SUSA: Specter up 46-40
2004 SurveyUSA Election Polls
Sorted: Newest Data on Top Last Updated:4/6/04

U.S. Senate, PA GOP Primary 4/6/2004
Specter 46%
Toomey 40%
Other/Undecided 14%
Data Collected 4/3/04 - 4/5/04

http://www.surveyusa.com/currentelectionpolls.html

Since Undecideds tend to split in favor of the challenger by a ratio of 2:1 or higher, this polling says that Toomey is getting very close to knocking Specter off after all.

1. Interesting numbers
Last poll I saw had Specter up 15. This must be the poll CNN referenced when they said the race was now in single digits.

2. Around here, Toomey is making a dent.
In our neighborhood (western Chester County and eastern Lancaster Co,) the Toomey signs are EVERYWHERE. Haven't seen a single Specter sign.

The churches around here function as a very effective means of communication. I don't know whether they are actually speaking from the pulpit, but if you want to get a right-wing message out, all you have to do is get someone to spread the word to the after-church crowd on Sunday. They are focused and active. My guess is this is how they're doing it around here.

3. I saw a lot of signs in Beaver County
Toomey will be easier to beat than Spectre, although either will lose.

Toomey is completely insane. He would get trounced.

10. I'm from Beaver County
Lived in Ambridge until 1981. Went back and my heart broke at how the whole area died. Am shocked that what was once a hard core Democratic area has such a sleazy Tom De Lay Clone as its' congresswoman (Melissa Hart). Looks like the GOP has taken over the whole area since the blue collar victims of the steel industry death fled. So sad.

As for Specter, I hope he DOES go down. Nobody deserves it more than that liar! I am sending $$$ to Hoeffel and I hope that Joe pulls it off. It would be nice to have Joe cancel out Prick Santorum and then have Barbara Hafer run against Prick in 2 years. It would be wonderful for PA to have 2 Democratic Senators!

4. Specter isn't bad, for a republican
As Specter's ads say, "Toomey's not far right, he's far out"

11. Agreed, I'd much rather him than crotch running the judiciary committee...
But if we can get a democrat in at the same time then I'm all for it. Republicans do whatever they can to take seats even from some of the most respected democrats. Except for Lincoln Chafee and maybe Olympia Snowe, there's not a single Republican I would have a problem unseating.

17. I have to agree
Though I'd rather see Orrin Hatch or Santorum unseated, the fact is that if Specter loses to Hoeffel, we'll probably have Pat Leahy as the Judiciary Chair, and that would be great by me.

I agree that getting rid of any Republicans is a good thing, even Snowe or Chafee (if only because they did not support the fillibuster of the judges).

19. Well Chafee voted against the IWR
Edited on Mon Apr-12-04 02:40 AM by Hippo_Tron
He's a great liberal even though he caucuses with the dark side. Supporting the fillibuster would've broken the thin ice that he probably already is on with his Republican colleagues. Plus, when you try to replace somebody like that you run the risk of getting a DINO. Snowe is not quite as much on our side and I wouldn't have as much of a problem unseating her, however, I'd hope that they keep it a clean campaign and don't run smear ads.

5. I think Specter will lose.
His support keeps dropping and Toomey's supporters are fiercely committed.

7. Wait a minute, we have a good Dem candidate.
If Specter loses the primary, Joe Hoeffel probably has a much better chance of winning in November.

I don't think Toomey can possibly carry PA in the general. But Specter could.

8. Exactly
and didn't We have a crappy candidate against Santorum. PA in an election may favor us if we can GOTV better than the Repugs....ut still, I'm also concerned about a Toomey victory.

12. we can pick this up
the candidate against Santorum in 2000 was a pro-lifer, so voters didn't see much of a choice I guess.

15. Specter WOULD beat Hoeffel easily. Hoeffel would very likely beat Toomey
Toomey is to the right of Santorum. He would not only give us a senate seat, he would hurt Bush big time in a state Bush has to present himself as a moderate in.

9. Good news, Hoeffel can beat Toomey
I'm a gambling man, and I'd rather see a (D) in the Senate.
I think the odds of Hoeffel kicking Toomey is good especially in a presidential race where Kerry is likely to carry PA (if he campaigns here hard?! Has he even come here yet?).

LOONEY TOOMEY LOONEY TOOMEY LOONEY TOOMY!!

Consistent conservative Toomey is accustomed to success

By Patrick Kerkstra

Inquirer Staff Writer

In the late 1970s, when inflation was rampant and memories of Watergate and the Vietnam War were still raw, Pat Toomey spent part of each school day in a high school history classroom quietly seething.

It was the teacher who got under his skin. Too many lectures were about capitalism's failings, corruption in Washington, or how America was no better than the Soviet Union.

None of it squared with Toomey's patriotic take on U.S. history or his budding conservative ideology.

"I felt we were a great, great country, a great civilization," said Toomey, 42, who has represented the Lehigh Valley and parts of Montgomery County in the House of Representatives since 1999.

20. one of Toomey's Specter bashing ads
(not that I like Specter any better....)

ennywhoo -- the ad claims that Specter is a "liberal"

well, the political "line" in determining who is conservative or who is liberal all depends on where you think you stand in relation to others

from my place on the political line -- Specter is conservative and I wouldn't even put him close to a moderate position

this makes me wonder just how conservative and how far to the right is Toomey if he thinks Specter is liberal

22. Pennsylvania doesn't have a good track record with distinguishing
between moderate and right-wing Republicans. They've elected Sphinctorum twice now. Yeah, if I was a Democrat I'd rather face Toomey than Specter but only because it would take away the incumbency factor not because I had confidence that the voters would see what a whacko he was.

14. Good
We'll beat this Toomey character in November. If we take seats in PA, OK, AK, IL and maybe CO, we have a real shot at winning back the majority.

18. sounds a little like playing with fire
when folks hope for a Toomey win ... I mean, Santorum is elected by the same voters. Hasn't scary Santorum been elected two times? Doesn't seem to be a slam dunk that if the more extreme candidate wins the primary that it is win for democrats. Not a huge Spector fan, but geez... could we end up with Santorum Squared?
