(Zogby) Poll shows Daschle with Slim Lead (5.6 points over Thune)
Poll shows Daschle with slim lead

Associated Press

Seven months before the November general election, Democratic U.S. Sen. Tom Daschle holds a lead of 5.6 percentage points over Republican challenger John Thune, according to results of a new statewide poll.

Of the 501 likely voters polled, 48.2 percent said they supported Daschle, while 42.6 percent favored Thune. Nearly 8 percent were undecided and 1 percent said they did not support either candidate.

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percent. Daschle, a three-term incumbent, and Thune, a former three-term member of the U.S. House, will face each other in the general election on Nov. 2.

The poll was conducted March 27-28 by Zogby International, of Utica, N.Y. It commissioned by several South Dakota media outlets, including the Rapid City Journal, the Watertown Public Opinion, KOTA-TV of Rapid City and KSFY-TV of Sioux Falls.

2. I agree - Thune has a lot of name recognition -but I would feel
better if Daschle were over 50%. If Daschle would be demonstrating more leadership he would be over 50%, imo.

6. I hope he wins reelection, but afterwards he needs to step down
as the our Minority Leader.

7. Well, if he plays his cards right
Daschle will let Bill Frist take his seat as Minority Leader.

It all comes down to Florida, Colorado, Oklahoma, Alaska, South Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Lousiana, Illinois, South Dakota, North Carolina, and probably a few more I'm forgetting.

8. True
But I would much rather prefer a party leader being from a safe blue state. I understand Daschle is from a state that voted for Bush over Gore by some 20 points or so, but I want a democrat that has a spine for the leadership.

Hope he wins the seat -- but I don't want him as either maj. or min. leader.

5. Daschle would do better
If he just grew a spine instead of cow towing to Bush.
