WP: Nader Scrambles to Collect Thousands of Signatures
Nader Scrambles to Collect Thousands of Signatures

By Brian Faler
Special to The Washington Post
Saturday, April 3, 2004; Page A06

Ralph Nader would like your autograph.

In fact, he needs it. The longtime consumer advocate, who is running for president as an independent, must collect hundreds of thousands of signatures from voters across the country to get his name on state ballots for the Nov. 2 election.

It is a daunting task -- despite hand-wringing from Democrats that his campaign could affect the outcome of the presidential race -- that stands between Nader and his chances of becoming a significant factor in the election.

The requirement stems from state laws that were designed to prevent frivolous candidates from cluttering the ballots....

***

In all, Nader will need about 620,000 valid signatures to reach his goal of getting on the ballot in all 50 states, according to Richard Winger, editor of Ballot Access News and a leading authority on the topic. Nader will actually need many more than that, because scores of signatures will probably be disqualified for a variety of reasons. Winger said Nader needs to aim for about 900,000 signatures to clear the bar nationwide; the candidate has estimated that he will need 1.5 million....

1. Rove and the Republicans will make sure that
Nader gets enough signatures in most states, especially the states that matter. Count on it.

4. Talk about "lack of balls"
Nader's site is remarkably sketchy on details in plans and proposals, but then he doesn't need to spell out anything that could actually get passed and implemented because he doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of being in office.

It doesn't take any "balls" to complain about how things are and how they should be. If he had any "balls," he'd run for an office he could actually get elected into, and start doing the work himself instead of complaining that others aren't doing it well enough.

7. I've read and listened to what Nader has to say many times

I have no problem with most of his policies and ideals. My problem is that he care so little about his own progressive ideals that he his willing to sacrifice them all by acting as a spoiler.

And you don't think that Rove and company don't like the fact that Nader is running and will help him out as much as possible? Look at what they are are ready doing:

Before you call someone a liar maybe you better look at the facts.

9. Thinking Nader has the best interests of anyone in mind is
what's silly.
Nader is ready to help re-elect (or whatever you want to call it) Bush.
Pretending Kerry won't be better for the environment, won't have a better foreign policy, won't have a better economic agenda for working Americans is what's silly.

Actually it's horrific.

6. 1.5 million is more than half the votes he got in 2000
and how many of those would vote for him or put him on the ballot again? He fails. I hope Democratic Sec of States look over every sig with a fine-toothed comb and throw out every single one that has the slightest bit wrong with it. Stop him from getting on the ballot at all costs. Nader must be stopped, he is just as much the enemy as Rove.

8. Why doesn't he just get the signatures from all the non-voters?
Nader is constantly whining about how the Dems would get more votes from people who don't vote is they would only start fighting for the right policies. Since Nader is fighting for those policies, why aren't all those non-voters flocking to sign his petitions?

After all, he's the expert on getting votes!!

Edited on Sat Apr-03-04 05:00 PM by w4rma
It is my understanding that Ralph Nader supported that, also.

12. Nader did support the Davis Recall
AND

Green Party Candidate Peter Camejo even said that Ah nold was better than Davis.

I wonder how much money they took under the table and put in their Swiss bank accounts?

14. Camejo said that?
I'm convinced that these far left anti democrat groups are funded by the RWers. It's time for a real investigation.
