speak about them - they let others tell the tale. Hillary's boasting about spirial landings, dodging bullets, etc. while she goes around saving the world is starting to grate.

Hillary has done a lot of what "good works," there's no doubt about that and she is to be commended. It would be nice, however, if Hillary showed just a little humility, as Obama is prone to do.

Now if Hillary would bow out of the race gracefully, I'd give her heroic kudos for that, but dont' count on it happening.

38. No. She's a Senator from New York, and a pretty good one, and she's going to remain a pretty good
one after the primary is over and Senator Obama is our nominee. She is also a trail-blazer in many important ways. But she's not a "hero" in any legitimate sense of the word.

Edited on Mon Mar-03-08 12:01 AM by dmesg
A fairly competent back-bench legislator who apparently thinks significantly more highly of herself than a lot of the country does. I'm surprised anyone would call her a "hero", though.

The only remotely heroic person running is McCain, though I guess some of Edward's lawyering could be called heroic.

Wyoming contest or by how much she wins or loses this or that state.

She's in the history textbooks now and high school students from this point forward will benefit from the historical example.

Public service is a brave thing.
