Obama needs an SNL appearance...soon. |
|
Seriously, his best hope to rebound is to begin portraying himself as somewhat less of an iconic, speech giving, agent of change and more of a guy that you want to go out and grab a beer with. Even as popular as he is with younger voters, and despite the rallies and the hip persona that he puts forth, there is a personal element, an almost intangible, that comes across when you appear on a program like SNL and poke fun at yourself a bit.
If I were his campaign manager, I would be exploring this angle now. Believe me, polling organizations have cited HRC's SNL appearance as a reason for her boost in Ohio and Texas, and in the national polls. If it can work for a personality as polarizing and divisive as Hillary Clinton, I believe it could do at least as much, if not a whole lot more for Obama.

It didn't work out well. According to SNL people, he wanted to control the skit, they said no, so it was more of a cameo appearence for him.

The show is a total scam, and not just for their political "humor". The show actually, quite literally, sucks ass. I hadn't seen it in maybe 10 years (with any seriousness), and watched the other night in horror. I just cannot believe they call any of that humor. The juno girl?!?! The blond child-actress talk show? and so on, I mean really.. Puke.

Don't think he's good in that scene. He's good in a Leno and Letterman type setting. But it would just appear desperate, kind of like how HRC appeared when she went on. SNL sucks.

15. Obama just needs to be Obama... |
|
Hillary and her people beat his ass pretty hard last week, and they were making no bones about their viciousness (not being critical here, it IS politics) nor the relentlessness of their attacks.
And then, here comes Hillary on SNL, and all of a sudden she is joining in the frivolity, making fun of herself, laughing...
and looking nice and likeable and somewhat...softer in comparison to the preceding 6 or 7 days....
great political theater and well done, at that...
THAT is why SNL worked for Hillary...
play the Wicked Witch for a week, turn into Cinderella on Saturday Night...

As I read in an op-ed posted here yesterday, he could be talking about getting health care done, turning things around in the country, and Debbie's response could be, "Yeah, that sounds good but we're all going to die anyway."
Wah-wah.

He needs to make the rounds...Letterman, John Stewart, etc.
SNL would be great because there is nothing better than humor to diffuse popular criticism of you. If you can laugh off barbs that your candidate is trying to destroy you with--what a coup.
I also think he needs to use Oprah, Ted Kennedy and other Dem stalwarts who have endorsed him.
I fully support Obama and nothing would change my mind about that support. However, he does need some work in the speech-coach department. It drives me nuts that it takes him 10 minutes to say 15 words. His speech needs to be more succinct and pointed. He comes off wishy-washy when he speaks like that.
He's a great candidate and he's got the right message and the right ideas about policy. He just needs a bit of a makeover...some improvements.
I see that he's not doing rallies lately. If that's because Hillary tried to position him as "speeches only", that's really unfortunate, because that is what she wanted and his lower visibility will only aid her. Those speeches were a visible testament to his popularity and his inspiring qualities. He needs to talk tough, get more specific about his ideas---AND keep the rollicking rallies going. Stopping those is a HUGE blunder. Mix it up with some town-hall meetings and round-tables--but keep those rallies going.
Just my 2 cents. I like to play armchair political strategist now and again. ;)

I agree that a better showcase for him is a talk show format. He is very witty and charming in that kind of a setting. I think the more SNL reveals itself as partisan, the more pathetic Hillary's appearance there will seem. He should go on the Daily Show, which is where the real action (and humor) is these days.

Last time we asked for a President we could have a beer with, we got Bush. Actually, you can't have a beer with Bush - he'll get drunk, hit on someone's wife, get himself and you in a huge brawl, and leave you dragging his ass to a cab while he pukes on your shirt. But I digress.
Still, it wouldn't hurt for him to start making appearances on SNL, as well as the Daily Show and Colbert Report.
