Hillary Clinton Crosses Her Heart
By Michael Turk,

Hillary has a new web ad up on at least a handful of sites. The creative is a little uninspiring, but what really caught my attention was what they say without saying a word. Here's a grab of the ad:

What's most interesting about the ad is their choice of picture. It's especially interesting when you look at it in context of all the Internet chatter about Barack Obama's alleged "un-American" activities.

What do you do when the national anthem plays? If you're like most Americans you stand with your hand over your heart. This posture says a few things about a person...they're American, they love their country, and most think that it also honors those who have fallen protecting our liberties. You might think that a U.S. Senator like Barack Obama would understand this about the national anthem. You might think that a U.S. Senator like Barack Obama would appreciate all of this more than most people because he's seen the power of the people elect him to office and privilege.

Now Clinton's people have one a good job portraying themselves as pure of heart when it comes to forwarding Internet rumors about Obama. This ad, however, seems to be sending a very subtle message to anyone familiar with the un-American charge. It's not overt, but the pic of Hillary definitely seems to say, "See. I'm American. I put my hand over my heart. He doesn't." It may have been unintentional, sure. They may not be that clever over at Camp Hill. But maybe they are...

I don't know what to think... but anyone who thinks that campaigns don't try to put out ads that effect people on a subconscious level, need to take a few marketing classes. Advertising is a fine science and subtle subconscious manipulation is in every quality ad. Presidential politics are no different.

3. Hilarious!! Now Obama should put an ad out, showing him saluting the flag
the RIGHT way...

5. There are subtle reasons why it is her left hand too.
Could be to remind people that she is married... Thus making people remember her husband... to remind Democrats of the "Clinton team"... There can be more than one message in one picture. Like I said... I don't know. I do know that good marketers pay that close to details and have experts analyze EVERY detail.

8. it gives her plausible deniability
if the issue is raised.

Nobody looking at the picture casually would realize it's her left hand, so the message does get conveyed.

BUT if the issue is raised by the media that it's an attempt to raise the Obama-is-unpatriotic meme, she can say, "no way, I'm not even doing the pledge in that photo, it's my left hand!"

11. The first thing I noticed was that it was her left hand. I also noticed
that she's laughing. Do you think it's at all possible that they chose this picture becuase they think it's a flattering image or shows her softer side or that she has a sense of humor or any number of other traits?

15. yes it's possible.
I'm a bit cynical and jaded at anything coming out of the Clinton camp though.

If it were just one instance of something like this, then most of us would give them the benefit of the doubt. But it's been constant in this campaign, a steady drip of this type of thing, the jesse jackson comment, the shuck and jive comment, the barack hussein obama comment by kerrey, the "was he a drug dealer?" comment by shaheen, the "as far as I know" he's not a muslim on 60minutes, the realease of the photo to Drudge by the Clinton camp, the muslim smear campaign in Iowa by the Clintons and so on. You get the picture. It's part of a pattern and I take the photo in that context.

Most people don't think about what hand it is, they just see a hand over the heart. And it plays off of the anti-Obama, FALSE, pledge of allegiance smear.

2. It may have been unintentional? Yeah, like the scratches she put on Bill's face
when she found out about Monica...

4. How to post a picture
right-click on the picture (I think it's ctrl-click on a Mac) and select 'copy image location', then just past the URL into the text of the message.

7. Huh?
Looks more like they wanted a nice photo of her smiling and showing what appears to be geniune gratitude for supporters.

If you're in to subconscious images, the hand on the chest is more likely a subconscious hint that she's touched by your support.

13. It's a very flattering photo, and I say that as an Obama supporter.
These posts just get more amusing and amusing by the minute, from both camps.

14. Wrong hand - Left hand is used for Soviet style elections
where there is only one candidate on the ballot. I wonder if that ever happened in this election. :sarcasm:
