A sober observation on our "discord" and their "cohesion" |
|
As we approach each new primary, I've noticed both the revving up feelings (positive and negative) on behalf of our two candidates, and countervaling lamentations about how we're "terring ourselves apart" while our Republican friends are rallying around John McCain, and how badly this bodes for our chances in November. To those who are fretting about this, let me take you back a scantn six weeks: The Republican race was fractured a half dozen different ways, and we were enjoying every minute of their turmoil:
John McCain - honored war hero and supporter of our Iraq campaign, or disloyal RINO who'd throw open the borders?
Rudy Giuliani - the hero of 9/11 or a pro-abortion, gay-loving, gun-grabbing cross-dresser?
Mike Huckabee - IRS-bashing darling of the social conservatives, or a tax-raising social liberal?
Mitt Romney - Pro-business fiscal conservative, or opportunistic flip-flopper?
Fred Thompson - "Reaganesque" statesman, or Gucci-wearing lazybones?
Ron Paul - Strict constitutional libertarian, or anti-war kook?
Somehow, the Republicans sorted out everyone but McCain, and have (somewhat begrudgingly) rallied around his campaign. We still have plenty of time, and most of actually like both of our choices. Let's not get overly stressed out about this.

1. The trouble is, we liked both of our candidates, but we don't anymore. |

I speak for myself only, but I will be deeply resentful if Hillary's scorched earth campaign gives her the nomination.
