I Met Kerry's Brother Today
my local state rep hosted tons of Massachusetts big wigs, and a few little wigs, at her house today ... it was a fundraiser for John Kerry ... the keynote speaker was John's brother Cam ...

the turnout was way beyond what they had even hoped for ... we were squished in the place like boston baked beans ... i'm pretty sure they raised some serious dollars ...

Cam seemed very confident about how things were going ... he said they've raised over $50 million and that the fundraising was going extremely well ...

i had a chance to speak to him very briefly and told him that I thought civil war in Iraq was inevitable no matter what the U.S. policy was ... I think that freaked him out a little ... i don't think he really wanted to discuss policy issues ...

I also got to speak to my congressman, Jim McGovern about Kerry's Iraq position ... McGovern is just great ... he agreed that civil war was inevitable ... i challenged him to defend Kerry's position on Iraq ... he said, "look, Kerry believes no matter what else we do, we have to internationalize our support for Iraq ... we need to take the U.S. face off the situation ... " While McGovern is way to the left of Kerry, he seemed tolerant of Kerry's position as a starting point ...

if it means withdrawing some forces fairly soon and a little begging and pleading for the U.N. to return, even in just a temporary humanitarian role, he seemed supportive of Kerry ... but he, like many of us on DU, sees any occupation as a lost cause ... I think Kerry is wrong on Iraq but I'm willing to cut him some slack during the campaign ... but not once he's elected ...

everyone who spoke said they had never seen the democrats this united ... Cam indicated that a VP would be selected fairly soon because they need another prominent voice to counter the republican smear campaign ... all the speakers said they could feel the energy in the party no matter where they travelled ...

sometimes you hear speeches that try to convince you how well things are going but they don't feel quite right ... this was not the case today ... everyone realizes all too well what's at stake this year; and everyone believes we really can win ...

1. That's quite heartening.
I was down a bit earlier this week; it seemed as though all the media would chant is "Bush is god.. Bush is god.."

2. Great news for the campaign.
Just wish it weren't tempered by the frightful news from Iraq. I hate these schizo days.
