Poll question: Who here is using the Ignore feature on DU?
Edited on Tue Mar-11-08 10:38 PM by stop the bleeding
I hear a lot of "ignore" references here on DU reading through the threads. I personally never have used this feature, but I also think it is great feature for people that wish to use it. So I am curious how many people are using this tool.

edit: to add part of title that was cut off.

44. so do I.
Makes for a much more pleasant read. I don't mind reading reasoned debate or well-thought out arguments from Clinton supporters - or even kneejerk reactions, if they're free of derision, but if all they ever do is snark, mock, belittle, ridicule, condescend, I pull the trigger. Life is too short for that shit. Cowardice? No... my sanity takes precedence over the "courage" of getting into an ugly bloodletting fight with somebody who wants nothing but that... an ugly bloodletting fight. That solves nothing.

And I am free to not read what they say. No censorship involved.

That's like saying I have to listen to a telephone solicitor's entire spiel because saying I'm not interested and hanging up is censorship.

was when a poster was spamming the board with his products. I got tired of him.

Now I have a few over a dozen people on ignore. Three of them have been tombstoned.

I did not ignore anyone from either side unless they attacked me personally. I am surprised how much of that is happening.

I prefer to read my news and read from a wide range of sources and figure the truth is somewhere in between. So, can anyone here tell me, what the hell is a freeper?

But the Admins moved all the poo flinging in here so we don't embarrass ourselves in public. Usually, we're all just against Republicans and for furthering Democratic causes. It looks more like the General Discussion Forum.

Hope you stick around. And, some friendly advice: if you eat at The Olive Garden, keep it to yourself. :)

even when there is no primary, which can spark huge arguments. Some of them have turned into running jokes, and The Olive Garden is one of them.

Other subjects to avoid: smoking and breastfeeding. :)

Ignore is juvenile.
Wasn't there something in the constitution about free speech?

It makes you look like a radio talk show host that has a dump button. Oh, what a great communicator that has to hang up.

I'm past that.

34. Excellent comparison
The wimpiest and most pathetic radio talk show hosts are the ones who cut off a caller then ridicule him after pushing the button. Hank Goldberg made that an art form in Miami sports talk radio.

Similarly, the thing that busts me up is posters who brag about putting someone on ignore, then cowardly rip them in that post.

I've never put anyone on ignore. But lately I do avoid the senseless back and forth argumentative posting. I have too many things going on right now from a family standpoint, and prefer to make one lengthy post then go back to real life.

The broadcaster/poster is still free to blather on, but I'm also free to modify or shut out the noise by turning down the volume, changing the station, or shutting the radio off completely.

23. None of the above.
I have used all the various ignore features liberally -- from hiding individual threads, to ignoring only new threads by certain people, to ignoring anything certain people post at all. At various times, I've had had from 10 to as many as 100 people on at least partial ignore.

However, I clear the list completely on a regular basis and give everyone a fresh start. As a result, my list has been getting steadily shorter as more of the most obnoxious people have been tombstoned.

My list was cleared again this evening, when Mississippi was called for Obama. There's no doubt that I'll have a few people on at least partial ignore before the evening is over, but at the moment that list is empty.

I look forward to a time very soon when we will all be united in support of our nominee and can again turn our attention to defeating the GOP.

41. There are four levels of eliminating annoyance.
(1) In the lower left corner of every original post is an option to "Hide Thread" by clicking. That way, if it's an offensive or frivolous post to you, you can just eliminate it.

(2) To the right of the poster's name in every post are several little icons. The one with a red X on it indicates three levels of "ignore" for posters you dislike.
a) You can hide any new threads they start.
b) You can hide anything they say in any thread.
c) You can refuse private messages from them in your inbox.

:)

I just read the first few words of a post and can usually decide whether it's a post I want to read or not, and if not, I skip to the next one. There are a few posters whose names I recognize who I see as being quite juvenile, so I just skip to the next post.

57. Never used it. I wouldn't know how to even if I wanted to
have no idea what effect it has.

Mainly, I came to DU to learn and to discuss issues with others. And, yes, to debate and to disagree. "Ignoring" unpleasant and unpopular opinions is a sure way for the flat earth society. If one is not aware of opposing opinions, how is that person an informed voter and a citizen?

I did not use another feature that the administrators tried last year and than removed.

On the other hand, I do not read every single post, especially in a thread that meanders into "did," "did not."

I often would just read the OP and perhaps a few replies and that would be it.

Oh, and I support Clinton.
