1. Thank you, Nicholas Kristof .. and
Edited on Sun Mar-09-08 02:27 PM by zidzi
and thanks Old Crusoe for bringing us this..

When Mrs. Clinton was asked in a television interview a week ago whether Mr. Obama is a Muslim, she denied it firmly — but then added, most unfortunately, “as far as I know.” To his credit, Mr. McCain scolded a radio host who repeatedly referred to “Barack Hussein Obama” and later called him a Manchurian candidate.

Martin Luther wasn’t a model of tolerance but even he took the position that, “I’d rather be ruled by a wise Turk than a foolish Christian.” In this presidential campaign, we should at least aspire to be as open-minded as 16th-century Germans.

Wasn't it after hilary got 3rd place in Iowa that the "Muslim" question about Obama came up?

2. I love that quote on Martin Luther, who is one of the really controversial
world-changers around.

And I love it that Kristof has a great library of reading behind him before he sits down at a computer.

Hi, zidzi.

3. Hi Crusoe...I bet you do..
It's always interesting to have history woven into our current events.

I hope this article by Kristoff gets some people thinking in the right direction.

Don't those two words just about capture HRC's entire campaign? Most unfortunate.

12. "Unfortunate" is certainly correct, if charitable.
That phrase she tacked on, "as far as I know" is not the only reason to reject her candidacy but it is as you say -- an encapsulation of what is wrong with her candidacy.

judgment has impressed me.

10. Kristof says voters more likely to discriminate based on gender than race
so how does this mean Obama is at a disadvantage?

"Americans have typically said in polls that they are less willing to vote for a woman than a black, and Shirley Chisholm (a black woman who ran for president in 1972) always said that she encountered more prejudice because of her sex than her race."

In light of these facts, why does he not lament the fact that Clinton is having to deal with sexist voters?

Because he is a man, I suppose.

11. Many voters are post-gender voters and are throttled over deep
anxieties regarding elder care, treatment of veterans, and the strength of their commmunities.

As well as restoring our once-gleaming reputation for treating other cultures with respect, a trail now nearly lost after 7-8 years of this horrendous administration.
