Clinton launches Ohio campaign marathon

By MIKE GLOVER, Associated Press Writer Mon Mar 3, 1:05 AM ET

WESTERVILLE, Ohio - Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton argued Sunday that her campaign is "about solutions," not feelings, as she swept through Ohio on an intense push two days before the state's presidential primary.
………..

"For some people this election is about how you feel, it's about speeches," Clinton said. "Well, that's not what it's about for me. It's about solutions."

The former first lady opened an Ohio campaign marathon, sweeping across the state on a series of appearances lasting until the wee hours of Monday. Her first stop, in suburban Columbus, was aimed at firing up canvassers who were manning phone banks and knocking doors for her.

"Ohio is once again the center of attention, for a reason," Clinton said. "It truly does represent America, the hopes and aspirations, the challenges and opportunities, they are all right here in Ohio. It is a picture of America."

……………

"I think we've been sharpening the contrast and I think it's a contrast that needs to be sharpened," Clinton said. "This is a big decision and I want people to have as much information as possible."

She rejected suggestions the protracted contest would hurt the party in the fall election.

"I think the fact that it is contested and so close is great actually, great for the party and great for the country. Hard-fought primary contests are part of American politics."

…….

On the campaign trail, Clinton focused on her promise to provide health insurance for all, as well as her opposition to trade agreements that she said have drained thousands of jobs from the nation's industrial heartland, including Ohio.

"It's time we looked around and saw what's going on in the rest of Ohio," she said. "We cannot go on like this. It's morally wrong and economically stupid."

Clinton sharpened her focus, both on the industrial economy and Obama, during a stop in Youngstown, one of the hardest-hit cities in the Rust Belt, by hammering trade deals like the North American Free Trade Agreement with the United States, Canada and Mexico. That deal was signed by her husband when he was president, but it would be hard to tell that from her rhetoric.
………..
Clinton said she's the "only candidate" left who has a plan for universal health care, and throughout the swing she sought to contrast her record with Obama's rhetorical flourishes.

"I'm not interested in just talking, I'm interested in action," she said.

Also in Youngstown, her campaign added a sporting note as she collected the endorsement of middleweight boxing champion Kelly "The Ghost" Pavlik, a native of the city. "Hillary Clinton is my kind of fighter," Pavlik said, playing into her campaign theme of being a scrappy competitor.

At a rally in Akron, Clinton vowed to carry through on her campaign promises. …………

After a trip to Toledo on Monday, Clinton was returning to Texas late Monday for rallies in Beaumont and Austin. She also planned a televised town hall to be broadcast statewide in Texas on Monday night. Aides said she would await Tuesday's election returns in Ohio.

Obama slams Clinton on homestrech

By TOM RAUM, Associated Press Writer Sun Mar 2, 9:03 PM ET

WESTERVILLE, Ohio - Democrat Barack Obama worked to fend off an intensified attack on his foreign policy credentials from rival Hillary Rodham Clinton on Sunday as their paths crossed two days ahead of a potentially race-ending showdown in Ohio and Texas.
……..

Unlike Clinton, who has been barnstorming Ohio, Obama had only two events in the state on Sunday and was spending the night in hometown Chicago. He heads to Texas on Monday for a final day of campaigning before awaiting returns on Tuesday in San Antonio.

His aides said privately that they felt they had a good shot at a win in Texas, but were less certain about Ohio, where they braced for a possible loss.

1. Sounds to me like she's punting Texas if she's gonna be in Ohio all the time
Maybe she should spend the rest of her time in Rhode Island because, after all, as Rhode Island goes, so goes the nation.

Vermont Woman Newspaper Endorses Hillary for President

Vermont Woman Newspaper, an award-winning publication with over 50,000 readers across the Green Mountain State, has endorsed Hillary for President.

In the endorsement, editors call Hillary the "best qualified candidate to become the next President of the United States," and cite her "deep knowledge of every complex issue facing this nation - coupled with a command of policy and solutions," among the reasons for their decision.

Click here to read the endorsement.

The full text of the endorsement follows.

HILLARY CLINTON: OUR PRIMARY CHOICE

The overwhelming power of the inspirational rhetoric and thin resume of Senator Barack Obama - versus the candidate with clearly-defined experience, deep knowledge of every complex issue facing this nation - coupled with a command of policy and solutions; the person who also has the best chance of actually working with Congress to get results... there is no question:

We believe Hillary Clinton is the best qualified candidate to become the next President of the United States.

At this time in our history, following the hideous eight years of the Bush Administration, our country is a mess. It seems everyone is upset or depressed and even frightened at the direction of our once great country. No wonder change is such a compelling point word of everyone's campaign.

Change is coming no matter who is elected.

We asked the hard question: Change... to What?

And we found that the most substantive answers have been carefully considered and articulated by Senator Hillary Clinton.

Change is needed now in our energy and environmental policies, to address the health care crisis, stem the soaring rise in oil and gas prices, the greed of corporations, the instability in the Middle East, disease and poverty in Africa... to name just a few. There is so much that must be done just to begin to right our tilting ship, and at the same time to protect our country, end the war in Iraq, and pay down our massive debt owned mostly by China, and grow our own economy.

And these issues are critical. All of them. And they will need to be addressed immediately by the next president.

The presidency of the United States is not a training ground for inspiring speechmakers. It is the most important job in the world - and our country and our children are counting on us to make the right choice.

We urge you to read Hillary Clinton's positions on all the issues that concern you on her Web site. Take the time to do this no matter who you are planning on voting for. You owe it to yourself.

We believe that experience and inspiring leadership are absolutely essential: and we believe Hillary has plenty of both.

And by the way. We think it's quite an inspiration to have the first woman ever come this close to winning the top job in the country.

Barack Obama argues that he deserves the Democratic nomination and Hillary Clinton doesn't because he possesses superior "judgment," as he calls it, on the key issues we face as a nation. As definitive proof he offers one speech he made in 2002 during a reelection campaign for an Illinois senate seat in the most liberal district in the state, so liberal that no other position would have been viable. When he made that speech, Obama was not privy to the briefings by, among others, Secretary of State Colin Powell, in support of the Authorization of Use of Military Force as a diplomatic tool to push the international community to impose intrusive inspections on Saddam Hussein.

Would Obama have acted differently had he been in Washington or had he had the benefit of the arguments and the intelligence that the administration was offering to the Congress debating that resolution? During the 2002-2003 timeframe, he was a minor local official uninvolved in the national debate on the war so we can only judge from his own statements prior to the 2008 campaign. Obama repeated these points in a whole host of interviews prior to announcing his candidacy. On July 27, 2004, he told the Chicago Tribune on Iraq: "There's not much of a difference between my position and George Bush's position at this stage." In his book, The Audacity of Hope, published in 2006, he wrote, "...on the merits I didn't consider the case against war to be cut-and- dried." And, in 2006, he clearly said, "I'm always careful to say that I was not in the Senate, so perhaps the reason I thought it was such a bad idea was that I didn't have the benefit of US intelligence. And for those who did, it might have led to a different set of choices."

I was involved in that debate in every step of the effort to prevent this senseless war and I profoundly resent Obama's distortion of George Bush's folly into Hillary Clinton's responsibility. I was in the middle of the debate in Washington. Obama wasn't there. I remember what was said and done. In fact, the administration lied in order to secure support for its war of choice, including cooking the intelligence and misleading Congress about the intent of the authorization. Senator Clinton's position, stated in her floor speech, was in favor of allowing the United Nations weapons inspectors to complete their mission and to build a broad international coalition. Bush rejected her path. It was his war of choice.

There is no credible reason to conclude that Obama would have acted any differently in voting for the authorization had he been in the Senate at that time. Indeed, he has said as much. The supposed intuitive judgment he exercised in his 2002 speech was nothing more than the pander of a local election campaign, just as his current assertions of superior judgment and scurrilous attacks on Hillary Clinton are a pander to those who now retroactively think the war was a mistake without bothering to acknowledge Senator Clinton's actual position at the time and instead fantasizing that she was nothing but a Bush clone. Obama willfully encourages and plays off this falsehood.

If its good enough for Yahoo! and Huffington Post, and for a hero of Dems for 9-11, its good enough for DU.

"Michelle knows the same simple truth that all women know: when it comes to getting work done and cleaning up messes, women are better than men.

This is part of the reason of why Hillary Clinton is the better candidate in '08. Aside from the fact that she has more experience; she is a woman. It's time we recognize what a strength that is in a Commander in Chief.

Hillary is smarter, more capable, a harder worker, better multi-tasker, and most importantly, tougher than Barack.

Let's employ the "foxhole rule." Imagine yourself in the heat of war. Bombs dropping everywhere. You're dug in. You've got limited ammo. All hell is breaking loose. Who would you rather have getting your back? Barack or Hillary?

Hands down, I would personally choose Hillary because she would fight to the death. She would get the job done. She is one tough, smart cookie. In essence it's the difference between "can" and "will."

4858229, Clinton: Obama gave the "the old wink-wink" to Canadian officials regarding NAFTA
Posted by sabra on Mon Mar-03-08 10:15 AM

http://www.swamppolitics.com/news/politics/blog/2008/03/clinton_obama_gave_canada_wink.html

TOLEDO, OH -- Hillary Clinton -- fighting to hold a slim lead in Ohio -- is seizing on a leaked memo indicating that a top Barack Obama adviser assured Canadian officials the candidate's attacks on NAFTA were motivated by primary politics.

The former first lady -- ratcheting up her battle with the press -- suggested the Canada story would be getting more attention if the memo had referred to her campaign's activities.

Speaking to reporters here this morning, Clinton said, "If you come to Ohio and you go give speeches that are very critical of NAFTA... and then we find out that your chief economic adviser has gone to a foreign government and basically done the old wink-wink – 'Don’t pay any attention, this is just political rhetoric' -- I think that raises serious questions."

Peering at the 50 or so reporters packed into a small hotel conference room here, she added: "I would ask you to look at this story and substitute my name for Sen. Obama’s name and see what you would do with this story… Just ask yourself (what you would do) if some of my advisers had been having private meetings with foreign governments."

The memo, written by a Canadian embassy official and leaked to the AP, claims that the campaign's top economic adviser Austan Goolsbee assured him that Obama's anti-NAFTA remarks "should not be taken out of context and should be viewed as more about political positioning than a clear articulation of policy plans."

Goolsbee has denied that he made the comments attributed to him.

Harper meddling in U.S. primaries, Democrats say

Two years after U.S. Ambassador David Wilkins was accused of meddling in Canada's federal election, the same is being said of Stephen Harper's Conservatives with respect to the current U.S. contest.

Democrats appearing on a nationwide U.S. political program accused the Harper government yesterday of interfering in the primary campaigns to help the Republican Party candidate in the coming campaign.

"You've got a right-wing government in Canada that is trying to help the Republicans and is out there actively interfering in this campaign," Bob Shrum told the popular program, Meet the Press. Mr. Shrum is a top-level Democrat adviser who has had key roles in the presidential campaigns of Al Gore and John Kerry.

At issue are reports that members of Mr. Harper's prime ministerial office leaked word last week that a member of Barack Obama's campaign told a Canadian diplomat that Mr. Obama was not serious when he raised the possibility of renegotiating the free-trade agreement.

That statement has become fodder for Mr. Obama's opponents, who have accused the Illinois senator of saying one thing to win votes in hard-pressed states such as Ohio, and another to keep the peace with the Canadian government

In the last couple of days I have sensed a bit of momentum towards Hillary and even some national pudits seem to agree.

I think more and more folks are coming off the Obama bandwagon and looking into substance instead of emotional feel-good rah rah.

Also, I think more people realize that Hillary would be tougher for McCain to beat.

Poll: Hillary's Lead In Ohio Grows To 10 Points
By Greg Sargent - March 3, 2008, 12:35PM

The new SurveyUSA poll finds that Hillary has successfully stopped -- and reversed -- Obama's momentum in Ohio.

She leads him by 10 points -- 54%-44% -- a spread that's up from six points a week ago (though overall, it's down from the 17-point lead she held three weeks ago).

One potentially key finding from the survey: She leads him by 13% among the early voting. If this is correct, the pollsters say, Obama would need to carry Primary Day precinct voters 52% to 48% if he is to win Ohio.

Hillary has also expanded her Ohio lead in polls from Rasmussen and Public Policy Polling (D), while slipping in Quinnipiac and Zogby. On the whole, her lead appears to have gone up.
