Hillary Clinton: Doing Everything She Can To Insult Any State That Won't Back Her
“I was shocked when I learned Iowa and Mississippi have never elected a woman governor, senator or member of Congress. There has got to be something at work here. How can Iowa be ranked with Mississippi? That’s not the quality. That’s not the communitarianism, that’s not the openness I see in Iowa.”

Obama Release on Clinton’s Mississippi Comments

Jackson, MS – Today, the Obama campaign in Mississippi held a press conference calling on Senator Hillary Clinton to explain derogatory statements made about Mississippi.

In October, Senator Hillary Clinton told the Des Moines Register newspaper that “I was shocked when I learned Iowa and Mississippi have never elected a woman governor, senator or member of Congress. There has got to be something at work here…when you look at the numbers, how can Iowa be ranked with Mississippi? That’s not what I see. That’s not the quality. That’s not the communitarianism. That’s not the openness I see in Iowa.”

At a press conference at the Obama campaign’s Jackson Headquarters, Former Governor and Obama Campaign Mississippi Vice Chair Ray Mabus said, “Throughout this campaign, Senator Clinton has shown a disturbing pattern of writing off and criticizing states that she’s lost or that she doesn’t expect to do well in, including small states and southern states. Back in Iowa, Senator Clinton said: “How can Iowa be ranked with Mississippi? That’s not the quality. That’s not the communitarianism, that’s not the openness I see in Iowa.”

“Now, we certainly need to elect more women to office in this state, and have more women in leadership roles like Reecy Dickson, who has taken the helm of the Legislative Black Caucus. We want to work to grow our party so we can get more excellent women into office. But Senator Clinton’s derogatory comments are exactly the wrong way to go about that. “

7. You do know
that ole Miss is not what you would call a progressive state. Ever heard of the KKK. If you took what she said as an insult, maybe it was, but try to enlighten Miss. Iowa is at least a reasonable place and I too am surprised that they have never elected any women to high places. It's about time to give the women a chance, unless you think the old white guys have down such a great job that we don't need to consider that.

11. A direct insult to Mississippi, and a back-handed insult to
Iowa "I can't believe YOU'RE no better than MISSISSIPPI!"

Either it's deliberate, or she is one of the most politically tone-deaf politicians of the modern age. And if it's deliberate, I don't see what she thinks to gain by it.

5. For someone supposedly so smart, she sure says stupid things.
Insulting people in all the states you don't think you'll need is not the smartest way to run a campaign. :eyes:

6. I like the Obama camp's move on this one.
Reacting strongly, but still with class. No need to put up with her lies but there's also no need to lower themselves to her level.

8. Well, how the hell CAN Iowa be ranked with Mississippi, poorest dumbest fatest state?

I've lived in Mississippi since Truman was president. All of us here who might conceivably vote for a Dem for President, like when Jimmy Carter carried the state, all of us know we live in the poorest state, the least educated state, the state at the bottom of all the heaps. That's why we expect politicians and government officials to DO something the fuck about it. Like when during Bill Clinton's administration, the income gap actually narrowed for the first time in decades.

In our eyes, to see a comparatively rich, educated, 'enlightened' state like Iowa ranked with Mississippi for anything is quite remarkable. Especially the backwardness of unequal treatment for women.

I understand of course why she apologized to Senator Lott and why he accepted it. Decorum and PC requires that we not notice that we live in the poorest, least educated state etc etc etc

Hillary is not writing Mississippi off. She will be here Thursday for the Jefferson Jackson Hamer Dinner, and Bill will be in Hattiesburg, Meridian and Tupelo Friday. They show up for us because we show up for them.

Press releasing an old sound bite from last year ain't much of a campaign from Obama. Everybody already knows about Mississippi goddam. As of tonight, Obama has no scheduled appearances down here at the bottom of the heaps.

13. Thank you
I wish I could travel more. It is always nice to meet people, learn their perspective, understand more of America from different eyes other than my own. If I could travel I could meet good folks like you in person but I must rely on the internet for my education. Thanks for being part of it.

She figured Mississippi wouldn't matter and she could insult them. She had no problems praising Iowa and I wonder why. Now it will come back to bite her.

28. Hillary will be keynote speaker in Mississippi at the Jefferson Jackson Hamer Dinner tonight.
See you there, early!
http://www.msdemocrats.net/Press%20Statements/e-mail.html

A spokesman for Obama said he will not attend the state Democratic Party's 26th Annual Jefferson Jackson Hamer Day Dinner Thursday in Canton.

He and Sen. Clinton were both invited to attend.

All talk, no walk.
