TO: Representative Steve King 1609 Longworth House Office Building 1609 LHOB Washington, D.C., District of Columbia 20515-1505
Sir:
Re your remarks of Friday, March 7th, that should Barack Obama be elected president, the “terrorists would be dancing in the streets”.
I hate to be the one to break it to you, sir, but the terrorists won’t be dancing over anyone’s election to the US presidency, due to the fact that after the seven-plus years of the Bush administration, they are simply all danced out.
Although we cannot ever know for sure, their first celebration was most likely in the months leading up to September 11, 2001. Surely there was much merriment over the fact that the insistence of people like Richard Clarke that the new administration should be taking past intelligence, along with increased chatter, seriously and act accordingly, his admonitions were falling on decidedly deaf ears.
And then there was the August 6th memo, “Bin Laden Determined to Strike in the US”. As Mr. Bush and his cohorts chose to ignore that warning, the dancing in the streets must have been truly phenomenal.
While the unbridled dancing must have been something to behold on 9-11, as things turned out, the terrorists were in for many more reasons to take to the streets in wild abandon in the years to come.
As you and your party persist in telling the citizenry, the terrorists hate us for our freedoms. Imagine the dance-‘til-you-drop atmosphere around the world as those freedoms were dispensed with, one after the other.
Bush’s insistence that American citizens could and would be spied upon, their communications wiretapped without cause or a FISA warrant, undoubtedly led to conga-lines – perhaps even Shock & Awe-type fireworks – as the Bush administration took away those very freedoms we are allegedly hated for.
It would seem that those terrorist party-goers would have been swept off their feet by now, but it was just the beginning of a dance marathon the likes of which we’ve never seen before. Outing a covert CIA operative as a result of political revenge must have had those two-stepping terrorists doing a Boogaloo Down Broadway in record numbers. And when the NIEs started spelling out how more terrorists were being created as a result of Bush’s occupation of Iraq, the number of terrorists doing the Quagmire Shuffle was no doubt elevated to the kind of popularity that choreographers only dream about.
The destruction of our economy due to your “president’s” policies alone must have caused fancy footwork to run amok in streets all over the planet – and the fact that we are in debt up to our proverbial eyeballs will be dance-worthy for decades to come.
As for your statement that your “comments were not meant to demean Obama, but to warn how an Obama presidency would look to the world,” I have to assume you were joking.
Surely you can’t be serious that the United States of America should be electing its next president based on how it would look to the world. If we were the least bit concerned with how the world views us, would our ‘president’ and the party that supports him have sanctioned torture, renditions, secret prisons?
Would Bush’s “signing statements”, which have irreparably damaged our heretofore highly-respected standing as a nation of laws, have been permitted – nay, encouraged – if we were the least bit interested in how we are globally perceived?
Finally, I cannot help but opine on your remark re Barack Obama that “his middle name does matter. It matters because they read a meaning into that." The only people who are reading a meaning into that name are you and yours, sir. And again I hate to be the bearer of such sad tidings, but after the disastrous presidency of George Walker Bush, the last thing the American voter is concerned about is a candidate’s middle name. Of course a certain last name is now representative of the lowest approval rating of any sitting US president, and the phrase "Worst.President.Ever" will be connected with that name for all time.
But by all means, please feel free to try and convince the American people that such idiotic nonsense actually matters – because if we’re being honest here, idiotic nonsense is the only thing the Republicans have left to run on.
No offence, Mr. King, but the terrorists won’t be dancing in the streets over an Obama presidency – because even if they were of a mind to, the truth is that they are just plumb tuckered out after all the dancin’ they’ve been doing since Mr. Mission Accomplished brought about the very destruction of our nation that he has been warning against since day one. He simply saved the terrorists the time and effort – which has obviously left them plenty of leisure hours for dancing to their heart’s content.
Yours Very Truly, Nancy Greggs US Citizen and Democrat
