16,000 Republicans in Cuyahoga Crossed Over and Voted Democratic in Primary
By Amanda Garrett
Cleveland Plain Dealer

Sunday 09 March 2008

A staggering 16,000-plus Republicans in Cuyahoga County switched parties when they voted in last week's primary.

That includes 931 in Rocky River, 1,027 in Westlake and 1,142 in Strongsville. More than a third of the Republicans in Solon and Bay Village switched. Pepper Pike had the most dramatic change: just under half its Republicans became Democrats. And some of those who changed - it's difficult to say how many - could be in trouble with the law.

At least one member of the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections wants to investigate some Republicans who may have crossed party lines only to influence which Democrat would face presumed Republican nominee John McCain in November.

Those who crossed lines were supposed to sign a pledge card vowing allegiance to their new party.

In Cuyahoga County, dozens and dozens of Republicans scribbled addendums onto their pledges as new Democrats:

"For one day only."

"I don't believe in abortion."

A Plain Dealer review of thousands of records showed few of those who switched were challenged by poll workers.

1. As an Obama supporter I say
Oh well-that's the way the cookie crumbles-I won't whine or cry for Ohio to change the way THEY do their primaries...like the Clinton supporters are so quick to do in every scenario that doesn't help The Monster

9. Not surprising....
in this world of selfish expediency, or 'whatever works for me is right.'
---------------------

snip from the article:

"Her niece, Republican Sherry Newell, crossed over Tuesday after hearing Limbaugh. Newell said she voted for Obama because she thought McCain had a better chance against him.

Regardless, Sherry said she thought it was a great idea to mess with the other party if it helped McCain win.

"I don't mind being deceptive to politicians," she said. "They are deceptive to us."

-----------------
(Now think about the logic in that...I'm gonna get back at lying politicians by lying and rigging the game. Hmmmm...could backfire).

12. What's illegal about it??
That's the kind of nasty, underhanded trick members of both parties have been using for years. It's how McCain won Michigan in 2000.

(Lots of R's think McCain is the nominee today because of Dem cross-over voters.)

14. In Ohio...
Party switching can be a fifth degree felony, punishable by up to six months and $2,500 fine. Not certain how it's brought to court, but this is on the books. Serious stuff. Pollworkers are to have the "switcher" sign a Form 10-W stating that they wish to support their new party; this form is witnessed by all four pollworkers for that precinct. It locks the voter into that Party's primary for the next two primary cycles. However, in the General this November, the issue will not arise. as it's open to all voters. But the nest primary, look out!
I personally worked a precinct here in Cincinnati; had about four 10-W situations out of 275 or so voters. There were many more independents (NON) asking for Dem ballots, but since a NON-to-DEM is not a party switch, no 10-W is required. Catch 22...very difficult to ascertain how many NONs usually vote R. Meddling in the other party's business SHOULD be a punishable offense, IMHO.

13. I think a lot of republicans may have crossed over,..
especially in Bay, Westlake and River, to vote for Dennis...

Why, because he spent most of his first term in Office getting money to shore up the erosion plagued North Coast and he was instrumental in getting the trains that had rumbled through the area ten to fifteen times a day redirected south. That cut the train traffic down to about 2-3 a day...

These are the very same people who were calling for his head back in 1979 when he was busy saving the muni power plant from being devoured by huge for profit utilities...
