To My Fellow Obama Supporters: A Note From Ohio
Edited on Mon Mar-03-08 02:48 PM by VolcanoJen
Greetings and salutations to all of you have committed your time, your devotion, your money and your hearts to the most unique, most uplifting, most positive Democratic Campaign for President that most of us have ever seen... Obama For America.

After 11 straight wins and a huge lead in delegates, I know everyone is hoping we can keep this trend alive in Texas and Ohio. I know that our friends in Texas are working their butts off, and I can assure you that here in Ohio, we're doing the same.

Here are a few things that the polls just don't reflect that I hope everyone will take into account as they watch the returns Tuesday night:

- Here in Ohio, we embarked on an historic effort over the weekend: the largest Get Out The Vote canvassing operation every assembled. Together, volunteers across the state participated in the One Million For Change canvassing campaign. Men and women, young and old, political activists and newbies, and people from every walk of life took to the streets and to the homes of our neighbors to encourage them to give their vote to Barack Obama on Tuesday. It was the most incredible political event I have ever participated in. I can guarantee you that no such ground effort was underway this weekend in southwestern Ohio from the Clinton campaign.

- Not only does the Obama campaign rule the ground in Ohio, they rule the airwaves. It doesn't matter if you're watching American Idol, Meet The Press, Jericho or Big Brother, you're going to see three to four Obama ads (and zero Clinton ads) within that hour. And it's been that way for two solid weeks now. Every ad is positive and persuasive, youthful and upbeat. The only Clinton ad I've seen is that "Obama will allow your children to die in their beds while he has the phone ringer on 'silent'" crap when it is played ad nauseum on the cable political shows and Sunday talk programs. I honestly do not see her on television or hear her on the radio, while Obama is just everywhere. Oh, including in two full-page Cincinnati Enquirer ads in the past week!

- The major Ohio newspapers are behind Obama. The Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Toledo Blade, The Canton Repository, The Dayton Daily News, the Cincinnati Enquirer. Not sure if the Columbus Dispatch has endorsed yet. I understand some paper down in Zanesville and another in Akron are big on Clinton, though. ;-)

- Obama wins the sign wars! You might see a few Hillary signs on public corners, but in front of houses, Obama has the clear "loud and proud" advantage.

- Obama wins the visibility wars! Every Friday and Monday for three weeks now, during rush hour, you'll see dozens of Obama supporters at enthusiastic "Honk-and-Wave" events across this area. On the way to Obama HQ yesterday (Sunday), I drove by the largest one I'd seen yet... over 100 people spread across all four corners of one of Cincinnati's busiest intersections. There was so much honking and jumping up and down that I had tears in my eyes.

- Ohio has A LOT of college students. I mean, A LOT. And of the major universities, only the University of Toledo is on Spring Break this week. ;-)

- Supporters from across the country are phonebanking Ohio in a massive effort that began in earnest last Wednesday and continues through 7:15 pm on Tuesday. OH and I forgot to mention the busloads of Chicago volunteers that flooded Cincinnati on Saturday... including our own DUer, mopinko! It was SO fun canvassing with them!

In closing, don't forget that just a few weeks ago, Hillary Clinton was leading Ohio by double-digits. We're closing this thing fast, and if we had another week, I'd be more confident in saying we'd win comfortably tomorrow. We may be victorious tomorrow, we may not... but it won't be because we didn't pour our hearts and souls into it in this state. We gave it everything we had, and then got up the next day and gave more. Please remember our effort as the returns come in. And no matter what... we're confident when the votes are counted, at the very least we will have drawn to a de facto delegate tie with Clinton coming out of Ohio while closing a twenty-point gap in a matter of days. The Clinton campaign will not take from Ohio what they had hoped to just a few weeks ago.

There is something happening in America, and it's too important and meaningful to show up in some poll. You hear it in voices. You see it on faces. You feel it in hearts.

So, my Obama friends, think happy thoughts tonight and tomorrow, and log on to MyBarackObama.com and give the Buckeye State a ring!

Yes, We Can, Ohio! Yes, We Can, Texas! Yes, We Can, Rhode Island! Yes, We Can, Vermont!

All of my love and support,
Jennifer in Cincinnati

11. COOL- But for Hillary Remember
that close only counts in Horse shoes, hand grenades, and high explosives.

She need a blow out the baseball equivalent of 15-0, and there is not way that happens.

The best she can do IMHO is break even in delegates and eke out a small (less then 5%) win.

Will not be enough to stop Barack.

If she continues to campaign after Ohio she will see a backlash develop against her and her campaign tactics.

34. Exactly.
I practically had to force myself to write my post, just to buck myself up. I keep forgetting that the math for her from here on out just isn't going to work, if we can pull it as close in Ohio as I think we will tomorrow night. :-)

13. The weather will present a special challenge
Whatever your preference in candidates, don't assume someone else will be making up for your vote.

Get yourself, carefully as the need may be, to you polling place and make you mark.

If you can, face the travail of the weather with a friend or neighbor.

Big Democratic turn-outs REALLY discourage the R's and they deserve it.

39. Regardless of the scare Ohio weather warnings...
... if it's going to be over 30 degrees, I think we can handle it. :-)

Our GOTV-Polls effort tomorrow will be HISTORIC. I'm on Senior Outreach in the morning so I'll be personally escorting our older Obama voters to the polls, and I can't wait. I was so touched yesterday when I met an elderly African American man who had tears in his eyes as he held my hand and told me, "I have never been so excited in my life."

In his life! Can you imagine... :-)

Edited on Mon Mar-03-08 10:39 PM by VolcanoJen
It was worth a seperate post, honestly.

So, I walked into the Woodlawn (Cincinnati satellite) office to a buzzing beehive. I joined the line waiting to talk to the college kid with the computer to check in. It seemed natural, if not entirely orderly. :-)

Right in front of me is Will. He's in a wheelchair. Elderly, I'd guess late 70's. I'm looking around the room and just beaming and kind of shaking with excitement.

He starts the conversation.

"You sure do look excited!! You're excited, aren't you?"

"Fired up!" I shouted back at him. He let out a hearty laugh. I introduced myself. He told me his name is Will.

"You know, Jennifer you are a young thing." I swear to God, he's flirting with me.

"Looks are deceiving, my new and good friend. It's all in the skin care."

He laughs again. God, I will remember that beautiful laugh until the day I die.

"You know, Miss, I've never been more excited in my life," he said, and he took my hand in his as he told me.

"In your... life?"

"It feels real. It's never felt like this. It is exciting! I'm excited! Look at you! Look at these people! I never thought in a million years."

I laughed and I reached down and gave him the biggest bear hug.

"Fired up?" I queried.

"Ready to go!" And that gorgeous, infectious laugh, again.

I wanted to talk to him forever. His daughter arrived and swept him away. "Daddy is silly," she said to me.

"He's awesome," I said to her. Her smile betrayed her knowledge of how incredible her beautiful father is.

And with that, they grabbed their packets and took off. I stepped up in line and grabbed my assignment.

Will in Cincinnati....? Tuesday is for YOU.

189. Wonderful moment
Here's finger's crossed for Ohio to reward his excitement. And how fortunate of him to have run into you... judging by your posts here, as compared to the supporters of, um, another candidate, you're a shining example of something that's unfortunately a real change - excited and hopeful FOR a candidate, instead of against. I hope the rest of us can be inspired to emulate your example.

14. Nice post, Jennifer
Positive and upbeat. I talked to an Obama canvasser who came to my little condo community soliciting votes for Obama on Saturday. The exchange between us was brief, but enthusiastic. I told him I was voting for Obama and that he could save the campaign litertature for someone else. I live in Dayton, btw.

I was not an Obama supporter in the beginning. I started with Kucinich until he dropped out, then I switched to Edwards until he dropped out. Obama may not be my first choice, but I see him as our best chance to win the White House and also end the war in Iraq, which is very important to me.

It is so wonderful to see ordinary citizens participating in the political process. Thank you for your hard work and dedication. This Chicagoan wanted to be in Ohio, but Texas called first. I had a blast and I believe more than ever that something is going to change in this country.

It's also encouraging to see the money that we've donated being spent exactly where it needs to go.

47. Yep. But considering I was born and raised in Texas, it was just like returning home.
There were some very stressed out precinct captains who needed a  and some folk to help pick up the canvassing slack.

We spent most of the time calling up people from DNC procured lists to recruit as precinct captains/potential elected chairs. I had some great conversations with a couple of the people I called. It got funny after a while responding to democrats asking "but if you're for Obama, are you sure you want ME?" LOL. Bottom line is that we need people and FAIR ones at that. I found seven (four were Edwards supporters) who agreed to register for and attend the training session.

I have to say, I was very disappointed in some of the shenanigans perpetuated by the opposing camp. I don't know if they are trying to get caucus tallies overturned or what, but there is something that is, quite frankly, undemocratic with respect to some of the advice and rhetoric I heard from some of their supporters. A precinct chair is an ELECTED official. You can't just walk in and make yourself a precinct chair because Hillary says so.

29. hi jen!! so sorry i missed you!!
just wanted to chip in that 110 chicagoans, from kids to seniors, in every color of the rainbow, decended on cincy this weekend, and knocked on 10,000 doors. yes, 10,000. although a few of us ran into republicans, and a couple of glum hillary supporters, most of us saw an absolute tidal wave of joyful obamites. it was amazing.
there was the honk and wave by the jordan crossing staging area. at least 50-60 people, with the same rainbow spectrum, including 3 black cowboys with their horses. i don't know how those horses tolerated the honking, but their riders were about to break their faces with their smiles.

Damn, I'm sorry I missed that! :wow:

You Chicagoans really brought out the best in us this weekend, mopinko. I hooked up with a bunch of you good, good folk yesterday and it was so much fun, and so inspiring.

We were all in tears as we waved goodbye to the last bus that left from Woodlawn last night. Damn, you guys are the GREATEST!!

Thanks and you KNOW I look forward to your seperate, full report post!

 mopinko and the Chicago Obama Crew!

Edited on Mon Mar-03-08 04:18 PM by mopinko
we came from the northside, but they do a lot of work in lawndale. i wonder if they supplied those also.

so, a shout out to my new state senator heather and hubby leo, and their amazing kids who took care of buses and vans, hotel rooms, most of the food, some beer. their generosity opened a whole lot of those doors.

all i can say to them is :wow:

63. I have to say "WOW!" to that report, mopinko!
As a lifelong horsewoman -- and one who when younger actually rode my mounts into towns frequently -- I am absolutely delighted to imagine the impression those riders made on the street corners!

No doubt they knew they could handle their mounts even amidst the frequent honking and shouting, which also reveals them to be quite good caballeros. :) Folks who haven't spent much time around horses and riders close-up are usually overwhelmed by the beauty, size, and power of the mounts and the skill and strength of those on their backs.

VERY impressive, indeed! Just enhances the efforts of each and every person contributing their time and energy to such a good and important cause.

Would love to have seen the smiles on the faces, but my mental image will serve fairly well. :D

Thank you, too, for your excellent work! I'm so proud of all of you! :hi:

The polls can't give us a complete picture of what's happening in Ohio, but your post certainly did. Keep up the good work and know there are millions across the country who are pulling for Sen. Obama (and sitting excitedly on the edges of our seats hoping your state can help wrap this primary season up!).

there is truly something amazing going on. A new era of leadership is hopefully sweeping in. Belief. Action. Faith.

I love the adapted yard signs for Ohio, which contain an Ohio symbol. More important, it says "Vote March 4." (the action step).

and stick them where the sun don't shine. Obama will do better than that in Ohio and Texas. Remember it's not fatal for Obama to lose both but it is for Hillary. This was a nice uplifting positive post until you came.

p.s.
Obama has always done better than the polls indicate. Why? because as this post describes his ground game.

53. I've always liked you Jen. This OP is a good example of why.
And as others are saying, rightly: THANK YOU (and all those doing the same) for putting your efforts wholeheartedly into the necessary groundwork!

I have been able to keep my enthusiasm steadfastly on an even keel so far and am glad of it. Having expectations that are absurdly high can often lead to equally intense lows if we get TOO carried away. Many of us probably are expecting entirely too much of what can be done by any one man to repair such grievous harm that's been done and fulfill the promise of renewal.

But the last few weeks have nonetheless raised my hopes quite a lot and encouraged me more than I would have ever expected regarding the future of my country and my fellow citizens. Knowing the entire world could benefit hugely isn't something to sneeze at, either!

And one thing that does more than anything else about the phenomenon that the Obama campaign has become is that, given the clearly visible magnitude and power of this "movement," it seems to me it would be difficult indeed for anyone who wishes to represent us to ignore it or to believe that Americans continue to be willing victims of our own government.

I can only hope now that the "we" of "Yes we can!" and "We are the ones we've been waiting for!" understand that OUR work is not done if/when our man takes the oath of office. The involvement must continue forward if we are to meet our potential!

Reading about the efforts of folks like you convinces me that this IS well understood. I'm too old, decrepit, and poor to contribute much that requires great vigor and money to spare. But my mouth still works fine, and I am using my little bit of influence generously to enhance and persuade wherever I possibly can.

I think some of us may underestimate the effect our sincere words can have upon friends, family members, and even strangers. Rarely, if ever, have I witnessed such an opportunity for even "the little guys" to have strong voices, too!

Thanks again for using your own voice to the max, Jen!

K&R!

62. Oh vicki!!!

One thing I'm not certain people fully realize is that when millions of voices are calling for change, millions of voices will demand change and hold feet to fire once we've accomplished the initial task of getting the man elected.

He knows that, very clearly. As far as I'm concerned, this is only Phase One. :-)

Thank you for your kind and lovely note. Something really is happening in America. After November 2004, I never thought I'd feel this way about my country again, so soon. It's such a.... moment. An historic moment.

DU's Hillary activists create an illusion of support, and the cable news nets, particularly CNN and FOX, create the illusion that the contests are closer than they are.

Wins coming for Obama, unless there is serious vote stealing and tampering in Ohio. She's got no chance of winning Texas.

anything. Bus stops are a great place to just hang out, or go from stop to stop. They are only a few blocks apart. For Hackett I targeted a bus stop that served the neighborhoods in his district and just stayed there. For statewiode elections I move around a lot. This is something you can do on your lunch break in urban cities.

The funny thing about the Hackett bus stop was it was right across the street from Dem headquarters in Cincy when they were on Main. I was like, dems look out the window. Hackett voters are standing here and every ten minutes or so a new batch arrives.

I also like barber shops.

125. I just ran into Paul a few days ago, walking with purpose near 5th and Vine
I'll always point back to that moment in the summer of 2005 as one of Cincy's proudest. We came thisclose to electing an anti-war veteran Democrat to Congress... it was the beginning of Bush's "annus horribilis" that would peak with Cindy Sheehan's summer vigil in Crawford and of course, the horrible hurricane and tragedy that was Katrina.

Barber and Beauty Shops are the best, and people love to stop-and-chat there! Shoe shine stands, as well. And the great hotel lobbys downtown. :-)

Rosebud, let's have lunch!! I'm downtown Monday through Friday!

111. Wow, now I'm more confident than EVER in Ohio...
Edited on Mon Mar-03-08 09:13 PM by TwoSparkles
I'm in Iowa, and I literally went through what you are going through now.

You worked harder than I did. I was an Obama precinct captain, but I had
the opportunity to do some calling, and be among so many optimistic and amazing
Obama volunteers. Like you said--all ages! It's so wonderful to see twenty-somethings
working together with senior citizens.

Those honk-and-wave events sound so fun! What a great idea.

It's interesting to hear your story, because I sense that the Obama movement
has grown in intensity and numbers since Iowa. That gives me so much hope for
Ohio. As you know, Obama won in Iowa. However, two nights before our caucus,
Obama, Hillary and Edwards were running neck-and-neck. It was really tight.

However, in the end--it was because of: New voters, last-minute-deciders who
broke for Obama and the support garnered by the enthusiasm generated by the
Iowa ground game. Your description of what is happening in Ohio means that
so many voter are being impacted and persuaded by the visibility of the movement,
and the countless people that you talk with on the phone and on their porches.

No doubt, your "report on the ground" showcases the growth of Obama support
and enthusiasm--and I predict Ohio will play a lot like Iowa--and even better, due
to growth that has accumulated during the past several weeks.

Jen, thanks for all of your hard work and for your amazing report. Please know
that your efforts will pay off in spades. The ground game carried Obama over
in Iowa (and helped him immensely in other states too), but you've got more energy, more people
and the Obama team has grown exponentially since Iowa.

There's no doubt in my mind now, that Obama will win Ohio, and most likely
win by double digits. I saw his ground game, up close--and it is unparalleled.
Now, it seems to be evolving into something even bigger--and that translates very
well at the voting booth! :)

Awesome Jen!! :)

If it were not for your efforts in Iowa, TwoSparkles, I'm not sure I would have really believed.

I will never forget the night of the Iowa caucuses. Obama's speech moved so many of us to action. YOU ARE THE ONES WHO MADE IT HAPPEN.

If we somehow pull this off, if Obama somehow wins the nomination, this country will always look to Iowa as where it began... where it started... where a lily-white midwestern state made believers out of all of us.

This is as much yours as it is ours... Thank You, Iowa!!

 TwoSparkles

I printed out this photo, taken at Obama's speech in Iowa the night of the victory, and it has been at my side and pumping me up ever since that historic January night. It will always be Iowa. That was the moment. Look at the joy!

"We know the battle ahead will be long, but always remember that no matter what obstacles stand in our way, nothing can withstand the power of millions of voices calling for change.

We have been told we cannot do this by a chorus of cynics who will only grow louder and more dissonant in the weeks to come. We’ve been asked to pause for a reality check. We’ve been warned against offering the people of this nation false hope.

But in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope. For when we have faced down impossible odds; when we’ve been told that we’re not ready, or that we shouldn’t try, or that we can’t, generations of Americans have responded with a simple creed that sums up the spirit of a people.

Yes we can."

Conversely - and I think it's odd, btw - I haven't seen hide nor hair of the Clinton campaign, not a single flyer, nothing. Weird. And Euclid is the perfect neighborhood for a Clinton push - blue collar, 60%-40% white, fairly conservative Democrats, terrible unemployment, no funding for schools - the perfect storm for her, so the pundits would say. Don't get it.

182. It's so much more complicated than that.
First of all, Ohio is moving in the right direction. In 2000, Bush beat Gore in Ohio 50% to 46%, by a margin of 176,426 votes.

In 2004, Bush "beat" Kerry 51% to 49%, by a margin of 118,599 votes. And if you ask me, those votes were grabbed out of the Clermont County Board of Elections during their infamous "Terror Alert" lockdown on election night. The monkey business that went on across this state in 2004 is well-documented and far too depressing for me to recount here.

And you left off many states that also should have swung to Kerry in 2004... how about Iowa, Nevada, Missouri? Just because Ohio seems to be the tightest state chronologically every election night (they always seem to call our state last) does not mean it's our fault. I think your perception is really whack here.

If you really want to turn Ohio blue, MOVE HERE! What we need are more Democrats, my friend. The ones who are here in the state are busting our humps. We're doing our part more than just about every other swing state in America.

Thanks for your positive report. It is very important at this stage to stay focused and not let the MSM discourage us.
As Barack quite often said, 'It is very difficult to bring change'. The institutions will do everything in their power
to maintain the status quo. They will not easily give up their political strongholds on this society.
With regard to the polls, I have to say that polling is done the 'old fashioned' way. Samples are taken mostly from
voters using 'land-lines'. The bloggers/mobile users are ignored in these polls...

I am almost too old and beat and tired for this new crowd, remembering the days when this DU was just a little light in the gathering darkness...

Reading this thread, and many thanks to the OP, I hope everyone realizes how much this means. Thanks, everyone.

175. Hi Jen! Knowing you have been and are out there in Ohio makes me feel that Obama is going to win!!
:hi:

Reading your comments above and your blog gave me such a rush....I wish I was there with you tommorrow, although I am in spirit! Ohio ofcourse is a place that I spent time in 2004, including on Election eve at the rally in Cleveland with Kerry and then working at the polls in the Akron/Canton area the next day, only to see my heart broken at all of the election disenfranchisement in the icy rain that day and to then have my heart broken completely when Kerry conceded the next day on my way back to the Bay Area. My heart will be mended tommorrow from that pain if Ohio can bring a victory to Obama. With the energy you and others have been putting into it, I believe it will happen....

Sending you and all others lots of love and support!

Namaste

Pachamama

184. I am proud
No matter what happens as results come in, everyone who contributed time or money, the effort makes you winners. This candidate had no chance. He was against: the favored candidate, the white male candidate in lilly-white Iowa. The other candidates had been cultivating their apparatus in Iowa for years. Yet inspite of these challanges, the message resounded. Super tuesday, was the swan song, yet he carried 13 of the 22 states up for grabs. Not just him but we. We gave are damndest! we won a string of victories after that. Maybe if we are lucky we can take the wind from his opponents sails today. Maybe not. If nothing else we have fought our asses off and "said we are relevent!" "YES WE CAN!". So if there is anyone here who can do something in any of the contest states, THEN DO IT! DO IT NOW. GET OFF THE INTERNET AND DO ONE THING TO MAKE THIS CHANGE HAPPEN!" Then Maybe we can truly reclaim what is ours, Our country, Our Government, Our Election.

Whatever happens tonight, even if she eeks out a small victory, we're taking the delegates she was counting on, right out from under her.

194. Generation Jones member Obama to win Ohio
I believe Obama will actually take Ohio tonight, maybe both in delegates as well as with popular vote. As a member of Generation Jones (the heretofore lost generation between the Boomers and Xers), I am thrilled to see one of my generational compatriots finally in a position to take over the reins of leadership. As The New York Times and Newsweek have argued in recent weeks, Obama is not a Boomer nor an Xer, but is instead part of Generation Jones, and that matters in this election. Go Obama! Take the Buckeye State!

You guys, we made the difference in Ohio. A 21 point Clinton lead ERASED in three weeks.

A popular vote win in Ohio by Obama would be the icing, but it's not even necessary. We did it, we did it, we did it!!!

Spin a delegate tie in Ohio! Spin it, Clintonistas!

214. Why I Feel Great Tonight. Read this for a Lift!!!
My little story? That happened in Cincinnati.

As I type this, Clinton has claimed victory in Ohio, and Obama gave an uplifting concession speech in Texas.

And here in Cincinnati, with 63% of the vote counted, Obama is leading Clinton, 61% to 38%.

All Politics Are Local. I'm a happy gal tonight. Something happened in Cincinnati, that much is certain.

 Obama People!

Need a lift, my sweethearts? Read this. Read it again. Print it out. And then read it again in the morning.

Oh, Yes, We Still Can.

We know the battle ahead will be long, but always remember that no matter what obstacles stand in our way, nothing can withstand the power of millions of voices calling for change.

Yes we can.

Barack Obama, New Hampshire Concession Speech, January 2008
