Stars Raise Cash for George Clooney's Dad
Stars Raise Cash for George Clooney's Dad

WASHINGTON - Some of Hollywood's top draws, including Oscar winners Michael Douglas (news) and Renee Zellweger (news), "Friends" cast member Courteney Cox (news) Arquette and actress Drew Barrymore (news), are playing supporting roles in the candidacy of a Kentucky Democrat.

Their choice: Nick Clooney, father of actor George and brother of the late actress/singer Rosemary.

The 70-year-old Nick Clooney, a former television anchor and newspaper columnist, raised nearly $500,000 in the first three months of this year, according to reports filed with the Federal Election Commission (news - web sites).

A good chunk of the cash came from Hollywood's "A" list.

1. There should be MORE of this in Hollywood...
The "liberal Hollywood elites" should be pumping cash into ALL the key Democratic races across the country... if Kerry wins, it'll be a whole lot easier for him to get stuff done if he has a majority in the House and/or Senate. Sadly, with the economy the way it is, they may be the ONLY liberals who can spare enough money to do the job.

If they can do it for Nick Clooney, why not (for example) Jeff Hardenbrook and Jane Mitakides? They are Ohio candidates for Congress that have a pretty good chance of beating the republican incumbents, if they could come close to raising the same amount of money.

Of course, they should contribute to YOUR local candidates, too, especially if there's a good chance to pick up a seat.

3. I'm not sure how much this helps Clooney
Nick Clooney is running for Congress is the VERY conservaitve 4th district of Kentucky. It voted for Bush 61%-37% and it almost threw out democrat Ken Lucas in 2002 and he is the most conservative democrat in the House and refused to even vote for Pelosi for Speaker.

However, connecting Nick Clooney to Hollywood a lot will lead to his opponent to attack him for being part of Hollywood which may not be too popular in this area. He is leading easily in the polls right now, but that could change and it may be more helpful to show himself to be like the conservative voters in the district.

So they can't do much more...and Nick is well respected in the region.

On edit:

Very cool editorial by George:

Judge Dad, not me, in run for Congress
Your voice: George Clooney

It's recently been brought to my attention that my father, Nick Clooney, has been running for Congress from the 4th District of Kentucky. Although he told me, I didn't really believe him until I started reading all the stories about myself in the paper.

It seems the best way to campaign against my father is to go after me. The head of the Kentucky 4th District GOP, Marcus Carey, is quoted in the Enquirer as saying that because of me, my father and I will "go down with my ship" - a reference to a film I made called The Perfect Storm.

6. Everyone knows Nick is George's dad...
Nick himself is well known as a trusted news celeb in the area, so I don't think any of the people who support him now will backlash because of George's connection. It's going to be more like the Midwest version of the Schwarzenegger election in CA. I think the positive name recognition will be almost unstoppable in this race.

Makes me wish Martin Sheen would come back to Ohio and run here for Congress... his lefty stance would be overwhelmed by his celebrity and his "credibility" as "president" on West Wing.
