Within the Hispanic community Kerry leads Shrub by 25 pts!
According to Zogby Kerry leads Shrub 58% to 33% amoungst Hispanics! The poll was taken April 5th but it is such good news I felt like reminding people how wonderful it is.

The DNC has a great article:

2. Cool
Important thing is getting people registered and turning out the vote!

Same goes with other communities...I hope Kerry does as well with African Americans as Gore did in '00.

17. Among African-Americans
Gore got 91% of the African-American vote in 2000.
Among Texas African-Americans it was 95% of the vote

3. This is great news
I'm sure Bush's handlers were/are counting on anti-choice sentiment among Catholic voters.

From what I understand, Hispanics (Latinos here in California) tend to be socially conservative, family values oriented folks. It's one of the tensions within the Democratic party: people who are socially conservative tend to be turned off by some of the current must-haves for liberals, such as gay marriage and abortion rights. That speaks for a significant segment of black voters as well.

Like I said, it's a tension Democrats have to work with. Our party is truly the "big tent" and we have a lot of competing voices. (I come down on the side of social programs that truly would help to shore up struggling families, while expanding the definition of what a family is.) Repubs seem to have it much easier because for the last generation they've been training their members to march in lock-step (or so it seems)...

9. Those that supported Elian's kidnapping are for Jeb Bush

and they are in Florida.

On edit:

I want to add that the Hispanic community at large is rather conservative on social issues. Many are strong supporters of the Catholic Church's position on abortion and GLBT rights, as are those among them that consider themselves Evangelicals (the fastest rising segment of this community).

11. Not accurate
While a majority of Miami Cubans certainly vote Republican, it isn't an overwhelming majority. Democrats enjoy considerable support in that population. There are, in fact, groups of conservative Hispanics all over the place. In Texas, for example, while recent Mexican immigrants are overwhelmingly Democratic, there are aslo significant groups of Hispanics who have lived there for as long as four hundred years, and many of them vote Republican. The real question for Democrats isn't to worry about Republican Hispanics, but to find ways to register Hispanic Democrats and get them to turn out on election day. Hispanics are grossly underrepresented at the ballot box, and its time somebody addressed that.

7. That is a big lead.
The study also shows the Hispanic community is disappointed at the President's lack of leadership, with 62 percent of Hispanics expressing it is time for "someone new" in the White House. In addition, more than half of Hispanic voters believe that the country is heading in the wrong direction.

10. Muy Bien!
Maybe the brown people aren't that enamored with Bush anymore. I haven't heard him speak Spanish lately. I'm from Texas and when Bush campaigned here for governer, he would go to Hispanic areas of the state and speak a few phrases in Spanish. He sounded like Bill Murray on Saturday Night Live when he was the host of the Spanish Game Show - "Quien es el mas macho? Ricardo Montalban o Jack (yack) Lord.:)

13. I Won't be Satisfied Until the Margin is 50 Points -- 75-25%
Gore beat Bush 2-to-1 among Hispanics. The Democratic advantiage seems to have shrunk a little based on the poll. There's no reason it should be even that close this time around.

16. But the question becomes, how?
Here in Phoenix, the Hispanics I know (many, many) are supporting Kerry.

But 2 huge issues keep the more conservative ones from doing so--gay rights and abortion. These are the Hispanic voters who are older, and in many cases, influential.

How do we attract them when the platform supports two issues that they find nearly abhorrent; without turning away traditional Democrats?

These are HUGE voting issues for socially conservative Hispanics who would otherwise definitely vote Dem.
