Delaware or California plan |
|
at the upcoming DNC in August we must get our party to adopt either the Delaware or California plan for primaries in 2012 and end this nonsense.
Basically it would allow NH and Iowa to go first in Mid january. Then after that, the first week of, February, March, April, May the rest of the states go, in order of population from smallest to largest.
They would give a good cross regional representation on each of the primary dates, and everyone would likely have a say in who is our nominee. (unless we have a sitting D president with no opposition)

1. I have a better idea: Primary Day |
|
And no early returns. Just count them and release the results the following morning.

2. only if there are several primary days to narrow things, or runoff voting |
|
otherwise you can split the vote between many candidates and end up with one that the majority wouldn't have wanted.

5. and still I'd rather see a couple rounds of voting |
|
because ordering more than 3 or 4 candidates would get absurd too.

3. Rotating regional primaries sounds more fair |
|
That allows a region of the country to go first every so many years and doesn't continually give preference to certain states.
The whole point of a primary system is to AVOID a "national primary" and allow the candidates to do retail politicking, shaking hands and meeting in voters' living rooms, as opposed to campaigning entirely via mass media. I'm in California and I never expect to meet a candidate personally, but by dividing the country up into regions and letting candidates focus on one at a time might allow me to see some locally- slanted coverage, focusing more on issues unique to my state.

6. Anything allowing Iowa and NH to retain their "first" status |
|
is a no go for me. Let somebody else have a turn. I don't care who, just as long as it's neither of them. They've had this out-sized power in our nominating process for far too long.
