Did sexism and race do Hill in today? Obama won the "gender is important" vote 66-32
Edited on Tue Mar-11-08 09:05 PM by jackson_dem
28% of voters said a candidate's gender was important to them. Obama won that group 66-32 while he won the rest by only 52-46. There was also obvious and sad racial voting going on. Obama won the black vote 90-10 while Hillary won whites 74-21. These numbers are not a product of chance, especially since both candidates have almost identical policies. The variable is color and folks voted their color and the math meant Hillary would inevitably lose. You want to know who is playing the race card? Look at who wins every single state that votes on racial lines...

Why did the sexist vote go overwhelmingly to the "uniter"? Why does he win every state that votes on racial lines?

5. Good point. Let's choose some other states
Pick em' and let's look at the exits.

As far as race, the following states have voted on racial lines: South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi. Who won each one by a large margin?

among states that voted along racial lines? Clinton got a higher share of the white vote in each of those states than she did in Georgia, for example. Actually, the same is true of Ohio, as well.

So who has been winning the states that are voting on racial lines?

He got 21% of the white vote in MS today. He wouldn't have won if he didn't swiftboat the Clintons on race and the same goes for all the other states that voted on racial lines. In Alabama he got 22 or 25% of the white vote but won because he did better with his color than Hill did with her color. Whatever happened to the "unity" he promises?

24. OMG you are so fucking CLUELESS
Mississippi does not reflect the rest of the country, and do you think MAYBE, just MAYBE african americans in the deep South are of COURSE going to vote for an african american with a chance of winning, because of the racial tension and history of lynching/cutting/slavery/jim crow/dragging/hanging that occurred regularly in the deep South in those states, and the racial tension that continue there because of that history? Why do you think Hillary gets such overwhelming support from whites in the South? She doesn't get 90-10 but she has been getting 75-25, big difference, and most african americans go for obama about 80-20. So african americans in the deep South have pride in an african american running for president, and you have no idea why, except to say tat he's playing the race card?! You are ridiculous.

25. MS is similar to the handful of other racial voting states
By mentioning states that voted on racial lines it is implied that they are not representative of the country.

Why was Obama losing the black vote prior to swiftboating the Clintons on race? All of what you say may have held water if he weren't losing the black vote for almost a year until he swiftboated the Clintons--just in time for the South Carolina primary...

Obama gets the same black support everywhere. The lowest he has ever gotten is 78% in South Carolina. The distinction is when whites vote on racial lines too by giving 67-75% support to Hillary. That happens in places like Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi. In South Carolina the combined Edwards/Hillary share of the white vote was 76%. Since there was only one black candidate he won.

28. He was getting overwhelming african american support before SC
african americans went to him right after he won Iowa because many I'm sure thought Hillary was inevitable. Like I've said, obviously african americans with knowledge of the jim crow era/slavery/lynching/dragging/etc are GOING TO VOTE FOR AN AFRICAN AMERICAN WHO HAS A CHANCE OF BECOMING THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. My black roommate fucking cried after he won Iowa because she knew it was an all white state and now saw him actually having a chance of winning. My friend who use to support Hillary is now supporting Obama, and this happened before SC. Yes, there is pride to african americans that another african american is electable, and it has nothing to do with the bullshit reasons you are giving, because most people who aren't political junkies are not paying attention to this kind of thing.

Most african americans agree with policies put out by democrats. are you really pretending to be this ignorant? african americans see an african american, who is a democrat, who is accepted by everyone, and, OMG! theyre overwhelmingly VOTING FOR HIM

and you're wrong, most african americans switched after iowa. the sudden shift in sc polling came way before SC, but after Iowa.

and im not saying we should vote for an african american for payback for crimes against he past, and you know what i am saying. i am saying that african americans who have full knowledge of the racism of this country, are going to vote for the first viable african american democratic candidate.

What policies does Obama offer that they don't? Your entire argument revolves around his skin color, which is very revealing. It took the swiftboating of the Clintons on race to achieve what Michelle Obama demanded in November of 2007. Post-swiftboating Obama had the field to himself.

35. Keep convincing yourself that the only reason Obama is winning the black vote is because
of "swiftboating" if that's what helps you sleep better at night. African americans are proud of another african american making it far enough to possibly be President, given the history of racism in this country against african americans. And it really is that simple.

This isn't American Idol. Who we nominate will affect the nation and world. He was losing, mainly because the Clintons have a great record on race. He couldn't win on the issues or his 1 year in the senate record so he went the ugly route and swiftboated the Clintons.

He gained a lot with african americans just as he has with whites, only greater with african americans for possibly somewhat different reasons. Do you not remember that Hillary Clinton was ahead in the polls by 20 or 30 points late last year? You're saying this all happened because of Obama's "swiftboating?" You are absolutely delusional. And if african americans want to vote for a person because of what he represents against racism, you are basically calling the african americans who voted for him stupid and idiotic people who are easily mislead. Is that your whole point?

43. He is doing lousy with Latinos and Asians and loses whites solidly
He is reliant on 85-90% black support. The problem for us as a party is the black share of general election voters is half of what it is in Democratic primaries. What will Obama do then if he is our nominee?

He apparently is sliding backwards with whites. He barely cracked the 30's in Ohio, is at 29% in PA, and got only 21% in MS. In Texas he regressed among Latinos as well. There weren't enough Asians in any recent state to compare him to past performance.

If you have two candidates who are identical on the issues and you have doubts as to whether one is racist against you it makes sense to vote for the one you are sure is not racist against you. This is what the swiftboating achieved. It raised doubts about the Clintons and gave Obama virtually the entire group by default.

52. You are so obviously selective in what you choose to believe.
He won whites in Wisconsin and was even with them in Virginia, Maryland, California, I could go on and on. He won in states like Utah, where actual polls showed him up 30%.

I swear, some people on DU are ridiculously slow-ish.

Momentum, tbh, does not mean that much in this race. You can look at the demographics of a state and know who will win. Everyone knew Hillary would win OH. She will win PA, because of demographics. And it won't matter, as Obama will win NC and IN. If he wins the white vote in IN, is he suddenly progressing with white voters? Your argument that he's regressing is ridiculous. It's all about the demographics of a state, and analyzing one states results with every other state is stupid, unless every state shows the same thing.

Also, are you now admitting that you think black supporters are stupid. Wonderful!

There is social disapproval for admitting this is true. The people who are the most racist and sexist probably say "no, this isn't important" then rule out candidates on these grounds.

hardly any would. blacks vote based on who looks out for them most. as someone who has worked in civil rights, obama is well qualified. its the same reason why blacks overwhelmingly vote dem, every time. when whites and blacks trade their histories of privilege and oppression, respectively, ill concede that theres a double standard. on the gender issue, hillary is hillary (not likable) - she wouldnt be considered an exemplary woman or man with all the desperate tactics shes employed.

46. Perhaps. Alabama is the only other place where that happened
Alabama is the only other state where Clinton did worse among people who said gender was a factor than she did overall.

In every other state, she has beaten the spread among people who said gender was a factor, with those votes going for her by as much as 84% in some states. On average, she has gotten a 5% boost in the total vote (I will readjust the number tomorrow to include MS) from people who say gender is a factor.

For Obama, the people who say race is a factor are a mixed bag. In the deep south and parts of the Northeast, he has done better among those who said race was a factor than the overall spread, but in some states, it has cost him as much as 4%. Overall, he has lost as many votes as he has gained from people who say race is a factor. And among those who say race was the most important factor, he usually does worse than the spread.
