7. Would I be a sexist or homophobe if I said this: |
|
"Hillary is not like a lot of powerful, tough women... at least her significant other is a man."
My statement is COMPLETELY ridiculous and would (rightly) get me slammed.... and it is NO DIFFERENT from yours.
Only YOURS has an added fact that makes it silly....
Obama is half-white. If he married a white woman, he would NOT be marrying "outside his race."

At least not in my opinion.
I'm not sure why you're asking, so I'm not going to make an assumption yet. But it feels like you're pushing a button, which is why I suspect you're getting some ugly responses. It feels like you're pushing a button, and I hope you understand that.

41. Well you really can't judge by the responses, though. |
|
Because they are knee-jerk responses because for many people you probably DID push a button. That's what people do when you push buttons, it's basic psychology. And I don't think that there is any fair point you can try to make if you use a tactic that tends to trigger people like that.

I'd have to see the statement in a larger context in order to judge the person as being racist or not.
There are plenty of statements that can be made about race that don't amount to the person being a racist.
I can state that smarter white men marry black women more often than ignorant white men.
And it's actually a fact. The more educated a white man is, the more likely he is to marry a black woman.
That's not racist.
I don't know whether it's true or not but if it IS, it wouldn't be racist to note that the more famous a black man is, the more likely he is to marry a white woman. Anyway, I don't know what's true or not about that last fact. But my point is would feel perfectly comfortable having a conversation discussing a topic like this and not feeling like I was being a racist. And if somebody said, "at least Obama married a black woman" I would have to understand the larger context before I could claim it was stated by a someone who had racism at the core of the statement.

Back in the inner city - a statement like this may have been made by any race person in our group and may or may not be considered insulting depending on the context. It is a stupid use of a stereotype no matter how you slice it though.

51. Of Course It Is, For Two Reasons: |
|
1: It implies that there's something wrong with marrying someone other than a black woman.
2: It speaks of being black not merely as a descriptive, but as a stereotyped group. It groups by race, and implies that the race spoken is supposed to adhere to certain rules and expectations that are different from everyone else, or they are to be looked down upon. For example, to turn the phrase around, it is implying that those who do not marry black women are falling out of some perceived order somehow, and are less of a person than him for doing so. In reality, any one can choose to marry anyone they friggin want. Because there were implied rules or an implied "he's better than them because" that's based solely on racial factors, the statement becomes one of racism.
