I've been posting on DU since 2005. When I came here, I loved the GD: P section. I loved discussing issues, being a productive member, and adding discussion to the debates and threads posted.

But now, every day I'm asking myself why I still post here.

Is it just the primary season? Maybe so. But you should be ashamed at the fact you let it get this bad. There is no excuse for this, even if it is primary season.

Very impressive, considered the .. uh.. delicate political circumstances in the US since 2001. I'll of course agree with the OP that the GD:primaries has revealed new depths of internet serial smear posting to me, but it's hardly the admin's or mods fault. It's a limitation to what you can do to limit that development as admin or mod without stifling the debate altogether. People are angry, that's understandable. But the responsibility for a civil forum really lies within each person contributing if it's gonna be any point to have an open debate.

To twist an old adage:
'We don't know which type of weapons the election 2008 will be fought with, but the election in 2012 will be fought with sticks and stones.'

In a couple of weeks, the media and the state apparatus, the business, the churches and numerous NGOs will drag a stinking elephant corpse out of the closet and hold it up as the One and Pure way for the future. Plaster, gum and tape will prop it up, and together with a new spray paint it will be sold to the public, at any price. They will go very far and even further to 'win' the election because they've burnt all bridges, so the means will correspond to the stakes.

The DemocraticUnderground is a haven for free speech for progressives.

We have gone through this here now enough times since 2001 during primary seasons to know the score and what to expect.

Skinner, with great foresight, astutely and purposely broke the General Discussion forum away from all primary chat and created the Primary Forum for the very reason you bring up. I think that was a very pro-active and good decision he made early on.

I also think the three post rule was a very smart and judicious enhancement to the forum.

The most obnoxious and disrupting posters have been tomb-stoned. Those in our community who have sometimes gone way overboard in a moment of passion, but who have a history of being contributors to our collective dialogs have been temporarily suspended (which I really like and prefer to tomb-stoning, although it has its place, too). Those who have gone too far with a single thread or post sometimes find that their comments have been properly deleted and that even includes me.

We are only a mirror of what is happening in Democratic households around the country, between Democrats who are friends and who have struggled together, but find themselves supporting opposing candidates.

There is a real suspicion among Obama supporters that the establishment within the Party will somehow rob him of his victory. It is understandable.

There is growing hurt among Clinton supporters as they see the math working more and more against them. It is understandable.

My hope is that this will resolve itself sooner, not later. It will take the candidates to do it. Skinner can not solve this. But know this, it will be all over within the next 6-8 weeks.

But if we were to squelch speech here, then we would lose far more than we would ever gain.

This is not the easiest environment to patrol right now. Many of us, myself included, have let emotions rule our behavior in unfortunate moments and the leniency Skinner and the mods have demonstrated is almost too much. I think the reason they are doing this is that they understand how emotionally volatile this situation is making a lot of us.

I can tell you, personally, that I begged--literally begged, in private email and finally in a public post--to have my account cancelled (for my own good and the good of DU) and the request was denied, I was told, because a concensus of mods or admins did not agree with my decision. That's true democracy.

This is a challenging period here at DU, no doubt. I'm going to try to do better to moderate my emotions and avoid participating in threads that upset me.

What has happened to everyone here? The nasty comments have gone on far too long yet almost nothing is done about it.

As recently as six months ago I could allow my young daughter a "Hello" post and she'd receive 40,50 posts full of warm responses. Now I'm lucky if someone doesn't accuse me of child abuse and a blatant disregard overall for her future because of the candidate I support.

There have been several things that the moderators have done, including tombstoning a number of the most egregious posters, and setting a three thread per day limit to each poster in GD: P. I suppose there might be room for yet another round of tombstoning, which seems to help -- though somehow one wonders how many of those are somehow coming back to DU under other identities.

The extreme negativity is, and I think has been largely recognized by the moderators to be (though I have a good while back criticized them for apparently not at that time addressing this issue) largely from at least ostensible HRC supporters directed at Obama. There are excesses on all sides but they are nowhere near equal. And the pattern of tombstoning, when it occurred, seemed to reflect that.

This primary season, in comparison with 2004, is MUCH longer. I as an Obama supporter had strongly hoped he would carry at least ONE of the two big states (Ohio or Texas) in the popular vote, thus putting an end to press treating the campaign as still viable. But that hasn't happened, even though the 'viability' of the HRC campaign is as much a product of the MSM spin that it is still competitive as of the facts on the ground. It is true that a really active campaign can SOMETIMES help the Democrats by raising public interest and awareness, but in this situation it seems to this observer that HRC has decided on a scorched-earth kitchen-sink attack strategy, and this is of course appealing to the many trolls (not all the HRC supporters) who are supporting her on DU. In turn, this does provoke an albeit noticeably lesser reaction from Obama supporters, but the situation faced at DU really does appear to be rooted in objective present political circumstances going on beyond DU, at least in large part.

Perhaps "pruning" out some of the more egregious posters yet again, presumably after ample private warnings of whatever they consist of to each one, might help -- but I think that at least until the Democrats and the MSM RECOGNIZE a presumptive nominee (almost certainly Obama unless some bizarre reversal occurs), DUers will continue to have to ride out the storm.
