Coattails in IL-14 (Hastert) - GO FOSTER GO!
Edited on Sat Mar-08-08 10:03 PM by Kittycat
Obama helped Foster campaign here with ads, mailers, and calls. I know it's helped make an impact in IL-14 (Hastert's old seat). The race is a nail biter between Oberweis - AKA Milk Nazi & Bill Foster. This was a hard faught race here, and a lot of money had to be poured in, along with support from leading politicians. We have to go through this all over again this fall - so keep that in mind. The more our party fractures, and the more negative HRC goes, it can and will impact these down ticket races. We need coattails to take back these seats. It doesn't matter who you support, the Kitchen Sink needs to be re-installed, and welded down to the countertop.

Our results are coming in now. Here is where we stand...
http://www.suburbanchicagonews.com/beaconnews/index.html

99% Reporting
Name Party Votes Vote %
Foster , Bill Dem 50,947 52%
Oberweis , Jim GOP 46,125 48%

ETA: Special thanks also goes to Durbin & all the great volunteers that I know worked their backsides off canvassing, making calls, etc. I know on every level this was a joint effort to promote a great candidate. It just goes to show though, how important it is to keep things clean to ensure these seats come fall. Thanks also to John Laesch, whom I believe really helped set the groundwork when Hastert ran last go around.

23. 88% reporting, still 6-point lead for Foster
:woohoo:

It would take a big surge to overturn this Dem win with only 12% left to report.

If so, do they have it until November's election?

7. Yes that's exactly it
Whoever wins this will have to contest it again in November. If Foster can do well here he has to bust his ass until November.

8. Yes, they have it for now - then re-elect for November.
On 2/5, we had to vote for a special election ticket & regular election ticket for this fall. Foster won the Dem party ticket, and everyone out here has worked their tails off. I am truly impressed at how well they canvassed. I only wish they would have had more signage in our part of he district - because oberweis is everywhere with signs and of course his ice cream/milk shops on every other block.

The GOP has to be crapping their pants at the sight of this. If Foster pulls it out, this is only a precursor of things to come. And you're right about the proverbial kitchen sink.

15. Come on Kittycat, I'm in the 14th and received 1 robo call from Obama.
So let's not give a Foster's possible win credit to Obama. Foster was a good candidate and I got a zillion mailers from him along with the endorsement from Durbin.

Edited on Sat Mar-08-08 09:44 PM by Kittycat
I'm not saying it was solely because of Obama, and you're right - Durbin deserves credit as well. Durbin was also on Kos the other night reminding us to vote and do our part to help. I'm saying that I think it helped lend credibility to the campaign to have positive leaders out there supporting him.

ETA: And we received several - SEVERAL calls (live and robo) from the campaign since we're on the Dem list. I know the volunteers also worked hard. The point is, if we tarnish our own candidates from within the party - it cuts those opportunities to help, off.

33. Well the first 2 sentences of your post certainly imply Obama got him the win.
And it's not true at all. Foster was a great candidate and won because of that NOT because Obama supported him.

If it wasn't going to of any help - then there wouldn't have been any need for it. I don't dispute Foster was a great candidate.

There were some issues with losing a delegate recently, so it would be replacing it.

27. Credit also to Laesch.
I don't think we would be here today, if he hadn't laid the groundwork to get people thinking outside of the box. With almost no money, he took Hastert to task... Just think if he would have had money when his campaign was running. It was a near tie between laesch & foster this go around.

29. Yep, that's on top of the RNC's missing $$$ that the FBI is investigating.
The only thing that keeps me in good spirits these days when I think about our party chaos is that the Rethugs are in much worse shape as a party.

Across the country the people are starting to repudiate their brand of politics and governance. IL-14 is a very conservative district. The fact that the voters (that voted for Hasty over and over) wouldn't vote for the "R" in the race is very telling.

42. No. Well, maybe they could, but Oberweis is on the ballot in November.
I think this is crucial, because it opens Foster up for any criticism. Oberweis ran a sleezy "kitchen sink" campaign. Anything he could throw him or exaggerate, even lie - to see what would stick, was done. This fall, they're going to have to work even harder, IMO. I worked on my neighbors, but hope to be able to phone bank next time around. I tried to get a list to make calls from home (like you can do for Obama), but they weren't able to accommodate that this time. With two little boys, it's hard for me to break away without a sitter.

But not enough to cut into Foster's lead. A very good win. Now we need to defend it in November.
